Lots of fun!

This game is better than expected. You can easily cruise through the game just hacking and slashing enemies, but the challenge is to get all the rewards and hidden treasures. Bosses are huge. As with many games you empty their energy bar and it fills back again, but with different kind of attacks. It is a combination of action, adventure and platformer, but basically is the first one. Collecting money enables you to buy armor, health, techniques or underwear for increasing armor protection or finding treasures. If you are a hardcore gamer and have time to spare, you can play it in Hard mode too. I have had lot of fun. I didn't give it 5 stars because it doesn't have a deep story, but you can live with that because the levels are short but challenging, and you don't have to start each level from the beginning since it has checkpoints located through out the levels. You can also save when ever you need to, don't have to get to saving points.

A very ignored and underrated Ps2 game

Maximo Vs The Army of Zin is a great action packed Platformer by the great minds of Capcom. This game is very underrated and sadly it is ignored by many PS2 fans and owners(just look at the amount of reviews this game has on here). This is infact the sequal to Maximo: Ghost to Glory. Now the question is that is this game better then Maximo 1? YES. Maximo Vs Army of Zin is one those rare games when it does better then its predesssor. The game features more action packed gameplay and is just as challenging as the 1st. This time around you are able to save during game. It's still cheap though cause after you save you'll still have all the items and stuff but not the current level you were on.

As I have said before it is a shame this game is being so ignored. It's not even getting any commercials or advertisting when it first hit stores. Heck when this game first came out most gamestores I went to didn't have it but luckily Target had some copies. It's a real shame. Capcom deserves more respect for this game. Maybe it's because it's being ignored by such games like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and the Resident Evil series.

The game has a pretty neat story and it's even more cool when you get more powerups and new weapons as you advance in the game. There is a catch of course...some of the better moves you get will take some of your power gauge from you Super Meter away. The Super Meter lets you do all the cool specials and cool combos you do. It's not a hassle though cause you'll gain more power if you fight enough. The game is great in action but the lengh is pretty average you could beat it in less then 16 hours if you just try to beat it in story instead of collecting money to buy new items but it will be hard as heck if you do that. Lets get to it...

Good
-Great visuals
-very underrated Game
-lots of fast pace action
-some cool yet easy puzzles to solve
-20 great levels of pure enjoyment and entertainment
-A story..Well atleast a Story for me that I highly enjoyed...It's rare that I wanna beat a game just to see the Main character get the girl...and this is one of those games.
-Way better then the 1st Maximo

Bad
-A very ignored Ps2 game
-For some people the Puzzles can be really easy
-Some really frustraiting gameplay
-Needs a tad bit more levels
-I find it cheap that you can Save but not on the the current checkpoint..

Overall this is a great game, classic Maximo gameplay that is just as good if not BETTER then the original Maximo. Great Visuals, I really enjoyed the story and even though overall it's not a very long game it's still a great game and that is why I am giving it..

Like its predicessor, Army of Zin is one of the most difficult and frustrating games you'll ever love. There were times when I found myself literally screaming at the screen because I wanted to throw my controller through it and hit the monsters on the other side. Capcom really tries (and succeeds) to put the odds against Maximo the majority of the time. There are a few scenes when I wondered how I was able to make it out alive.

This time out, Maximo gets to learn new moves from old fighters he meets in battle, and can buy items from some of the street vendors he saves from evil. As difficult as the game is, and it is, Maximo "From Ghosts to Glory" was even more difficult and more frustrating.

Graphic and sound quality are above average, but certainly not in the league of some of the greats. But they don't need to be, the game play is outstanding. Conceptually, Maximo blends the best of old school gaming, with new school graphics.

A VERY worthwhile purchase, you'll definitely get your money's worth wih this title.

Great job Capcom!

Classic Gameplay doesn't slow Maximo down one bit!

Maximo vs. Army of Zin is a grand experience. Quite simply, this game has everything. Great gameplay, exciting levels and an old skool feel to it that some will most definitely appreciate.

Capcom has a way of making a sequel that far surpasses the original. This isn't ture in Maximo. While capcom added to it they didn't try so hard to outdo Maximo: Ghost to Glory. This is a good thing for those who loved the original. But a bad thing because they also don't fix any problems with the previous installment.

Maximo is up against the Army of Zin. An Army inprisoned centuries ago in a great vault have mysteriously been released. Now the Army of Zin has a goal and that goal is to take over the world. Only Maximo can put these beings to rest and banish the Army of Zin forever.

