Square Breaks Genre Barriers

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 6
Date: November 29, 2002

(Please note: this review is intended for gamers already vaguely familiar with Squaresoft's video game library, or at least the Final Fantasy series)

Although it's almost completely unlike Square's beloved Final Fantasy series, features Disney characters and otherwise seems to dissuade Square's usual RPG-devouring audience, give Kingdom Hearts serious consideration.

Square rarely ever breaks into the platformer genre; to date, they've released only three stateside games with true active combat systems (Brave Fencer Musashi and, to a different extent, Bushido Blade 1 & 2). They have, however, completely succeeded with Kingdom Hearts. The Zelda-esque control schematic allows for very easy-to-pick-up gameplay while allowing for more complicated, RPG-esque thought-engrossing play. Both the standard interface and the battle system are well thought out.

The storyline and character development itself moves at a reasonable pace, although you're sort of thrown in abruptly at the beginning of the game without much explanation in a typically Squaresoft fashion. The incorporation of Disney characters into a Squaresoft universe is done flawlessly; all borrowed characters look and act exactly as they should, without seeming extraordinarily out of place (after the initial shock). The game's music and voice acting are both incredibly well done - after all, you can't go wrong with such big names as Utada Hikaru & Haley Joel Osmont.

If you're a closed-minded Final Fantasy junkie, don't get this game; you'll hate it, and it will hate you. If you're looking for a fun, enjoyable leap out of Square's usual fare and a solid gaming experience, pick this game up immediately.

Final Fantasy and Disney together!

If you think you are to old to play a game just because it has disney characters in it, you'd better change your mind. I thought this would be and okay game, but I rented it, and now I'm obsessed. I played all day, for 3 days(when I could). It drove me to buying the game.
This game has a lot of Final Fantasy characters in it. FF7, FF8, FF9, and even FF10. The battles are like none ever. You have 3 members fighting, and you only control one. Donald and Goofy fight along side you. It's not like FF battles, where this weird formation appears, then you have to choose what they do. No, you keep walking, and they just appear. You just fight, while Donald and Goofy(or someone else, if you are on certain planets) fight to. You can also choose how Donald and Goofy fight. You can choose how often or when to use items, and what types of attacks(normal, magic, you know), and how often.
While you fight, you can sit around and let Donald and Goofy fight. If they die, stars appear over their heads. In a little while, they come back. This isn't smart in regular battles, since you need to level up too, but in boss battles, just let them go at it, and when they die(not really, but you know what I mean), just finish them off! All of you will get experience, and your happy. But it can be a lot of fun doing most of the work to.
I give this 5 stars. It's good for all ages. Try it out for yourself!

Not so Disney

I know that most people think that this is a little kids game because it is by Disney. Every time that I meet one of these people all that I can tell them is how stupid they have been. This game is more of a FF game than a Disney game by far. The game is mostly fighting complex mosters, fave FF characters, and going through maze versions of many differant Disney films. (these Disney mazes are difficult and not some silly kid thing)

I love this game and you will too. Even if you aren't an RPG fan you will be unable to leave the awe-inspiring Disney world of FF as you scrutinize every wall to see if there is a secret passage.

awesome game, try it b4 you dismiss it bcuz the disney logo

when I first read abut this game in my gamepro I thought I was reading lamepro "a spoof of the magazine that they put in their magazine time to time" I read it, I laughed for a little while.
later I read the new gamepro issue based on E3, I was suprised to see it I read the breif summary for it and it looked promising
Then came to my september issue of GamePro, I read the 2 page reveiw for Kingdom Hearts, I was floored, It looked Like Final Fantasy, the reveiw was awesome and it got 4.5's all around and a 5.0 "highest" for sound. The cast they have for this game is great, well I wouldnt listen to their music "mandy moore, Lance Bass" They also have Haley Joel Osmont, "sixth sense" its cool they got some good voice actors for it I am seriously looking forward to this game I already pre ordered it, my advice is for any RPG fan or fan of good quality games is to GET IT!...

One of the best games ever made!

