Great Graphics and Great Game Play

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 38 / 38

My family and I LOVED the movie Ice Age 2, and so, of course, my 7 year old wanted the game for PS2!

I was hesitant to pay the $ for it, but decided to get it for him. Boy, is it worth the money!

Both of us have played the game for HOURS today and yesterday, and it's truly a lot of fun. Playing as Scrat, you roam through different areas collecting acorns (think Spyro collecting gems or Curious George collecting bananas). Small brown acorns (1 point), medium green acorns (5 points) and chestnuts (20 points) go towards unlocking bonuses. In each area, there are walnuts that Scrat has to find in order to leave the area and go on to the next one. He can also get fruit from trees and bushes, which helps to replenish his energy. If you use the sniff function (L1), it will help you find hidden fruit.

Throughout the game, there are sparkling signs. When you press the triangle button, a hint appears. (Early in the game, the hints are straightforward. As the game progresses, though, you have to think creatively. No worries if you're stuck. You can choose a Hint button that helps.)

Scrat can also interact with objects. For example, some acorns are buried in the ground (you can see the tops), and you have to use the triangle button to dig them out. If his energy meter starts to run down because of fighting with rodents and other animals, you can replenish it by interacting with flowers and collecting their petals. Some games (and enemies) need to be combated with pebbles, so when Scrat is close to a pebble pile, he can collect up to 25 at a time.

The mini-games are a blast, too...and not exactly easy! The first one, Sid's Slide on "The Eviscerator", has you going down several long slides with the goal of getting at leat 7,000 points at the end. To get these points, you slide on acorns and chestnuts, go through gates, and use the directional button for mid-air flip routines. However, watch out for falling ice! Every time you run into a piece of ice--or miss a directional challenge sequence--points are deducted!

Another fun mini-game is penguin bowling (the penguins are the pins!). You have to score 100 points before you move to the next part of the game. There's a monkey shooting gallery, a Whac-a-Mole-type game, and other fun (but challenging!) mini-games.

Scrat find himself climbing up walls (some are slippery!), swinging on vines, climbing trees, jumping ledges and through treetops, swimming underwater (he has a bubble meter showing how much air he has left!), etc. He even gets helps from other creatures, like when he must climb on the back of a swamp bird in order to get to higher ledges.

There are 5 levels at each place, including the ice/water park, the forest, the mud bog, the sloth village, and more (we're not through the game yet).

Although my son is a pretty experienced platform gamer (Sly Cooper, Crash Bandicoot, the Spyro series, etc.), he still needs my help on some of the sections. For example, I had to do Sid's Slide about 4 or 5 times before I finally accumulated 7,000 points! This game is great for kids and adults alike, but since the hints have to be read (they're not spoken) this could prove problematic for beginner readers.

Also, if you're skittish about kids hitting animals or adolescent humor like fart games (no joke...one of the games has a Fructose Bear who has a Fart meter that helps propel Scrat to acorns on ledges LOL), then you may want to think twice about the game. But if your child is used to mild "cartoon violence" and humor like I've described, I think you'll be delighted and amused with this game.

Family Fun

You get to BE Scrat! Now if you're a huge Scrat fan like I am, this should be enough for you... I rented this also worried that it would be another kid's game with no real gameplay. I saw on the back that Scrat is a playable character- and it turns out that aside from a Sid mini-game, Scrat is THE character you play as through the whole game!! I think the review above pretty much covers all the game details, but I have to agree that it's fun, not just for kids - you have to figure things out. There's the collecting element for Spyro fans. Back to Scrat. He has a range of little attacks and motions that you can prance around doing forever! Kicks, sniffing, jumping. I was sad when the game came to an end, because I would have loved to keep running through levels as Scrat, defeating animals, swimming, squeezing through trees, playing games like bowling and playing dead, and just being adorable!

Nice Game

Its a nice game the graphics could be better but a nice gameplay and is nice and easy.
I play it when i get tired of all the bloodshed in the other games,i switch to this game for just plain fun.
My small cousin bro who is 9 just loves it.

Oh,man do I love this game. It doesn't contain much cartoon violance and I'm still confused about wwhy this game is rated E for everyone ages 10+.I mean the game is like kind of easy once you get the hang of it.The only hard part of it is the beat the clock challenges.See,I have a 5-year old brother who played this game and he knew how to play it, just like that. You know what my favorite character to play with is scrat. Scrat is a good player and he's more fun. You know else is good about the game? They have the people from the movie, they had Ray Romano,John Leguazamo,Dennis Leary, and Josh Peck.Like I said, this game is totally adorable.

My granddaughter really likes this game. It was a big hit at Christmas.

Game was way to short, beat it in about 5 hours or less.

I watched Ice Age: The Meltdown on Blu-Ray DVD and loved it and the main characters. So I wanted to check out the game.

Maybe I am to much of a gamer for something like this, but I wanted to take a brake from playing adult games like Doom 3, Half Life 2, Resident Evil (pick a number), GTA, so I found out that my nephew had this game. Which was great becuase I really didn't want to buy it for $30. I didn't think I would be able to sit down and beat it in one day. Games now days are very long. 20 + hours. So I was expecting it to be really long.

I was surprised and dissapointed that the only character you could be was Scrat. They did have a Sid mini game (which was the best part of the game), but you only got to do that once. The game got really boring after about 2 hours of doing the same thing over and over. Gather nuts, find the golden nuts, exit the level. You didn't even have to fight the enemies, you coudl just run away from them. They did have one boss fight which was a spider but that was it. They also had about 3-5 other little mini games that you had to do to pass on to the next level. Overal I was thinking that eventhough this is a kids game, I couldn't really see kids liking it to much, becuase it was way to simply and you did the same thign over and over. After I beat it and unlocked the secrets, which there wasn't that many to unlock, I put this game in that pile of games you have that you never want to touch again. It has no replay value at all. I know kids shouldn't be playing M rated games, but I found that they last so much longer and have a better replay value to them then this.

I wish they made this game longer and you could play with all the charaters. Also make the levels different so you woudln't get bored so fast running around collecting nuts over and over.

Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 is also a great kids game. Very long, about 50 hours of game play.

I have purchased 3 of these games as gifts - I love it

The graphics are right on. The game plays amazing on the different levels. This game is truly "E" for everyone. I finished the games and went back to the beginning to start over.

Awesome

My daughter loves Scrat. So, this was a no brainer for me to buy it for her. The game is not so easy that you can turn your kid loose on it without staying with her to play it. However, my daughter is still learning how to play on the playstation. This game is hilarious! You will want to play it again. My daughter is 6 by the way.

Great game!
