needs more "in between" action.

the game is great once you get to the giants. but there is nothing in between the palace and the giants. that let me down a bit.
but other than that small point i would have to say the game is great fun! i like it a lot, as long as the horse goes where i tell it to...

Best game I played in a LONG time

This has got to be one of the best games I have ever played.

What makes this game so wonderful is not in how it is played, but in how it follows the script. The huge world of the Colossus will overwhelm the imagination with wonder, as you gallop your way on horseback to multiple destinations in hunt for each gigantean monster: Up and down scaling mountainsides; across expanse fields; in between dark valleys; cutting through dense forest; bustling through immense deserts. And as you slowly come to know this mysterious, mystical, but somehow ominous world, you will encounter remnants of previous human dwellings, such as the ruins of ancient temples carved out of the bellies of mountains, particles of arched bridges perched above the surface of calm, lifeless waters, shrines, sacrificial altars on cliff sides, mysterious pillars laid out upon grassy hills. The land is so dismal and dreary in its lack of inhabitants and unattended buildings that it is a pictorial definition of what it is to be Godforsaken and Desolate. You cannot help but feel you are in a world that rejects your presence and condemns interaction with humanity in it's entirety. All you hear throughout your journey in this vast region is the hooves of your horse hitting the gravel as it runs and the wind whistling through the canyons. We are talking about a game hammering the highest degree of style. I mean, my God, what an experience.

Aside from the mysterious and haunting locales within this vast landscape, there is the Colossi themselves to top off the brilliance of this inspiring game. There is nothing quite like the feeling of finding one. All are well hidden. They lay silent and dormant within the deepest parts of the rocky canyons. Some hide within the ruins of cities forgotten by time. Some within the earth. And some, beneath your feet, in water or in ground. No matter where they hide or how frustratingly long it takes you to find one, you will be awestruck with your encounters with them. They are huge, like walking mountains. The first time you encounter one you will always find some difficulty in defeating it. They are challenging in such a way that you will be forced to approach each Colossi with a different method of conquering it. The threat of death is not really an issue here, since most of their attacks are easily avoided. Jumping and climbing is key to winning most of the battles. You often must use the environment around you to distract them or expose their vulnerabilities. A great mix of puzzle solving and action, I thought. Although I wish the Colossi had more theme songs, the songs they DO have are performed brilliantly and I have yet to grow tired of them. They coincide with the epic battles perfectly.

Story-wise, this game seems simple at first, until you match it to what happens at the rather long ending (stay tuned even after the credits). It will put you in a position, as another reviewer had previously stated, where you don't know what is good or bad. I will not spoil it for you, but I understand now why some people have admitted to coming close to crying and why forums on the internet have been made to discuss the true nature of our hero, the girl and the Colossi themselves. Evidently, I am not the only one who sympathized for the poor beasts.

My biggest, and probably only complaint I have with this game is its stack of unanswered questions. Yes, the mystique may play a vital role in the quality of your gaming experience, but the curiosity is just too much. I would have liked at least a quick draft of the land's history and why so many of these buildings lay scattered in ruins and empty. I now understand the Colossi and what they are and why they attempt to kill (I had to study the game's ending to obtain this answer; typical Japanese story-telling is almost always inconclusive and leaves an array of possibilities for the viewer to consider). Maybe the game could have been better if the land had included other forms of intelligent life such as other lonesome travelers, or maybe a reclusive tribe, or perhaps an alien race. Could have worked if done right, I think.

But overall, this is almost a perfect game. I played through it three times since I got it a week ago. I am not recommending this game, I am telling you that you need to buy it now. That way, if it gets popular enough, they can make a sequel.

PS: By the way, the game ICO seems to hold a lot of relevance to this game, acting as a form of sequel. I myself have not played it, or even knew about it until I read what people were saying about this one. I ordered ICO from an Amazon merchant and it should be arriving shortly! Very excited about this newly discovered, yet not so new series!!!!!!!!

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES FOR THE PS2

This game has stunning graphics and fast-paced gameplay. This game is simply killing different bosses over and over again, but dont think im trying to make this game sound bad because that kind of battles in a game like that make this game how awesome it is. For example every colossus is different looking and has different ways to kill each of them. Some a lot more complicating than others. And theres os many colossus' that it takes a long time to beat them all. So overall this game is great.

Stunning visually but...

I was very impressed but the graphics for this game. It was very much like watching a movie in most places and I agree with several of the other reviewers that there are no other games like it on the market. Sadly, that is the end of my positive statements on this game. Parts of it (particularly the traveling parts) are quite boring and tediously repetitious, not to mention that the horse is difficult to control. In fact, many times, it was just easier to run to where I was going rather than fight with the horse. However, once you find a Colossus the gameplay becomes extremely difficult. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a challenge but this game is repetitious and far too difficult to be truly entertaining. Sad to say I feel like I wasted my money.

One of the few pieces of gaming art ever made

First off, most people probably won't like this game initially. People who play video games have gotten so inundated with FPS sloggers, RPG's where you have to fight 80 hojillion battles to make level 2, and trite storyline after trite storyline, that when your missing any of those elements, people for some reason think their missing a crucial aspect of the game.

Thankfully, that period of ignorance should be blessedly short for most. The gorgeous, flowing world that changes almost seamlessly from desert to plain to forest will take the breath of even the hardest critic of VG graphics. The soft background music adds a nice touch as you gallop on horseback from one exotic locale to the next.