How many times as a kid did you wish you go go exploring in the worlds of Disney? Ever want to swim like Ariel or fly like Peter Pan? Well, you can do all of that and plenty more!

This game is amazing. You play as Sora, who is on a quest for his lost friends after an evil force rips their world apart. Along the way, you get the help of Donald and Goofy, and depending on the world, help from Disney favorites as Jack Skellington, Beast, and Tarzan!

The game itself is long--like 30 plus hours of game play. There are many side quests and the game is fairly open eneded. One of my favorite side quests was the "100 Acre Woods" in which you get to play with Pooh, Pigglet and all your 100 Acre friends.

There is no graphic violence (a shock for a PS2 game!) which makes it suitable for the entire family. In fact, my son who is very young, likes to watch daddy play with some of his favorite characters.

If you have a PS2 and a family, you must give this game a shot!

I have been looking forward to this game all year. I was the first person in the mall when it opened to buy it. Needless to say it was well worth the wait. Those who say this game is terrible because it has Disney characters in it are just plain ignorant. Let me tell you something, this game is HARD! This game is a lot harder than Final Fantasy 9 and 10. The first thing gamers will notice is the unique control system which takes a few hours to get used to. The lock on system works great in battles. This is a complete change from anything ever done in Final Fantasy games. Fights occur without going to a separate fighting stage. Gamers have to be smart and fast in order to win some of the harder battles. In order to use an item, summon, ect, one must do it while battling. The enemy wont stop and wait while you figure out what you want to do. This system is fun but frustrating. I prefer the old style turn based fights. The WORST part about this game is the controls. Forget about the camera. The controls are terrible. There are times when you have to jump from one platform to another. The jumping controls are so bad you will fall most of the time. It is VERY difficult to simply jump on a box. Sora seems to float in the air and you have no idea where he will land. Very bad. The graphics are flawless. They are Disney perfect. They could not get any better. Well, except for the Gummi whip which you use to fly to different worlds. The graphics, control, sound are so bad that they simply do not belong in this wonderful game. Not to mention that the Gummi flights are just down right boring. The sound is great but it could use improvement. I thought there would be a lot more voice acting in this game like Final Fantasy X but I was wrong. Most of the game is reading. Which is fine but I was looking forward to hearing those wonderful Disney voices. The music is great but levels like Wonderland isn't so good when you've heard the same tune 50 billion times. The storyline is great. It's not as good as Final Fantasy storylines but it's the best it could be for Disney. Bottom line,...I dare you to play this game on the hardest level, collect all the secrets, beat it in under 30 hours and TRY NOT to enjoy it. This is a beautiful work of art that should not be missed by anybody.

I have never been so thrilled to play a video game in my whole life! The story, graphics, music, and gameplay are fantastic.

FUN 4/5 - This game is extremely fun. though it my have little replay value for most people, the game is worth the 20 bucks!!! I didn't give it a 5/5 becuase some of the bosses are very aggravating (I have been stuck on RIKU II for a week and I finally beat it!).

MUSIC 5/5 - The music of this game is incredible. It is beautifully orchastrated and it has a catchy theme song that is both annoying and good!!

STORY 5/5 - After Sora, Riku, and Kairi's island is destroyed by the heartless, Sora must team up with Donald and Goofy to search through many, many disney worlds to find Kairi and Riku, King Mickey, and to solve the mystery of the heartless.

DIFFICULTY (HARD) - I've never played a more difficult Disney game. However, the story and fun factor drive you to over come some of the really tough bosses (such as Riku II [over 20 tries], Maleficent [8 tires], Ansem, Ursula [6 tries], and Clayton [10 tries]). But there are some easy bosses, too (like Behemoth [in one try], Cerberus [one try], Riku I [one try], and Maleficent dragon [5 tries]).

Some think it odd to combine final fantasy and Disney. I could care less about final fantasy (because the games bored me with their attack system), but what hooked me was Disney. In the game, you travel to many lands such as Wonderland (meet Alice, beat the cards...), Deep jungle (team up with tarzan and defeat Clayton), Atlantica (argh! I hate the swimming controls...but you team up with ariel and beat ursula!!), and the favorite: Halloweentown (team with jack Skellington and beat Lock, Shock, Barrel, and oggie Boogie!)!!!!!! AMAZING!

