Leisure Suit Larry- The Next Generation

In the early to late 90's there was a computer game series that took raunchy fun in a game to levels that could virtually never be imagined (of course before the ESRB ratings system was initiated)and raised the ire of stuffed shirts all around the country. That series was Leisure Suit Larry, where you played as a lounge lizard on a quest to get laid.
Now nearly a decade later and the original creators of the LSL series, Sierra, are following in the footsteps of several game companies reinventing classic characters for a new generation of gamers by releasing LSL: Magna Cum Laude (by the way, for those curious the phrase means "with full honors".
In this new game you take on the role of Larry Lovage, the nephew of the original Leisure Suit Larry, Larry Laffer. Larry has been in college for seven years (which ironically is how long it has been since the last original game was released) and still continues to follow in his uncle's footsteps by trying his best to get laid. He learns that a popular dating show is on his college campus and he goes on a series of quest to try to bed down the ladies he meets throughout the game by playing through a series of mini-games.
The games involve either a)Using a sperm to guide Larry through a conversation, b)Dancing or trampoline jumping by matching the directions on your controller, c)Playing quarters, d)tossing out fliers, e)playing a drink mixing/spanking/makeover game by hitting an assigned button within seconds, and more. Also by drinking in the game you will get smashed but don't worry...if you need to sober up for any reason you do have the choice of finding a nice little spot to relieve yourself (funny how a certain song from the first season of Chappelle's Show kept popping into my head...tee hee).
Success in games can earn you confidence and/or money, but running a Perfect in any game will also earn you Secret Tokens, which can be used to buy special features like special load screens, strip versions of games, nude models of the girls in the game (yes there is nudity in the game...YES!!!), and more.
The humor is somewhat raunchy and downright hilarious, including one game that will definitely make you laugh out loud the next time you watch "Grease". And the girls (both virtual and their real-life counterparts, shown through the loading screens, range from alright to seriously sexy)are fun to pass through their missions (Harriet makes Michelle from the American Pie movies look like a rank amateur and Ione alone will have you howling with how it ends).
The games do get a little repetitious, especially if you lose repeatedly (and it will happen as you progress further in the game as they get much harder), but the dialogue is funny to hear as you replay a mission again for fun or to recover from a loss. But if you like a video game that allows you to get a little T&A, sex and more girls than your average slumber party, get reasy to try to graduate Magna Cum Laude (note the double-entendre) with Leisure Suit Larry.
Gets boring 10% into the game

The charm of the previous LSL games is completely gone. The "humor" is extremely lame, forget about the witty humor in the previous series.
Plus the way you advance is by playing minigames. This wouldn't be all that bad ( well it's nothing like the original where you are directly making decisions affecting the story) but you have to play the same mini games over and over and over again. And these are stupid games that can be programmed on a TI-83 calculator.
Biggest waste of money on a video game....
This isn't my LSL.. this is a cheap knockoff.
I'm 24 yrs old.

Bought the game and played it through. Just because I paid for it I guess. Very disappointing though. Those worthless mini games. After a few I just wimped out, had enough tokens to just bypass those. They were annoying. Couldn't keep up with them anyway and weren't that much fun. Well, maybe the one where you have to pass out the flyers. The dance one, man give me a break. Try and drink a few beers yourself and do that. You have to be really sober to do all those mini games. Just wimp out it's easier. I was glad when I finished the game. I'm not sure about the ending though. I guess it ended and I went on Spring Break. Is that right? Not sure. Anyway, I loved the old Larry games but this was another attempt in search of more money on old fame. Shame though. And what's with this mature rating, hell everything is censored. Give me a break. I'm going to give it to my son to play and he will probably "laugh" at me for giving it too him. Oh well, I guess this is probably the end of the "Leisure Suit Larry" games. Kind of liked them though.

The uncut uncensored version is 10 times better than this one. Having them curse and swear and showing CGI boobies, need to go with the uncut version for the total LSL experience... uncut version is by far 5 stars!!
Love this game!

I was a big fan of the old Al Lowe games, so I was a bit hesitant when I went to but my copy and was told Al Lowe wasn't involved. However, after just a couple of hours of playing I can tell you that this game is without a doubt the funniest game I've played in a long, long time. Also, if you are not a hardcore gamer you'll should have fun with the minigames, even though they do get a bit repetitive. This game was well worth the $30, some of the stuff that Larry says had me busting a gut. Great game to wind down with after a bad day at work.

