What is Wrong with People These Days???

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

Let me start off by saying I cried at this game. Yes, I did. The game totally immersed me into the planet Hyllis, engrossed me into the characters and their relationships, and captivated me into the story line.
The gameplay mixes stealth, action, and puzzle (even some driving!!) into one awesome game about how the government lies to you about an alien invasion. The supposed "helpers" are called Alpha Sections and are really importing human bodies to the alien's planet to produce monsters. Armed with your camera, and stick, and one of two sidekicks, you seek out the government's lies.
The title of my review goes to almost all you gamers out there. Why did True Crime sell the same time BG&E was out?? Tons of bad games over the holiday season (when this was released), and very few good games, and this is what happens? Please.
The graphics are pretty good, not the best, and all the elements of the game fit together perfectly. Get ready for a cinema-worthy action/adventure game. The ending is so sad, even though there are no words, it speaks for itself.

Cool engaging game

This game really engages you and has an "Aliens" like story line. The graphics are sweet and loads of adventures to go on. It ended too soon!! Loved playing it.

A wonderful, involving game!

This game is just a wonderful little gem on so many levels. The background music is great. The voice acting? Wonderful (not something you can say about many games!). The story is good, and the puzzles, while sometimes tough, are usually not too insurmountable.

My favorite part was that you could take pictures of the animals around for money. How many games have you played where you actually cared about the scenery?

Also, appropriately enough, it has an international flavor, and you can select the subtitles before the game begins... a great overlooked benefit to hard of hearing gamers.

Fantastic, beautiful game!

I highly recommend this game. The graphics are terrific, not only in the cutscenes but throughout the whole game. Real voices are used about 80% of the time and the voice actors are terrific and lend drama to the story. (The rest of the time you read brief text when you talk to another character). The story is very interesting and occasionally quite moving. As Jade the spy/reporter, you sneak around taking incriminating photos to help expose a horrible plot taking place on your planet. The sneaking parts get really tense sometimes! The gameplay has a good amount of variety: spying & exploring, races, fights, puzzles, photographing things, and two different vehicles - a hovercraft and a spaceship.

There are objects to find and money to acquire for personal & vehicle upgrades. The maps are pretty good and you can buy items to help you locate pearls (one of the currencies in the game) and animals (you take photos of them and the Science Center gives you $$$). You have two companions in the game who help you solve puzzles or achieve things you couldn't do alone. The music is good and the worlds are big and beautiful - you can go everywhere and explore.

I picked it up used for $8 - what a deal! I'd really recommend this to anyone, especially someone who liked titles such as Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Prince of Persia, the Hobbit, Ico, even Zelda (which I did not like because the maps were so confusing). This game is challenging but almost never frustrating. Parents - there is no cussing, no sexual references, no drugs, smoking and only mild violence (fighting aliens & armed men in spacesuits) - no blood or gore at all. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! There are one or two scenes of a person being tortured (both the people are in a giant tube filled with "alien rays" - no blood, machinery, etc.) In one scene a main character lays dead but later is brought back to life. Children are attacked by aliens and later kidnapped by them. Humans are kidnapped by aliens and turned into food a la "Soylent Green" and then eaten by other unwitting humans (not on screen). The heroes set out to rescue them and save the planet.

A Great Game!!!

This game is really really good.

-Unique gameplay
-Enthralling storyline
-Interesting and realistic characters
-Beautiful Graphics
-GREAT MUSIC!!!

Too bad it still hasn't gotten get very much attention (Something it really deserves).
BUY THIS GAME NOW!!!
It is definitely worth more than Budokai 2 or any other overly-hyped game (Beyond Good and Evil is not overly-hyped in case you were wondering), and it's less than half the price. Although it may not be the right style of game for everyone, at only 19.95 what have you got to lose?

Great fun, great adventure.

