this game kinda stinks.you go talk to this old dude who gives you these long drawn out battle plans.then you watch these long drawn out cut scenes.then you go into these map/worlds.when you get near an enemy, you fight.well, sort of.the computer does everything.theres a lot of complicated planning involved.theres no clear cut way to figure out anything.its a real pain in the hiney.whats more is i dont belive i even saw any ogres.of course im only on like level 2 since the game is totaly screwed.i bought it used and the guy before me only got that far too.no wonder i got this so cheap.this game will use up all of your extra brain space.if you thought out how to beat it.you wouldnt have the brain sense left to eat cheerios.someone would have to run you an iv.youd almost have to be like freakin fixated on its ended.its totaly freakin ridiculous.and then ,as youre being slain by little people with sticks, even though youre sporting a dragon, you are helpless to defend yourself.it sucks.

I know that few people will even agree with me on this...

I think that this game is far too overrated. I was expecting an RPG, but what I got was a half-backward strategy. I can easily say this is the worse game for N64, rather out of all my gaming years, which is about 13.

This game did not cut it. RPG, role paying game. I expected a ton of dialogue, well written, with towns to enter and walk through, character development, etc. all the necessary components that classify games as RPG's.

This has none of that. There are no towns to mingle with the folks, lame character development, I began hating that characters, since I knew nothing about them! The music was less than par, the graphics I would let slide, except that there is so little holding the game together.

Battle...now that's another story. I've played strategy, this was designed simply for children, or beginner RPG'ers. The battle system is simplistic, there is no real innovation to it.

I cannot blame this much on Atlus, since the N64 cartridges have a limited amount of space, but still, I expected more.

Beginner RPG'ers will eat this up no doubt, but the more experienced gamers will not be impressed. I say rather that it is a gateway to great RPG's.

RPG! I don't think so!

I rented this game because I THOUGHT it was a RPG game. But as it turned out, this is pretty much a divide and conqer game. The characters have no backgrounds, no storline, and no places to explore like RPG.EVEN PAPER MARIO is better than this RPG.I EVEN RECOMMEND YOU BUY PAPER MARIO INSTEAD OF ORGE 64!The only thing that saved this game is of its graphics and nothing more.So unless you like cuoncqer games, I suggest you don't by this so called RPG game!

Not a game for children or younger teens.

This game was a real disappointment to me. The game contains a lot of profanity that frankly I would not like my children to learn. There is a warning on the box about mild language, however the language is worse than "mild" and it is used very frequently, within the first few minutes of game play on. The profanity is completely not needed and is way out of place in the game. Aside from this major complaint the game could be fun, though the game still remains somewhat tedious and dull.

Where do I begin...? In the beginning of this game it had so much potential. I was really thinking that since the graphics were pathetic that the story would have to go on forever, which I had no problem with, I LIKE long games. Then I came to a point where the screen slowly spelled out "Final Chapter". I freaked out initially because I thought this was the end, I spent ... for this wasted entertainment. Then I thought "hmm, maybe it is just the final chapter of the PREFACE", which would mean that the actual "ogre battle" has yet to begin (which would have been great), and the entire time I have been playing was designed to be the events that unfolded to ensure that I understood that the battle that will betaking place was a direct result of my failure to be everywhere at once. I thought maybe all that I have done was only done to ensure I understatnd the orgin of the real part of game once I got that far. I thought that at some point all of my "soldiers" and charecters (except the main ones) were going to become ogres and then the real fun could begin... Well, at least I was thinking. The ending came right after that chapter and I hated it. I felt like sueing the guys who programmed it, but couldn't because I didn't have a case. It was so irritating to come that far and just be let down like that. The most difficult obsticals in that game are learning to play it (translating the vauge instuction booklet), and the patience it takes to go everywhere nine times before giving up on little "side quest" (In my case I never use "stradegy guides" like nintendo power, so this alleged "bolt of silk" and that damn "annihilation" spell book will always be a mystery, along with about anything else that I haven't even heard of yet). I am currently working on my third time playing. So far the endings aren't much, there had better be about 60 of them or I will consider this a one star. Hmmm... Maybe I should have played the snes one, who knows, this is just my opinion.

OK, for an ogre battle

okay this is the first review i have written for amazon... i was motivated to write this because i was very disappointed in this game! it frustrated me so much because i LOVED the first ogre battle for SNES and also Tactics Ogre for playstation. i don't know what happened with this one, but the graphics in this one look worse to me than the SNES game! i think it's that all these games lately are trying to do only 3d polygon crap and all the beautiful hand drawn artwork is gone. the look of the recent square games like crono cross and FFIX is so beautiful, thats what other games should aspire to. anyway also the music in this game is the same as in the SNES game, arg! it's like torture, just hit mute and turn on your own cd's instead. okay the last major complaint i have is that even if you put in a battle strategy for your party they don't obey it! so what's the point. that's really annoying. i waited for this game to come out for a long time, and now i find myself going back and replaying Ogre Tactics instead.... well i hope Atlus puts out another one in this series but i hope it's better!

