WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!!

I was actually pissed i spent money on this. the movie was good (even though i hate tom cruise) but this game was just crap. This was like a wanna be metal gear. honestly the very first level shows how much this game is lacking. the weapons were crappy and the whole game just overall supplied nothing. Wasnt original wasnt fun, and sadly the graphics were junk! sorry kids this game's no good.

If you are looking for a fun rent this game delivers. The length, array of weapons and replay value keep this game from being a good buy. YOu can get the most out of this game in one rent, but buying it will likely leave you dissapointed.

With the success of last year's game Splinter Cell, it's only natural that many games bearing a striking resemblance would emerge. Atari (formerally Infogrames) gives us it's latest effort from the Mission Impossible series called "Operation Surma". Though while being almost an unapolagetic clone of games like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, if you probe just enough under the surface, there's enough to keep you interested for a while.

The game's hero is the protagonist from the MI movies; Ethan Hunt. However, due to copyright and legal issues, he looks and sounds nothing like Tom Cruise. Those of you familiar with the series Cowboy Bebop will recoginze the voice of Steven Blum giving our hero his familiar Spike Speigel'esque sounding delivery. The action centers on Hunt, this time around he's taken a stealthy turn. The fictional nation of Yugaria is developing bio weapons with the help of a corporation named Surma Inc. Hunt's job is to get in there, figure out what's going on and to stop it if possible.

The gameplay is VERY similar to games like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid. Almost to the point where alot of the controls are identical. If you've played Splinter Cell you can practically jump right in and play MI: Operation Surma. There are alot of MI gadgets that are pretty neat though. The WASP cam (a flying camera), the micro cord, sound imaging goggles. A few gadgets probably would make 007 a little envious. One cool gadget is the Remote Camera Viewer, which allows you to tap into security cameras to recon an area. All of them are relatively easy to use. But make no bones about it, this is a stealth game. Though not as stealthy as Splinter Cell or MGS, going unseen is more advantagous. The enemy A.I. is a little subpar at times. Enemys will stand out in the open almost as if saying "Please shoot me", which makes your job a bit easier.

The graphics for this game are some what of a letdown. Though while they are nice, this game almost trys to be too ambitous than the graphics will allow. Frequently there is considerable slowdown. Almost to the point where the framerate looks like it's in slowmotion. There are some light and shadow tricks done but it's not a huge graphical innovation. It's similar to the shadow tricks currently employed in the game Manhunt. Ethan's moves are also, at times fluid and at others strenuous. I'm not sure but it doesn't look like motion capture was used. If it had been then possibley Ethan would move a little more effortlessly. There are times where he's almost skating arcoss the gamescape. One thing that is nice about the graphics are the environments. Though some are pretty generic looking others are very well laid out. There is quite a bit of open areas in the game. The added expanses make stealth a little more challenging at times. The camera also can be a little tricky but a quick tap of the R3 button will recenter it.

The sound in the game is pretty good. There's crashing glass, conversations between NPC's. Ving Rhames returns as the voice of Luther, Hunt's intel and support team member. Though there's no way to communicate directley with Luther he will chime in on a "need to know" basis.

This game may seem like a blatant Splinter Cell rip off, and to tell you the honest truth......yeah it sort of is. But if you dig deep enough under the surface, there's surprisingly enough to keep your interest to want to play through the entire game. And with Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow delayed for the Playstation 2 till July, this game will give you enough of a stealth fix to hold you over. The best advice I can tell you is to give this a rental first. That and don't pay full price.

Not to many reviews written on this game so I'de thought to share my views on this game for whomever is deciding to buy it or not. Operation Surma is a fairly good game. It has a LOT of elements from Splinter Cell, you just have a lot more gadgets to play with. Sometimes a little too much which will confuse you on what to use and when.

Good thing:

-The Grapics
-Sound
-The Gadgets
-Controls (except for the camera control which is in reverse)
-Many missions

Bad things:
-Splinter Cell rip off
-EASY!!!!
-Stealth mode is not very effective and interesting!

General advise - Rent first

I don't know where to start with this game. I got it as a Bday gift and I was very anxious to play it. This game tries real hard to be as good as Splinter Cell or MGS2, but it falls way short. In my opinion, the graphics were not that great, but it was playable. The controls weren't the best either, and they took some getting use to. Although, there is alot of great gadgets to use( some of them featured in the movie), and the story line rocks. The big dissapointment came from the simplicity of the game on easy mode. The guards shoot you from point blank range, but fail to drop you every time. The only way to die, is to stay there and keep getting hit by their bullets. On the other hand, some of the missions are very frustrating. You get no help but an objective, and that leaves you to figure out the mission basically by yourself. In a nut shell, the developers had a great idea, but they failed to compete with real stealth games like Splinter Cell. I don't think it's worth the fifty bucks, but I do think that it's a title to have. For those of you thinking of buying this game,.. buy it used here, or on Ebay.

MI:Operation Surma kind of sucks. I mean replay value for this game switches between high to nothing and controls (gun handling in particular) are very hard to get used to. This is a Splinter Cell rip-off and I reccommend that you don't buy this unless you're a hardcore video game nerd or a freak for video games. The only game this game beats is Family Guy the Game. Graphics however for this game I'll admit are pretty decent, or fine VERY GOOD as well as the AI, but I have to recommend that you stay away from this game.

i bought this game and foolishly expected splinter cell. dont get me wrong, its fun,but it has a huge lack of moves and activities. pretty much all you get is a 3 hit combo, and a tranq gun. the only good move is the corner kill, but you cant use it a lot.id say, its worth a test run for no more than $20.

Loved this game! It combines the movie elements with some elements of play that are similar to Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and even a little Metal Gear. The missions are varied and for gamers like me who aren't strictly pick up and play type players it's easy enough to get a handle of and soon take off running.
The graphics are great and they have a lot of the actors doing their own characters, short of Tom Cruise but I actually liked the guy doing the voice of Ethan just fine. Lots of weapons and different types of missions.
I also enjoyed the fact that there are so many different things to change the game, stealth, shooter, and puzzle/objectives.
I rented the game first and then actually bought a copy that I have played more than once.

The only problem I really had was two parts of the mission where you need to follow a plane and catch a parachute.

Look forward to a sequel.

This is the game to beat splinter cell. MI has hours of fun with tons of gadgets. The game is not based on any of the films although it has a clssic scene from Mission Impossible 1. This is a stealth action game with many remembered scenes from the movie. The only bad thing is Tom Cruise wasn't willing to lend his voice in the game so Ethan will be a little unreconisible. Apart from that this game will satisfiy all gamers

Mission Impossible was a great TV series, a great movie, and now it has turned into a great game. It's a combination of stealth, puzzles and shooting.

This is definitely a game you can replay many times. The easy mode is REALLY easy and is set up more as a training tool for those who aren't familiar with this type of game. On the other hand, the harder modes can get REALLY nasty and it will take you several times to get through those.

The movements of the character climbing over boxes and sliding along walls are all extremely well done. The graphics in general are quite nice - maybe not up to Splinter Cell quality, but they do draw you in. The plot is great too - it is a plausible situation and you do start to feel connected with the various characters. You care about what happens to them.

The game isn't simple. This isn't a doom-like shooter where you plow straight forward. You actually have to think about the situation you're in, figure out what the best method would be for getting to your objective and then working on it. Don't expect giant glowing arrows in this telling you DO THIS NEXT! I really enjoyed the challenge.

Highly recommended for fans of the Splinter Cell genre, as a way to test both their reflexes and their brainpower!