Maximo's gameplay has been improved in this installment. The game consists of about 20 levels, with a boss every four or five levels. In each level he begins with his sword and armor. Pacing through levels has so much more depth to it than the previous one did. Gameplay has new elements and twist to it. Such as Maximo now has to rescue innocent people as well as grab all the treasures and kill all the enemies in the levels. Each level gives you a score based on how many innocents you saved, items you grabed, secret chest and enemies you've killed.

Throughout each level you'll also find peddlers who will sell Maximo items and more abilities. Not only that but Maximo can call on his friend Grim, who is invincible and can deal with Maximo's tougher foes (for the price of a grim gauge that is).

The gameplay also presents Maximo with a new weapon. In accustomed using his sword he can also use an axe that you'll find later on. Both weapons get an elemental property (The sword gets fire while the axe will get ice) and several abilities. Maximo can also use his weapon to help him up ledges.

A few things have also been done to make the game a tad bit easier. For example, Maximo's shield never breaks in this one and if you lose a life you don't lose your abilities.

But that doesn't mean Capcom fixed up everything else. For example, the game still has an elevated difficulty if you're not familiar with the Maximo universe. The other problem is that the bosses are STILL too easy. The levels can be VERY tough but the bosses for some reason... disturbingly easy compared to the rest of the game.

The game is still fun however and while it isn't as grand as the first game it satisfies.

Put on your heart boxers and have a good time.

It's been eight months since the orignal game, and Maximo was looking for his loved one, Sophia. His search was halted, however, when an army of mechanical monsters are wreaking havoc on villages, so what must one man to do with this situation? Takin' 'em down in a clash-of-the-titans brawl, as Maximo and his trademark boxers comes back in another quest in this sequel, MAXIMO vs. ARMY OF ZIN. Let me just say (or typed, in this condition) that this is a better game than the original. Gone is the cliche easy-on-the-eye sorcerers I must find from the old game, and here, I must find the easy-on-the-eye female mechanic named Tink. Gone is the cliche volcano/graveyard/iceland levels from the old game, and in AoZ, there's the village level, the sewer level, and my favorite, the airship level. Also gone from the original is the painful save system where I must PAY to save the game, but in AoZ, I can save wherever I want, in-game or in the stage selection.

The heart of the gameplay, this game hasn't changed that much since the original. My character can still jump, slash, collect, and die...a lot. There are new features in this game. It has a new hit-system, it highlights the amount of hits I took on enemies, and the more hits I make, the stronger my charcter becomes as he destroys the mecha freaks, consecutively, with ease. It isn't deep, but it works. Another cool feature is that Maximo is not alone. When he's weak and down to his boxers, with a press of a button, I can replace him with Grim as a last resort and he can do all the hard wark for Maxi' in a short time. Grim is very useful around tight situations when there's a dozen enemies against one. There's a lot more action than platformin' this time around, and when I'm not choppin' baddies, I destroy objects to open doors or destroy something else, or I save the village people from the mecha freaks, which to me saving villagers feels like doing community service, and I would've enjoy that less, if the villagers hadn't give me items and info about Maximo's capabilities and tips on how to defeat enemies, plus serving a purpose for achieving gaming perfection. Speaking of saving people, if a peddler or an old guard is saved, Maximo can buy power-ups from a peddler and new attack moves from an old guard. There's no restrictions to not go to the same levels, so I can go to any level I've completed and try to earn some more items and coins to buy more stuff for Maximo, so he can be even stronger. However, this makes the game, no matter what the difficulty, a wee-bit easy.

Production-wise, both on the graphics and sound, it's above-par. Despite the occasional choppy frame-rate, collision detections, and some awkward camera angels, the graphics has some nifty colorful enviroments, the characters are well-animated and funny, expression-wise, and so were the monsters in this game, especially the killer rabbits. I had a fun time with this personal game of "Kiww the Wabbit!" Oh, how I wuv to kiww the wabbit! Lackluster humor aside, the graphics are good and so is the audio. The music remixed some of the GHOSTS AND GOBLINS scores, which wasn't bad. The sfx on the whole is not much to listen to, but the voice acting is suprisingly superb, coming from Capcom, a company with history of games with bad VAs.

On the downside, other than the game's difficulty, it's repetative. If gamers are not fonded of destroying bad guys over and over, they might not like this game as much. The game is short, too; a typical gamer can beat this game in over a weekend, depending on one's skill. Not much on the replay value, either. I've mastered 21 levels and all I've got is an art gallery and a few storyboard movie clips. Unless I'm hooked on constantly looking at illustrations on the village women and Tink in her bikini, I wanted more than that.

