great expansion

Great expansion for Civ 4. The scenarios are cool and so is the additional content for the regular game.

Sid Meiers does it again.

Excellent game. Super content. It had everything that I expected in it. Completely lived up to our expectations of a Sid Meiers Civilization game.

A lot of fun

I bought Civ 4 about a year ago and was never able to play the game for long before it would crash. Whenever I would expose about 15-20 cities on the world map, the game would automatically Exit to Desktop. Meaning, it ended the game without saving. The game patch and the update for the Nvidia 8600 m driver didn't help at all. Now a year later, I've gotten this expansion pack (because it says Windows Vista compatible and I just got a computer with Vista) and it finally works. Graphics are definately improved, if you zoom in on your units, you can hear them working and occasionally talking. A lot of new elements were added to the game as well. Definately alot of fun. Another reviewer stated the AI cheats. It sometimes does. In one game I set up only three other civilizations besides mine. I was just about to create my 3rd city. I had no workers, no roads, and all I had were Warriors in each city and as I had just started the game, my civ was in the stone-age. I kept seeing these pop-ups about how well the other civs were doing so I went into the World editor to see. The computer was cheating like crazy! Its other Civs already had about 8 cities each, all connected with roads, each other civ had about 20 workers and they had marines and one was working on the internet, and this was in the Stone-age! So I redid the game and in the next one, the AI did not cheat. I think it could be a glitch or maybe it everyonce in awhile cheats. Don't know, but you can tell because it'll give you updates on how well the other Civs are doing. All in all, a great game.

Great add-on for Civ IV

This expansion pack is definitely a great option to spice up Civ IV. The updated options (added civs, warlords, random historical events) and improved graphics heighten the game-play experience. The scenarios are also very good - although the 3 or 4 Road-to-War scenarios are a little complicated, at least logistically.

Great Graphics But Wheres The Beef

All in all, Civ IV is very very fun and, as with all others in the series, extremely addictive. The graphics are top drawer stuff. I love the Nuclear Explosions from ICBM's. I was rolling in a Gladiating Dictator sort of way. Imagining all the bits and pieces of my mortal subjects scattering in the extreme radioactive power surge, screeming in agony from the intense heat of radiation and ...sorry. If I have one bad thing to say, (and it is a very big downside to this game), it is the lack of the scenarion editor that spoiled us in CIV III. A confusing World Editor is there but its limits are extensive and frustrating. There is little to no guidance as to what can and cannot be done. On a positive note, if you want to have Oil, Coal, Uranium and/or Gold, and you want it now, simply save your game, open the World Editor, add the bonuses to your current map. Once saved, exit back into the game and whalaa, there they are ready for use. Unlike CIV III, when scenarion changes were made, (It's weak too on guidance),you'd have to start all over again and again and again until you had your custom scenario just right. Now changes can be done on the fly which is very good, ONLY theres not near the depth of modifications that made CIV III (IMO) much better than this edition. For graphics, fun, and addictibility, I give CIV IV 2 thumbs up, For the depth it lacks in customization as compared to CIV III, 1 thumb down. I recommend the purchase unless the scenario editor is a big deal to you then I wouldn't buy this cause it essentially doesn't have one.

More fun than Scooter Libby in drag

Declaring war without the interference of Congress has never been so much fun. In fact it is some engrossing that I thought I was playing a game only to find out I was sitting at a LSTAT terminal directing real troops movements (I made up some hubbub about WMD's and such to cover the invasion, war weariness really is a huge hassle).

Despite that the inclusion of events and espionage really make the late game more interesting. The new civs and leaders are well done and add even mroe depth to the game. And if somehow you do get a little bored of the main game there are a dizen scenarios that cover everything from historical events, to flying spaceships and fighting dragons.

Didn't work

The game didn't work. Tbe second disk was bad. Contacted the company and they wanted me to send it back within a designated time. I couldn't do that. I live to far from town to justify the trip just for a game.

Great fun, but not a milestone

Like the others before, this new version is lots of fun, but not a milestone, nothing radically new. It also really slows down in the latter parts of the game. I wait forever for a turn. Maybe it is my PC, but this has always been a problem with this series. But don't get me wrong, it is fun and addicting.

Best Pack yet!

I've been a fan of the Civ games since Civ I back in the old MS-Dos days, and I have to say that Sid Meiers has outdone himself with this new pack for Civ IV! One of the mods is based is space and it reminds me alot of the Galatic Civs game. Overall this is a must have for any Civ fan!

A good upgrade

Beyond the Sword is a nice expansion pack for the Civ IV game. There are the usual new leader and units provided as you would expect in a Civ upgrade, but there are many more enhancements. Spying is completely revamped and there are now Corporations to be built, which are similar in nature to religions in gameplay. Through corporate expansion, you can give a city a needed boost, at the expense of gold. Each country now gets a unique building enhancement in addition to a unique unit. The AI of the computer is a lot smarter than in the original game too, so watch out.