There are several side quests too:
4 secret bosses
mini games in 100 acre wood
collecting postcards
99 dalmations
using trinity marks
colesium tournaments (watch out for hades cup, and sephiroth!!)

Team up with:
Beast (Hollow Bastion),
Aladin (Agrabah),
Ariel (Atlantica),
Tarzan (Deep Jungle),
Peter Pan (Neverland),
Jack Skellington (Halloweentown)

i'll keep this short and sweet. i'm not a big rpg gamer, but a friend of mine persuaded me to get KH. he warned me about the start, and honestly i wanted to go crazy trying to follow the first 20 min. i kept screamin, "WHY AM I FALLING AGAIN?!?!" but, after a quick call back to my buddy, and some reconvincing, he assured me that i'd love the game after the start.

after i got off the island, it was like opening up pandora's box. all of a sudden, there were new weapons, moves, spells, worlds, enemies to conquer! the game gave you places to lvl up, but gameplay never got stale or stagnant. there were constantly new enemies or worlds just waiting for an ass-whoopin from this kid.

the only thing i do have to say about this i didn't absolutely love was the ending. the last boss was so easy, but the trailer to KH2 made it all worthwhile

One of the best games ever made.

Kingdom Hearts is, in my opinion, the best game ever created. I just fell in love with the story, the characters, the worlds..everything that made the game so creative and unique. Of course, I'm not going to just gush about how super-ultra-fantastic it is without giving details.

I know that when the game was first launched in the U.S (back in 2002 or so), many people were skeptical about the whole Square Enix and Disney partnership thing, and many more refused to play the game because they either hated one of the two. I wasn't one of them. The two companies really succeded in making the two seperate themes (Disney movies and Final Fantasy games) really blend together in a way that makes you realize that it's not a sequel to FFVII or another franchise Disney movie game; it's a totally different world--an alternative universe, I suppose-- where they co-exist. And I know that sounds like a bunch of nonsense of a fangirl..but it's true.

The game is about a boy named Sora who lives on Destiny Islands with his friends Kairi and Riku; the trio plan to leave their home on a raft to find other worlds. But, their little adventure was never meant to be, for a bigger destiny awaited them. On the night before their scheduled departure, a storm hits the island, causing Sora to rush to the play island where the raft was being kept, the irony is that the raft being blown away was really, the least of his problems. Strange creatures invade the island, Riku is swallowed by the darkness, Kairi vanishes into thin air..and he gets the Keyblade. He then battles one of the(a big one) creatures--the Heartless-- and after the brunette defeats it, his world crumbles beneathe his feet. When he awakens, Sora finds himself in Traverse Town, where he meets Squ..erm, Leon, Aerith, and Yuffie who explain to him about the Heartless. Also, he bumps into Goofy and Donald, who were searching the the Keyblade Master (King Mickey told them to find the bearer of the Keyblade and sta-- follow him). The three begin their journey to seal the Keyholes, discover the secret of the Heartless and defeat them, and find King Mickey, Kairi, and Riku.

You go to many worlds where Disney and Final Fantasy characters make cameos..honestly, there are only four orignal characters in the game (Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Ansem). The voices are wonderful and the cutscenses are beautiful. I cried atleast twice during the game, maybe more. Simple and Clean (the theme song by Hikaru Utada) is one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard, and it fits the game so well. I promise you, whether you're a hardcore gamer or just a fan of Disney, you will love this game.

Or, you know, hate it..but I really doubt it, but that's just my opinion.

Disney and Square? Who Woulda' Thought?

This game is THE best work I have ever seen. A lot of people I know were sceptic on Disney and Square working together to make this...masterpeice. I Am a gamer at heart. I've played the Final Fantasy series many times and this game CD is gonna stay in my PS2 console for a while. All gamers who love FF should love this game to (if they hate Disney, then don't, but who hates Disney?)