Then there are the opponents themselves, which are awe-inspiring to say the least. While their defeat is has been described as formulaic (stab them in their weak point) how else would one fight a walking mountain? The colossi are each unique, with different movements and even personalities, which you can start to sense as you play. Some of the battles can be rather frustrating, but all of the paths forward are intuitive and can be figure out.

The story is also beautiful. While it is a take on the normal "save your loved one" premise, it is delivered and handled expertly and originally. You don't even start off with a certain goal in mind, as the best you can hope for is that saving Mono (whom you bring into the game to bring back to life) "may not be impossible."

Simply put, if you liked Ico, you'll love this game. If you come in looking for hack-n-slash, or a simple point and click story progression, you'll be sorely disappointed. This game is meant to be appreciated like a fine wine or a work of art, not ramroded through to kill several hours.

WHO WOULD OF THUNK IT!

How many games have you played that really grabs you and doenst let go?. Quite a few i assume. how many games have you played that traps you in its world and want to stay there for a very long time.
Shadow of the colossus is less a game and more of an experience. Right from the start you are taken straight into it's world. Meaning, the storyline is not present. you start off riding your horse carrying a girl into a temple. Immediately after you begin your quest. This game is full of unforgetable moments and emotions. For instence, when you face the first colossi...AMAZING!!. the beauty of the atmosphere from the detailed graphics to the well orchestrated score. This game has so much to offer to the player...yet,the concept of the game is so simple.
For the casual gamer who wants a hack n slash game...keep far away. Many people were dissapointed by the fact that there are no enemies roaming the vast lands. Only the 16(or 15...i cant remember)colossi that you must destroy in order to awaken the mysterious girl from her death bed.
I cant recommend this game enough even though i've only played for about 3 hours. It's an instant classic for the gamer with patience.
Overall, this game gets a perfect 5 in every category! Forget what the skeptics and wannabe "magazine reviewers" say. Take it from a gamer who plays just about all genres and knows when a sleeper hit is destined to awaken.

Greatest Adventure game!!

Shadow of the Colossus has been the best Adventure title Ive played since Tomb Raider I and II on the PS. The Development team that did ICO has really outdone themselves with this game. From the start the intro and cutscene really draw you into the game making you crave to see whats next. After calling upon your trusty horse you raise your raise to find out where the Colossi is then set path to conquer him. Each Colossi holds a new and unique challenge to conquer. After defeating a Colossi its back to the temple to aqcuire a new Colossi quest. This is truely just an amazing game and one that will be noted and appreciated for years to come. And one of the most brilliant parts about it is that its definitely a good clean game that children of any age or adults like me can conquer and love... Enjoy!!

How do you explain this game???...

You're merely a young knight with horse / bow and arrow / and sword. You are all alone in a land that is filled with incredible mountain ranges, endless feilds, dark caves, and ancient ruins. Very "dungeons and dragons" so to speak. Very cool..

The object of this adventure is to find and destroy all "Colossus". The "Colossus" are mammoth in size, and the journey one must take to find these "Colossus" is challenging, and thought provoking in the process. Not easy, but you can learn as you play....

It's so cool words can not really explain it. The feel, and graphics of this game are amazingly life-like. You'll feel like you're actually battling these creatures! Huffing and puffing, you'll be running for your life when the "Colossus" shows itself and comes searching for you!!!....

What an incredible game. I just bought it a couple days ago, and I can't stop playing it. This has to be one of the coolest games ever created. If you like adventure, you must own this today. Easily the best game I've played in years. You can't put a price on games that are this incredible....

Buy it with the upmost confidence. You'll love this!!

One of my favorites

I really love this game. For all the people who say it has no storyline, most of it is at the end! Anyway, this game is great and definitely worth your money. It has some of the best graphics on the PS2 and has a great soundtrack (I listen to it quite often). The gameplay is simple but its fun to just look at the scenery in this game and raise your attributes. When your not fighting colossi you can eat fruit and lizards to raise your health and grip/strength meters. I really enjoyed this game and am happy that I bought it.

This game is a MUST have.

Every time I went to the store I've always ignored this game thinking it's just another one of those boring looking game based on the picture and description. Well one day it went on sale for $14.95 and I thought well it's really cheap plus I need a new game anyway so instead of buying a DVD movie I got this game. At first I thought the graphics were a little funky well let's just say it's not as great as the Onimusha graphics. But as soon as I started playing it I GOT HOOKED !!! And it even made it better when I killed my first Colossus. Then I killed my second and then my third and then I realized that I can't stop now I just can't put the controller down. Until I got stomped by the the seventh colossus a sea serpent and to be honest it took me a while to master this colossus as I was so afraid of the deep water. The thought of a beast lurking under water terrifies the hell out of me I had to tell my self it's just a game get over it and kill that sucker. Nope that didn't work until finally I put the controller down and turn the game off. I got back at it the next day and finally mastered the beast.

This is a great game it's addicting, the concept is simple but the task itself is difficult and tedious. This is the game where patience and persistence can come in handy. I advice for anyone to get this game don't make the same mistake I did, I just kept passing it from the shelves but it kept calling on to me and finally the Colossus captured me and I'm glad it did. It's a 15 bucks well spent it paid more than its worth already.
