This is awful...

My husband and I have spent so many hours playing this game it isn't funny. We can not even get past what we are terming the second level. We haven't even made it out of Bag End to go on the Quest! The graphics are nice and after you get use to switching camera angles it is easy to use. But we are also having problems with the system requirements - which we DO have as our computer is only a year old - but when we try to use the Ring it throws us out of the whole game! Stay away buyers!

OH God....

This game is.... Aweful. It's like Tomb Raider mixed with Pong. It's buggy. The game itself is terrible. Don't waste your time.

Can't seem to start it

This was a gift and I finally got around to installing it. Or I should say tried. I tried to run it on a laptop and 3 computers but the game will not start. Just a black screen.

The one thing to be aware of is the fact that your monitor card has to be texture and lighting compliant. My nvidia quardo fx 1400 from some reason will not work.

Also, note that Black Isle is dead and Vivendi has a not that they will no longer support this game.

Do not buy it.

If I ever get it running I will come back and change this review.

OK

The begining of the game is so dumb ,I've made games funner then walking through the shire with "THE 3D GAMEMAKER".im stock in the shire trying to escape the Nazgul, the game would be alot more fun if it even worked on any computer[i had to borrow a computer from my dad's job] or if you could pick which character you wanted to be! I bought this game thinking it would be all action and fighting ORCS, but instead it's NOT! Though im sure it will become funner once I leave the shire. Please write back and tell me how to get past the DARK RIDERS and how to become ARAGORN or GANDALF so that I can fight ORCS,etc.

Adventure Genre or Action Genre...it's all about CONTROLS

I only just received this game via UPS a few days ago and already I am highly disillusioned and highly tempted to put the game away or sell it to an 'action genre' (which is what this game really seems to be more of) fan and rue the loss of what might have been a truly fantastic game. I have been a Tolkein fan since 1967 (long, long ago) and when I read the hype on this game and how it stuck to the books by Tolkein (upon which I wrote my college English lit thesis) I decided that this was an adventure game that I really wanted to have. At the beginning of the game we find Frodo running 'helter skelter' all over the Shire doing mundane... tasks NOT found in the books. Finally, we finish with that and head to Bywater, very short and sweet and wonder what that was all about. We head back to Baggend to retrieve the Ring and to hand over the key to Mr. Gamgee which is the beginning of the action genre. From that point on, I found that I, as Frodo, was totally unable to get out of the Gamgees front yard before I was 'killed' by a Black Rider (after the 7th death, I called it quits and headed here).
Secondly, we have far too many keyboard, mouse and mouse+keyboard controls and are not given any where near the time to learn all of the controls before the attacks begin and we find ourselves in need of controls that up until now haven't even been used in the game. Unless you are really an action fan and don't mind lots of controls and have an excellent memory and extremely dexterous fingers, I would say: leave this one on the shelf!

Good Game, that fellowship of the ring!

I must say thatI really enjoyed this game! This has a story that sticks to the original plot very well, and, at times, even better than the movies! I am quite glad for the inclusion of Tom Bombadil, and Old Man Willow. This is a good game to get, and, if you're into The Lord of the Rings, I highly recommend it!

Oh my gosh! This game is the best that ive ever played. I am an unbielievable tolkien fan, and listen to me. If you are any tolkien fan you WILL love this game. First of all, all those other people complaining about their computers not working with the game aren't seeing the picture. YOUR COMPUTER DOESN'T MEET THE REQIREMENTS. For those who have a good com, and love a good story, action, and adventure, this game is most definately for you. There isn't one thing i dont like about it. The action is unbielievable, with dark riders, scores of orcs and uruk-hai, barrow down dead, the balrog, trolls, and wolves. I got stuck once and it seemed like the game ... up. But thats just because you have to JUMP out of the place that your stuck in, or move. You get to be Aragorn, which is what I like most about the game. And Gandalf and Frodo. you can use weapons like Sting, Glamdring,a Westernesse sword, sticks, rocks, and cool magic.
A great Game for a true Tolkien and action-loving fan.
It's destined to be a classic. It's definatly my favorite, for its hard puzzles, superb gameplay, beautiful landscapes and nonstop hoardes of action. I loved it!!!!

lame in every sense of the word

First, this game is ridiculously short. I've played demos for longer than it took me to finish this game. In addition to being short it has no replayability value because the action is entirely linear. The "labyrinth" of Moria is laughable, since there is basically only one way you can go 90% of the time! Outdoor levels have steep hills and trees everywhere so you are pretty much forced to follow obvious paths through much of the game. Fighting enemies involves clicking the mouse button while standing in front of them (moving around increases your effectiveness, but is not really necessary). The AI is practically prehistoric. There are a few puzzles in the game, but they are not imaginative enough to spark much interest. Anyone over the age of 5 should be able to figure them out in short order, especially with the on screen hints that pop up. The dialogue written for the cutscenes is horrible, and generally poorly delivered. The graphics are generally adequete, but they are ruined by a poor execution of the third-person view which goes completely wacky in any type of close quarters. Half of the fighting in Moria involves just blindly clicking the mouse button while the graphics on the screen go haywire. (of course, blindly clicking still dispatches of all the bad guys). Adding the the problem is the characters are incapable of looking up or down beyond a fairly limited angle. In other words, you can't look very far up at the sky or down into a valley. This is immensely frustrating on the mountainous levels and particularly on a certain level that involves fighting a flying beast.

Even if you are a fan of the books or movies, don't waste your money on this pathetic excuse for a game.

Camera angles ruin this game!

I tried the Demo version and loved it, so I bought the game. I've been playing all day on it and the same thing keeps popping up. The same flawe. Many times when Froto or another character is in battle, you can't see your opponent because the mouse control is so sloppy. It's downright annoying! I'm currently frustrated doing battle as Stridor against 5-6 black riders. He's considerably outnumbered, trying to protect the injured Froto alone. For some reason, his sword disappeared and all he has to defend Froto is a torch from the campfire while the riders all have long swords! If that wasn't so bad, the mouse controls are so unbelievably slow when you try to back him up or dodge the swath of a rider's sword. And he's attacked from front and behind, yet you can't turn him around to react in time! Also, there are NO clues in the game. Many times you can run all over for hours trying to accomplish this goal or that and only stumble onto it. Had this game had better controls, I would've given it 5 stars because it IS very entertaining and the graphics are excellent. Still, I'd recommend you buy it and try it for yourself....

Close to a hit-but wrong game

Vivendi Universal seemed to do everything right with this game. Graphics-great. Sound-great. Zoom and controls-great. It seems to be an instant classic, Sso you might be wondering why i gave this game 2 stars. If they only made this exact game-but with a different story line. I have read The Lord of Rings trilogy, and it is extremly complex. Great Book, Great movie, but almost impossable to make a game out of it-if not impossable. The storyline is way to complex. You cannot roam around and do what ever you want like in a Grand Theft Auto game, for that would change the future of the storyline, and with a storyline as complex as lord of the rings, that will change everything. Basically, gandlalf or anyone else will tell you what to do, you do it, then this happens again. In a game like Medieval total war, or GTA you deside your fate. This game you dont. You either do what you are supposed to do, or you die and try doing it over. There is no sence of stratagy or thinking, whatever you do, you dont ecide what you do next, the game does. Maybe a differant storyline would change it-like the world of middle earth, except you control the armies of gondor or whatever to fight the evil lord. Get a game that you have more control over, i sugest medieval total war, or perhaps wait a bit for Rome: total war coming out soon.
