Showdown:Legends of wrestling was better...

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

I bought this game used, and I have to say I was a little bit disapointed. It didn't meet my expectations. If you already own "SHOWDOWN LEGENDS OF WRESTLING" then there is really no reason to purchase this one. There are several cons here... First, this game is missing some notable legends. Where is Ric Flair? Or where's Randy Savage? I could think of more legends that were ignored when this game came out. Second, The Gambling thing to win coins is very dumb and nearly impossible! I won 1 blue coin, But that was it. Third, Why bother trying to unlock legends in the game when they are all available on "SHOWDOWN:LEGENDS OF WRESTLING?" Fourth, The Create A wrestler mode didn't at all impress me. Because it all had pretty much the same features to choose from in "SHOWDOWN LEGENDS OF WRESTLING." (What a bummer.)But however, I do think that the Theatre mode was kinda cool. You select a legends name from the list and it shows a breif interview about that legends carreer. (A nice litle bonus.) Also if you want to play a battle royal, you don't have to go through a tiresome 30 man rumble. You can select either 15,20,or 25 man rumble if you choose. Or if you don't feel like wrestling at the moment you can be the referee and select CPU wrestlers to go at it. Those were the only features I liked in the game. But all in all this game was a little disapointing. And did you notice that most of the wrestlers on there were really big. Since when did Jimmy Snuka ever have arms like the incredible hulk? If you own other legends of wrestling games, don't bother with this one.

Legends the orginal for the ps2, gamecube, and xbox was a first for Acclaim. It had good wrestlers even some of them i did not know who the heck they were. The sequel looks good and better than the first if acclaim can fix the problems that were in the first game. If the game is good that prehaps Acclaim can add current legends like Understaker, The rock, Stonecold, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angel, Brock Lesener, and a few WCW favorites like Goldberg, STing, Ric Flair, and Booker T in a 3rd sequel.

I think Acclaim should look at THQ's WWF Smackdown! series and try to match head to head with the gameplay and storymode and match types.

MY VERDICT ON THE Legends of Wrestling (very nearly 4 stars)

Pick any wrestler that you can remember who appeared on kiddies' lunchboxes in the 90's and they're in this game; containg such wrestlers as, Hulk Hogan, Andre The Giant and the Legion of Doom.

There is a great wrestling retrospective about this game, but it is not the greatest game ever to step in the ring. There's a wealth of wrestlers, but not a great amount of moves. Most fighters share pretty similam grappling moves, twist-your-arm submission holds and finishers.

Reasons for buying it:
-Wrestling nostalgia
-Dozens of prize fighters
-Big Daddy vs WWE!

Reasons for leaving it:
-Slows down with several players
-Better wrestling games available
-Characters look plastic!

Graphics/visuals: 2D crowd and action-figure characters.
-7.5/10

Sound: Original entrance music and rock music, which isn't bad.
-7.4/10

Gameplay: Cage, ladder and blood action.
-6.5/10

Life Span: Lots of wrestlers and plenty of places to take 'em.
-7.6/10

Overall Score and thoughts:

I give this game: 6.4/10 (64%)
---Nostalgia aside, there are better wrestling games out there. WWE SmackDown! Shut your Mouth is another option.

Why this is great before I even set eyes on it...

Kids...wrestle as Andy Kaufman! That's right...wrestle as one of the greatest performers of our time. Andy...oh, Andy.

This game is horrible

I mean, sure it has the eight man tag, which is immpossible to beat, and the 30 man battle royal, wich isn't a battle royal at all. In the season you always have to please the crowd, the special ref is boring because the computer practicaly does everything for you wether you like it or not, and there are barley any matches! And in order to unlock things, you have to win green coins, the only coins you get, then they want red coins, and blue coins, which you can only get by gambling, which has a 1\10000000000000000 chance of winning.

Gave it a try.....eh.

I read a lot of the reviews on this board and first off let me say that I'm not a new wrestling fan. I didn't jump on the bandwagon when the soap opera of the WWF/E started. Saying that, I was going into this with high hopes.

The controls are pretty good. Not great, not horrible. However, MUCH better than Acclaim's previous control system.

Graphics...wow. I read the reviews that said they were 'cartoony' and I actually usually like that look. But cartoony is an understatement. These guys look like comic book characters. Sid Vicious is 3 times bigger than the Incredible Hulk would be. A little TOO cartoonish.

Music. Not bad, definitely not what you'd expect for an "old-school" wrestling game though.

The cage and ladder matches are pretty good. Nice idea, and good system for that. Best features in the game.

Well, I'm tired of writing this review. All in all I'm glad I rented it first. DEFINITELY rent it before buying and if you weren't a wrestling fan before the emergence of Stone Cold I wouldn't suggest this.

Not horrible, but nothing special.

WARNING: If you have any desire to play this game, rent it first.

The game is good when it's good, but it's BAD when it's bad.

GRAPHICS: 5/5
This is where the game shines. Models look very nice (albeit cartoonish and misproportioned) and the CAW mode, while undetailed, can make lifelike CAWs that look nothing different from in-game characters.

SOUND: 4/5
Depending on your tastes, you may or may not disagree with my pick for sound. There are some cool songs on here, such as "Headstrong" by Trapt and "Get Away" by Earshot, but if you're not a big fan of these types of bands, you may prefer to get the X-box version (if you have one) and do a custom soundtrack. As far as entrances go, they're OK... a bit repetitive the hundredth time, however. Why a 4/5 then? The simple coolest feature ever in CAW mode: you can choose from a large, pre-voiced list of first names, last names, and nicknames, and the ring announcer will announce your height, weight, hometown (also a pre-voiced list), and your name! It's amusing.

GAMEPLAY: 1/5
This is where the game could be better. Moves are done with the basic concept: Push a button for a basic set-up, push another button to modify it. When it tells you to push a button at a certain time, do it. It's a button-masher's fantasy, as the only skill really involved is the timing of extra-powerful moves, reversals, and to make sure you're not being repetitive with your moves.

OVERALL: 3/5
A good effort by Acclaim, but not worth the price tag. Spend your money on WWE SmackDown!: Shut Your Mouth! instead.

HULK RULES!

By far the best wrestling game yet! The graphics, the ease of play, its all there.

Not worth it

This is a horribly slow and boring game. The characters don't move like humans and more like stiff clay figures. Success in story mode is based on pops from the crowd. Nice concept, but must I follow the same pattern just to get my popularity quotient up? And the game is quite prone to random button-mashing strategies.

I'm especially disappointed in the modeling of Bret Hart: the "Bret Hart" in the SD4 Create-A-Wrestler looks more like the Hitman than the "El Generico" character in LoW II. (To be fair, the rest don't fair so badly: Andre the Giant was well done, as well as Andy Kaufman. Yes, ANDY KAUFMAN.)

There is one shining star: the fifteen 3-5 minute shoot interviews (under game extras). It's fun to see the "Million Dollar Man" DiBiasi talk about how poor he was as a wrestler, and Jerry "the King" Lawler reminisce about his match with Andy Kaufman. Other interviewees (fifteen in all) are Rocky ("Father of the Rock") Johnson, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Hulk Hogan, Bob Backlund, George "The Animal" Steele, and Jimmy Hart. This is the ONLY reason to rent out game. Otherwise, don't bother.