-i'm still giving it 3 stars because i like the ideas behind the game, it's just not executed well.

Okay game, but not great.

My friend bought Ogre Battle 64 a few months ago, and loved it. But as i was watching him play, i soon got bored as the units he controlled took days to move across the somewhat small maps. I, have no patience whatsoever, but my friend has enough to train mice to speak english. In other words, to like this game you must be able to stand waiting for a while to get into the action, which is quite fun. Another downside is the game's storyline, which is quite odd and hard to follow. I would definitely rent this game, but not buy it.

Ogre Battle series is the best!!!

Finally, another RPG on the N64, unfortunately games are scarce enough on the N64, RPG are even less, only a handful. Thanks to Atlus (who does a great translation job by the way) RPG gamers can cheer now!!! Ogre Battle started on the SNES, its a great strategy games involving organizing your troops, it is also considered an RPG because your characters level up, can change classes and gain special abilities. It is a very deep and involving game, finish it once can take up to 50 hours, depending on how thorough you are. Many secrets, characters, branching story and multiple ending, I played the original game over 5 times.

Ogre Battle 64 is the sixth chapter in the series, most of the music and sounds are the same, so fans of the first one would be happy. Story is also excellent, great plot but mostly involving war and revolution, although nothing special, but the characters really draws you in, You even encounter many familiar people you've met in the first game. Well, I liked most everything about this game, but the gameplay was a little different, the maps are small and really ugly, I guess to compensate for the tiny maps your troops moves extrememly slow. Liberating castles really doesn't do anything, at least in the first one you can draw tarot cards radomly, which can add to your stat, and you can also use as special items during battle. There is also this interrupt bar you have to wait until it fills to change the troop tactics, to retreat and to use your special magic...and battles are usually not long enough for the meter to fill up so you can use the magic. Lastly the classes are mostly the same, with a few additions, and also a few missing. Overall its a good game, should satisfy those N64 owners hunger for a good strategy game, its also a good distraction for those waiting for the next Zelda later this month. My recommendation is to pick one up and enjoy it! Score: 85/100.

King of Strat/RP Games

If you are thinking about buying this game, one thing you need to consider above all else. Ogre Battle series is 70% strategy and 30% Role Playing. With that in mind, here is my review...

Since this is a strategy game more than RP, I gave it 4 Stars for one reason alone. It is not as challenging as the first Ogre Battle (March of the Black Queen). Do not get me wrong, it can be challenging at times and even frustrating at times but the 1st OB was much harder. Example: the bosses in this game are far easier. The first OB for the SNES still stands out in my mind w/ bosses like the Gemini Twins, Diablo, etc.

Another thing to consider... if you are someone who HAS TO have complete control during a fight, than it is a good bet you will *not* enjoy this game. You are basically a general of a battilion giving orders and watching them carry out those orders. The best part of the game is designing your army. You can create a battle unit to emplore all your favorite classes (e.g. Princess which provides extra attack, Lich for brute dark magic, Dragoon for sheer strength, Paladin for his holy attacks, Black Knight for evil attacks, etc.) Combine these characters to make an army you want! And you have plenty of choices, I could waste a lot time just spewing all the characters in this game. You can pair up wizards to make spells combine for a different spell (e.g. Earth and Fire combine for Lava Shot) and more damage. That is the attraction and the strategy part.

The other attraction is the storyline, which is better than the 1st OB. It is not the best storyline across all games, but it is also modifable. Sometimes a small decision you make costs the life of someone dear. There are 3 MAIN endings to the game. There can be small differences in those endings depending on the storyline characters you recruit. This is what gives the game a replay value ...to try different routes in the game and see different endings and different story points and try for other storyline characters ...in my next game I am going for Biske (a werewolf boss).

There are A LOT of nuisances to this game. More than you can imagine. Stuff like removing a character from a unit will lower the morale of the unit ...but you can not see the morale of a unit (i.e. hidden from you). So, read the Internet, DO NOT buy the Prima Strategy Guide unless you really want it. It has some incorrect information and not enough of the good information. Visit OB64 websites, not prima guide! Personal websites, not business websites. I don't know if I can legally post mine here so I am not going to chance it. Also, read the manual and Hugo's Report (in the game). The game has a nice feature of letting you view past movies and good advice - take advantage of that.

It is a GREAT game, but mostly for people who love strategy games like Romance of the III Kingdoms and even RP gamers. I play all types (action, racing, rpg, strategy, fighting), but I will say this... I enjoy strategy and RP games more than fighting (got silly after the 2nd Street Fighter). Someone who loves 1st person shooters and fighting games above all else may be irritated more than enthralled. Then again I probably couldn't count all the hours I have wasted playing Bond in the dorm rooms!

Your decision, not mine but I provided my inputs ...make up your own mind.