Despite its shortcomings, MAXIMO vs. ARMY OF ZIN has a lot of fun qualities to look forward too, for MAXIMO fans and platform gamers alike. If you're looking for a long-term action-platformer, consider this game a strong rental. However, if you looking for a fun, laughable, easy-to-play but somewhat challenging game, then this is the game worth buying.

Over-hyped, but okay

Maximo-AOZ is a little disappointing given both the hype and time the developers had to work on this title (and that includes the pushback in the release date to Jan '04). For as much as the first one was fun - and you expected more of the same - it is not as challenging as the first one(PS2 release). This one's way too easy (all the "secret" chests are in obvious locations (big open field with nothing else around! Duh!))... The game is also shorter, only 20 levels, whereas the original had 30+ in five distinct worlds. The levels themselves are shorter too, they're about half what the originals were (or so it seems). The seamless hub-levels are gone, replaced by a linear track-like navigation. To its credit though it is easier to navigate. Those fun little skeletons have been replaced by one-dimensional mechanical enemies (the developers took one idea and ran amok with it), and they screwed with the graphics - the original Maximo looked cool, this one looks too polished. The need to rescue Innocents, while a good idea in theory, only distracts from the action and game play (You've got to talk to every one of them - and most of them involve a mini-cut-scene). I guess I just expected more of the same given the hype, and well... As the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it...and they tried to fix it. If you're a die hard Maximo fan like me, buy it. If you're a newbie, go for the first one (Ghosts & Ghouls) first - you'll get more bang for your bucks. To sum it up, given the time the developers had to work on this, the additinoal pushback release date, and the hype by a PS2 magazine (which is ususally dead on) I expected more.

'' LOTS OF FUN '' ! !

I WAS A BIG FAN OF THE FIRST MAXIMO GAME CALLED '' GHOSTS TO GLORY '' BUT THERE WERE DRAWBACKS TO IT. MAINLY THE EASE AT WHICH YOU CAN PLUMMET TO YOUR DEATH ..BUT THIS FOLLOW UP IS A VAST IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST GAME .NO MORE FALLING TO YOUR DEATH, AND MORE TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED.. ALL THE BOSSES ARE FUN TO FIGHT , AND NOT ALL THAT HARD EITHER.YOUR ENEMIES ARE ROBOTS MADE FOR AN EVIL RULER CALLED '' ZIN '', AND EVEN KING ACHILLES MAKES AN APPEARANCE AS A BOSS TO FIGHT AT THE END OF THE GAME.THE BEST PART OF THE GAME IS THAT YOU CAN TURN INTO YOUR GRIM REAPER COMRADE FROM THE FIRST GAME.AND BOY CAN HE REALLY SLICE THRU THE ENEMIES TOO ! ! ! AND OF COURSE YOU GET MORE UPGRADES ,TREASURE CHESTS TO UNCOVER ,AND TONS OF OTHER GOODIES AS WELL. AND YOU'LL NEED THE COINS TOO, TO BUY STUFF FROM THE PEDDLER . LUCKILY FOR YOU , THE INNOCENTS YOU RESCUE ALONG YOUR TRAVELS GIVE YOU REWARDS AS WELL.THE LEVELS ARE NOT TOO HARD ,AND ARE LOADS OF FUN TO GO THRU TOO.SO PICK UP YOUR COPY TODAY AND HAVE FUN AT PLAYING A REALLY COOL GAME THAT WILL GIVE YOU HOURS UPON HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT...

Maximo Vs. The Army Of Zin is Capcom's sequel to last year's Maximo: Ghost To Glory, whose character design and atmosphere is loosely based on the old Ghosts And Ghouls arcade games. Army Of Zin refines every postive aspect of the first game and eliminates all the annoying quirks fans could possibly complain about in a platformer. The difficulty has been lowered to a more reasonable level, camera movement is fluid, the graphics are beautiful, the music is just right for the mood, and the whole game is just more fun than the last Maximo. Even though Army Of Zin may be lacking in terms of new skills for Maximo, he can now perform combo attacks with his sword that allow for much more satisfying battles. There are still a few issues with hit detection present...grabbing onto a ledge from an awkward angle is often more difficult than it should be. Despite overly-critical reviews, I think platformer fans will be pleased with this sequel. Hey, at least it's proof that Capcom can still make a decent action game.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game is the great grandson of the old "Ghosts & Goblins" series. It's has more old-school combat action than your typical platformer. Some may find this game difficult or repetitive. Not me. I enjoy this game because of the challenge. In general, it has great graphics and smooth gameplay.