Its been noted by other reviewers that "Beyond Good and Evil" has received hardly any publicity, and I agree that this is a real shame, as this is a hugely enjoyable game. Playing as Jade, you are an ordinary person living in a kind of floating futuristic city who finds herself wrapped up in an attempt to liberate the planet from the oppressive regime that controls it. Advance publicity billed this as some kind of stealth/photography game, but its actually far more than that, more like a cross between Tomb Raider and Ratchet and Clank...and its definitely more fun that Tomb Raider. Gameplay involves exploring caves and ruins, where you will engage in combat with various monsters whilst also solving puzzles to progress further. Both elements here are cleverly and well implemented into the game. Then there are sections where you have to infiltrate the enemy strongholds to photograph their dark secrets and its here that the stealth aspect is employed, which the game pulls off very successfully. Still more variety is provided by a hovercraft which is Jade's means of transport between the various explorable areas, and along with combat with flying ships and monsters whilst in motion, there are also high speed chases plus optional races to be tackled. There is so much variety in the game, such as mini-games held in the city bar, and a side mission to photograph rare and elusive animals that are scattered throughout the world, and although it's not difficult, some of the puzzle solutions are quite ingenious and will tax your brain. There's even an upgrade from hovercraft to flying spaceship in the final stages of the game, which make for some great flying manouveres, not to mention a beautiful view of the planets surface from above as you glide over it. In fact the look of the game is one of it's most outstanding accomplishments. The towns are surrounded by realistic rippling waters, and the characters all look convincing, especially Jade herself, who is a detailed and interesting lead protagonist who displays convincing emotions. There's also a lot of humour in the game, excellently portrayed by the many voices and mannersisms of all the characters.
All in all, this is a pleasant surprise and a joy to play. My only gripe is that it is too short, but then that only means I was sorry when it ended! Pick up a copy and see how many novel and original touches a good game can inject into a over-populated genre.

Best Playstation 2 game EVER!

I'm a gamer, but I'm not typically into platformers. I usually find them a bit too junior for me. But when I heard about this on G4 listed as the most underrated game on ps2, I had to go out and buy it. I paid $20 for it brand new, and I feel like it would have been a bargain at twice the price! As a photographer, the gameplay is close to my heart. I love the music, the characters, the storyline (a timely storyline at that.) and the characters are awesome! The Rhino brothers at Mamago garage are fantastic!
The world is a great blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and elements that are somehow familiar and comfortable like a worn in pair of jeans. Which makes you want to fight even harder to protect it! Pick it up if you're on the fence about it. Do it... you won't regret it!

Its fandarntastic!

I'm just going to chime in with all these other folks and say yes, this is a fantastic game. Especially for chixx who might not normally get into other games. Great graphics, terrrific story, excellent controls, and well matched battles. Terrific game. I borrowed mine from a friend and now I have to have my own. When I showed another friend she said to me...."so how much do these playstation things cost?". Heheh.

Nice way to pass the time

This game is an action rpg type of game. The controls are fairly simple, and so is the combat. You can do a super charge attack, and you can whack the enemies. There aren't any cool spells or summons or things like that, and you can't use much technique in battles. Still, it's not boring and it's easy.
The characters are alright. They are not too annoying and I actually liked some of them. You can't skip the cutscenes, so if you have to start over, it is irritating.
My game messed up three times throughout the whole game. It's not that much, but none of my other PS2 games messed up, so maybe it says something about the quality. I had to start over and watch some fairly long cutscenes again.
The music is good. None of it grated on my nerves, and it went well with the situations. You get to take photos of different animals to earn money, which is fun and useful. There are a few minigames to earn money and pearls, too. Pearls are used to buy parts for your hovercraft. Driving the hovercraft is fun and easy. The water scenes are beautiful, and there are dolphin- and whale-like creatures that jump out.
Graphics are are good, but not great like in Resident Evil 4 or in Final Fantasy X-2's cutscenes. The length was in the middle. It took me about a week to beat it with playing a few hours a day. There isn't much replay value, so I recommend renting this game. It's not an awesome game, so it isn't really a game I care about owing. But it doesn't cost too much if you do buy it. Overall, this game is above average. It was fun but I wasn't left wanting a sequel.

Enjoyable, but hardly the best

I enjoy RPGs quite a bit and was especially excited to catch up on Beyond Good and Evil this summer. However, I found the game to be pretty tedious with missions that were often repetitive and boring. The puzzles aren't that difficult, but sneaking behind guard after guard to push a button or crawl through a door gets pretty lame after the first couple of hours.

The story is quite redeeming, however. There is an interesting plot to follow and the photo-journalism aspect of the game is interesting. As Jade, you play a free-lance photographer employed by an underground rebel alliance hired to uncover a conspiracy involving the Alpha Sector (the supposed protectors of your world) and the enemy DomZ who are attacking your home. Throughout your journey to uncover the truth, you try to capture the images of as many critters and creatures as you can to keep your wallet (actually, a debit card) full of money. The sub-games carry well and keep you interested in the game when sneaking and maneuvering just gets too boring.

Overall, I recommend playing the game for the story (since it is under $10), but I have issues with the redundancy of the gameplay.
