If you already have GH2, you've seen everything this game has to offer. There aren't as many songs, there are no new characters (actually fewer), and the same old Venues. By purchasing this game, you are spending $50 on 30 new songs. If I were you, I'd wait and try GH3 in October, and maybe catch this on sale or get a good used copy. Still a fun game, but for fifty bucks, you gotta offer something more.
Could have been so much better

The kids (and me) were so excited about this game before it came out. When we got it, we were all disappointed. There are so many great 80s songs and I'm wondering why they chose the songs that they did for this game. There are at least 7 songs out of 30 that I've never even heard (and I was a teen in the 80s!). And the shop sucks! There are no extra songs to buy and very little extra stuff. It seems like this game was thrown together without much thought.
More like Guitar Zero... wait that's no good

Compared to Guitar Hero 2 this game has less characters (no new ones either), 75% the number of songs GH2 had (not including songs you can buy, which for the record Encore has NONE), no new venues, no new guitars. They changed the clothing of their characters, slapped some neon colors around, and well, that's basically it. Sure there is new music, but as you can see from the full set list, the 30 songs aren't as many as GH1/2 and certainly aren't up to the high standard from GH.
Let me sum up the game in one word: Cash-in.
Why would Harmonix, a respected company, put out this desperate cash grab:
1 They aren't making Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and hope it will suck as much as Encore does.
2 They are owned by EA now.
Honestly if this was a 30-35 dollar game, then maybe 4 stars. But a smaller weaker set list with no original content? C'mon.
Save your money for Rock Band Special Edition or Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock .
If you don't like 80's music, this is not for you......

Ok, i'm reading some very bad feedback on this game. I know this is my opinion, but this game really ROCKS!!!. Ok so it's 80's music if you didn't already know, but some of the best tracks. I have not yet wanted to skip a song (like on the previous G.H. games). I will say who ever covered "Radar Love" is not that great. That song I feel like there is guitar work missing. I hope someone feels the same about that. But it's a great game. So what if it's a rip off of G.H.2 but just 80's songs. What do you expect from a game like this? More songs? I'll agree, the price of 49.99 I'll agree as well, but go to best buy before the end of this week while it's on sale for 39.99. The game play is the same. I'm 5 starring every song (I'm playing on medium though) and it's just fun to rock out to. I'm not dogging this one. This is the same as the others. I knew that there wasn't going to be much more on this game, that's what G.H.3 is for. So it's simple, if you don't appreciate 80's music, then this game is not for you. If you simply love 80's music, then wipe the dust off of your guitar controllers, plug it in and BANG YOUR HEAD!!!
Absolutely HORRIFIC!

Avoid this game at all costs. I was one of the first to buy this game because of how much I loved GH 2. Too bad this game made me want to avoid all future GH series. This game has 2 maybe 3 songs that are actually fun to play. All of the songs are boring 90% of them I had no idea what they were or why they were chosen for the game. I got 5 gold stars on almost every song my first time around so I knew this 80's game was worthless so I sold it on ebay the next day. It was not fun to play YOU CAN'T BUY MORE SONGS and it's all the same characters just in stupid outfits. Save your money.
Only for hardcore Guitar Hero players.

Graphics: 4/5 Slightly improved, but for the most part, look the same. The venues look the same but with a few added things around it to make it look like it's set in the 80's. The characters also have an 80's look. Still looks a lot like Guitar Hero II.
Sound: 4/5 The sound varies in this game. The covers go from pretty bad to decently good. Many of the songs are good ones, but not fun ones to play on Guitar Hero.
Control: 4/5 The game feels just like any other Guitar Hero game. On expert the game plays very well like always.
Fun: 4/5 Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80's is, to me, a dissapointment. Only about 1/3 of the songs are fun to play, another third are okay to play occasionally, and the last third are absolute terrible to play. Rocks The 80's will be bought no matter what by a huge Guitar Hero fan, but is it really worth playing a good 10 songs for $50?

My advice to everyone is to Wait. Wait until the price drops. I was disapointed in the game. I grew up in the 80's and couldn't wait to play my favorite songs from my childhood, and my initial reaction was what I expected, but when I realized that there are no bonus tracks that you can buy, no new characters, and very few guitars, and skins, I felt a little cheated. Add to that the fact that every other feature of the game such as the arenas and the other band members, the hints on the load screens, are almost Identical to GH2, and I felt even more cheated. For Instance your chracter is dressed in clothes from the 80's but no one else is, they look exactly the same as GH2. Essentially this game is just what the name implies, an Encore, an add on, a continuation, and not worthy of the price tag assigned to it. Quite literally there was nothing new in this game except the 30 tracks from the 80's.
All in all I liked the game, and it's fun to play, but I felt cheated paying $50 for it. Had the game cost $30 to $35, This review would have been 4 or 5 stars, so I say, Wait. Let the price come down a little, and pick it up later. You won't be missing much.
Not worth the money...

After hearing about GH does the 80's I couldn't wait for it's release, but man what a letdown it was. Only 30 songs, some of which I have never heard of, for the same price as 40. Like others have said GH80's is easier than the other GH's. I even got 5 stars on a hard song (I've only barely made it through the hard songs on GH2) so it has to be less difficult. If I could do it again I wouldn't have spent 50 bucks on this lame excuse for a follow up. If they had priced it according to what you get it would be another story, but right now I'm feeling like I got screwed.

When this first came out, I almost bought it, but at the last second I changed my mind and rented it later. I'm glad I did.
This game is nothing but GH2 with 80's window dressing. I mean, the opening sequence is EXACTLY THE SAME, only the characters are now sporting 80's styles. As soon as I saw that, I got a bad feeling, and it only got worse from there. Everything--and I do mean EVERYTHING--is right out of GH2. I couldn't even make it through the first round before quitting in digust. This is nothing but pure laziness on the creators' part, just a desperate attempt to milk some more money out of this franchise.
Sound Quality?

The game is decent if not utterly predictable, and like most other reviewers, I wish there were more songs and more extras. Some of the choices are kind of questionable too...I guess I just don't think of A Flock of Seagulls or the Go-Go's when pondering 80's guitar greatness.
My main beef is with the sound quality. The bass is barely audible and there is no way to adjust it. I checked my audio system and played GH2 so I know the capacity for good sound is there (although GH2 is certainly no "Medal of Honor"), but it just seems like they did a terrible job with the audio mastering. Anyone else notice this?