I've enjoyed the quirky humor of previous Larry games, and I've followed them long enough that I've become nostalgic. So I was oddly happy to know that another Larry was coming along. This is a different Larry, because this is the first Larry that isn't a creation of Al Lowe. (Check out his web site at AlLowe.com). The absence of Lowe adds a political element to some of the commentary: Some people are of a mindset to dislike this game because they wanted Lowe to be a part of it. I think Lowe's participation would have been nice, but I'm willing to let the game speak for itself.
Bottom line is it satisfies me. It has the elements I've enjoyed in the earlier games and in life itself: The search for elusive satisfaction in a kooky world. It's raunchier than its predecessors but, like its predecessors, it's not a source of true erotic gratification. The game play consists of traipsing through the University and its surrounding community, bringing together the bits and pieces that move towards the greater goal of being a contestant on a dating show. Each element involves a short series of mini-games. There are 5 or 6 different types of mini-games, and they are repackaged for each encounter (for example, in the "service four lines" mini-game scenario, at one point you'll be passing out beer bottles to four lines of people in a bar, and later passing out fliers to four lines of people on the campus quad), and the repetition can become tedious. But if you persist, you'll either get better at these games, or alternatively you can spend "secret tokens" to "win" the current mini-game and move along. Meanwhile, there are many amusing details of the terrain to be explored and exploited.
There's an alternate version of this game, the "uncut and uncensored" package, that costs a few dollars more. I haven't seen it, and I've got mixed feelings about whether it's a good idea. On one hand, I'm curious; on the other hand, I don't expect gratification from a video game, so subtlety might be more effective. Sometimes less is more. And the standard game does grant you the ability to "buy" selective increases in the level of exposure by paying "secret tokens" to some of the shady characters who are found around the campus.
I'm glad Larry made it to the new millennium. If he shows up again, I'll buy that too.
Presumably it's not necessary to mention that Larry is for mature audiences only. Of course, if you were mature, you wouldn't be playing, would you?
A Game of Mini-Games

The old Leisure Suit Larry games were inventive, testing what society would accept in terms of a game. The sex-oriented humor was the main staple of course, coupled with an adventure styled game. Magna Cum Laude has none of the adventuring, and the humor is far less subtle or inventive. The game is made up of several mini-games, and while they are mildly entertaining for about 15 minutes, they do not a Leisure Suit Larry game make. Sierra should be ashamed of itself. On top of that, now they want to release an "uncut and uncensored" version. Who are they kidding? Most of the options are in plain text files.

Yes...the babes are hot...but the game is not.
The graphics are supurb...but the adventure is not.
Lots of repetition. Playing "Quarters", mixing drinks, dancing, & trampoline contests get dull after awhile.
Mindless conversations with the babes that are sometimes too hard to win.
Could have been better.
Where's Al Lowe when we need him?

What a travesty! And it's a good thing for Al Lowe (the man behind the original LLL series) that he had nothing to do with this pathetic loser of a game. Leisure Suit Larry was meant to be an old fashion "adventure" (roll playing) game, the fun was in the interactions, the discovery of the use of various items you found, not to mention the humor of the game. Okay, we have the humor (kind of)..but we have just about nothing else. Shame on everyone for this rip off of a classic.
Very bad.

Sierra brought us many wonderful titles over the years, including the Kings Quest, Hero's Quest, Police Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry serials. In most cases, they did a good job putting together creative, cute, situation driven puzzle games. Here, they delivered an appalling blend of poor graphics, bad language, and simplistic game play.
Gone are interaction with characters, puzzles, and good writing. Instead, one plays simple 2-D mini-games and views poorly developed cut-scenes.
The game is a bizarre blend of exceptionally childish "humor," such as fart jokes and random acts of not-very-clever profanity, coupled with 4 or 5 mini-games so shoddy and simplistic they recall the days of CGA. Too simple for those over 10, too profane for those under 16, this game would not be worth playing if it were free. At $50, Sierra sells their reputation and little else. I will think twice, and read some reviews, before purchasing another Sierra product.
