A great game but incomplete

The MechWarrior 4 series of games has been around a very long time and has a very active online support community. League play still goes on. In fact, I am a member of one online team (Lords of Destiny) and was a member of a team playing the old NetMech version of MW2, the Northwind Highlanders). However, be warned: Microsoft does not support this franchise, having put all of its MechWarrior work into the Xbox and abandoned the PC years ago. The two latest Mech games are Xbox only. This is not that bad since they are not as good as the older PC games in graphics, game play, or customization of mechs. Also be warned - the two additional Mech Packs of Inner Sphere and Clan Mechs are NOT included in this package and still must be purchased separately - M$ is squeezing every dime out of the franchise that it can. On the other hand, the MekTek community has supplied dozens of additional Mechs, weapons, and maps, so you can get a lot more for free (contributions cheerfully accepted, of course!). Still, if you like SF games, and especially if you like the giant mech concept, this package will give you the "pick of the litter." Grab it while you can as undoubtedly people will continue to play this game for years to come.

Brawn, Brains, and Skill

The best game ever (I am 56 yrs old). NOT an arcade style game. It's been around as a board and computer game a LONG time. I have been playing offline and online for years.

Online is a pure team effort. You are usually on voice coms (there are many programs) which make it a great social and team game. Online, my team plays 8v8 at a time. We have players of all ages and walks of life. From students to airline pilots.

You need brawn (the game provides that), brains, skill, and teamwork. To win, you have to be really savvy.

You can play offline by yourself in an arena or map, or missions.

There are many maps (fantastic graphics) to make things interesting. There are a few online leagues for team play.

You basically drive a walking "tank". Various sizes. Many weapons of many types. In team play, strategy is paramount. You can't just join and run. Adults will love this game.

Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries is the latest of the games, with a few upgrades by Mektek. One online league is forming that uses the original MW4 Vengance.

Highly recommended.

Excellent!

Excellent! I was thrilled when the original MW:4 Vengence was released, but it needed some fine tuning. Vengence has a very good plot, but a little laking in the variety of the missions.

Black Knight and Mercenaries compliment Vengence very well. The new mechs are awsome, and the missions even better. The variety of missions in Black Knight, for instance, really increases the replay value, along with the fun.

Mechwarrior has always been a favorite, but the packs incuded in this package are by far the best installment so far.

The best part of all: Mechwarrior 4: Compilation includes both. Incredible deal. If you were to buy Vengence, Black Knight, and Mercenaries separately your looking at over $40.

Dont be fooled by the low price, it is still of very high value.

I wish Microsoft would continue the Mechwarrior series. Mechwarrior 4 Compilation is a very fun game that runs nicely on average hardware, though a nice video card helps steady your target reticle :)

Best robot game ever

There are loads of robot games in the video gaming universe, but none can come close the MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries experience.
With precision joystick or mouse, gamers get to experience the exhilirating thrills and spills of giant robot combat minus the arcade feel of less serious games like MechAssault.
MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries is also more than just a first person shooter game since it involves armoured combat that is reminiscent of medieval knight dueling but with hi-tech weapons.
Best of all, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries has a thriving online community that is replete with open game servers, leagues, clans, mods and fan-fiction writers.
So, get the compilation, even if all you want is just MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries. It helps to play MechWarrior 4 and its Black Knight expansion first before playing MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries.
That way, you can prepare yourself for going online to play Mercs with veterans. Rest assured, many vets are more than happy to accommodate fresh blood.

Fun game, but a little buggy

I've been into the mechwarrior games for years, and this compilation pack is a great deal on the MW4 series. There are some bugs in the programs, I've had a few complete system hangs in the middle of missions, and the pathfinding abilities of the other mechs on your side are really bad, they get stuck behind buildings and can even get stuck on each other in tight quarters preventing any of them from moving and forcing you to restart the mission. Despite the bugs, this is a fun, fast-paced game, and I've enoyed many hours playing it.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries is fun to play, but other than that 4 and it's expansion pack were ok, but not games that I would play enthuisiastically. I recommend playing 4 and it's expansion pack before you play Mercenaries, because I played Mercenaries before I played 4 and it's expansion pack and it kind of ruined the experience for me, because I thought that Mercenaries was way better.

I loved Mechwarrior 2 back in the day. I decided to try this game and for the cheap price I am very happy. Make sure you have a good joystick with 6 or 8 buttons, my old 4 button didn't cut it.

One of the best games ever, worthy of the Mechwarrior namesake

This game is a great deal of fun. Mechwarrior 2 is my all time favorite game... Mechwarrior 3 fell well short of expectations. Then came, finally, Mechwarrior 4.

The game play is dynamic and fast paced. The weapons behave in a "realistic" manner. Damage is inflicted in a life like way also. For example, destroy a leg and the mech hobbles and can no longer go in reverse.

The graphics are a touch old, but still look great. The sounds are also great.

The different levels, recruit to veteran, offer vastly different challenges. I had to start again because the game was too difficult, recruit turned out to be just right.

Anyway, buy this game!

A giant step backwards into dog poo, classic Microsoft mashing of a great concept

My son and I have played Mechwarrior 3 for several years, and really loved it!

I held off for the longest time in getting Mechwarrior 4 because I had read that the graphics were not as good and the robots did not move as well/realistically as in Mechwarrior 3.

Well, the prices kept dropping, and finally one day, bored out of my brain, I saw this MW4 compilation on Amazon.com at a really cheap price, and so I got it.

WOW! Despite the low expectations, the game turned out to be even worse than I had expected. How to characterize MW4 other than to say that it is closer to Mechwarrior 2 in terms of the graphics and motion realism of the giant robots than to Mechwarrior 3?

If you read the reviews carefully, you will see what I mean. People who have played Mechwarrior 3 and really, really liked its graphics and realism will hate MW4, because MW4 is a giant step backwards in both areas. People who have never played any Mechwarrior games might like MW4, but believe me, MW3 is better. People who really liked MW2 will probably like MW4 because the robotic action in MW4 is very similar to MW2, and MW4 is basically a slightly improved version of MW2, with online play also available.

One would think that computer software, especially a graphically driven computer game, could only get better and more realistic with each new version. NOT!

How could this atrocity of a game happen, you might wonder? Well, the makers of the Mechwarrior series went through a series of ownership changes and finally were sold to Darth Bill and his latte-drinking Evil Empire.

How do you spell bad software? M-I-C-R-O-S-O-F-T

My son didn't like this game either. And so I wanted to return this piece of dog poo, but found out that Amazon.com would at most give only half credit for opened computer software, plus charge for the return shipping. I calculated that would leave me with all of about $5, which probably wouldn't cover the cost of gasoline to drive to the Post Office or UPS.

So beware.
