Possibly the best CRPG ever

This game is simply brilliant. It is better than Fallout 1 in many ways. Firstly, it is less linear (if that is even possible)! Your actions during the game cause the endings to differ. You can do whatever you like in whatever order you please, and there is no longer a time limit (150 days). Yes, the game is a little harder than the first Fallout, but that is a good thing -- The first one was a little on the easy side. I cannot even put how good this game is into words. I 100% guarantee that you will love this game if you have even the slightest desire to play a post-apoc turn-based RPG. It is simply the best one in existence.

Fallout 2

By the time the Fallout games were released for the Mac, they were both dated in terms of graphics and overall game technology. What ISN'T dated about these games is the interesting storyline, the humor, the characters, and the world of Fallout itself, which is unique.

Fallout 2 does not improve on graphics, and it is essentially the same game as its predecessor. However, Fallout 2 expands on the first: it increases the amount of items a player comes across in the game, streamlines the controls a bit, and expands the world itself several times over making it absolutely huge in comparison. For instance, the amount you can barter with is no longer 3 digits but 4, making transfer of funds a lot quicker. Also, pilfering lockers and scavenging goods from bodies is made quicker with the addition of the "Take All" button. And NPC's are much easier to control with the ability to outfit them with specific wepons, set parameters for how they behave in battle (like, to not use burst), and you can tell them to stay behind in a place til you get back.

Some people find Fallout 2 more difficult than the first but I think that's relative. The beginning is more difficult than any part of either of the Fallout games, but once you start building up money and experience, by the time you get halfway into the game, fights are pretty easy for the most part. And I am not much of a gamer - the Fallout games are two of the only games I own for the Mac other than the Myst games.

There are a lot of new things in the game that make it more interesting than the first as well - I don't want to spoil anything, but I think fans of Fallout 1 will enjoy these additions quite a lot. Personally, going back to the first game left me longing for the additions in the second - not to mention the improvements on menus, etc - and I missed the expanded variety of items and weapons, and the increased difference on personal interactions depending on which gender your character is.

No matter how old they become, the Fallout games are solid and unique RPG's. If you've never played either, I reccomend getting the first due to it being a little less daunting to begin and because it provides the back story to the second. And if you liked the first, you'll love the second.

Finest game yet written...

Probably the finest game yet written: unparalleled in breadth, depth, humour and intelligence. Fresh (and surprising) every time you play. "Slight pixellation" hard to notice when you've been playing the game for 48 hours straight: it's a text adventure with a front end anyway. Beg, borrow, steal. Shame fallout tactics is so much less fun.

Just thought I would let folks know that it is available (as of this date) at MacPlay for $1.88. But be aware of the high shipping cost.

this game dos not run properly on os x 10.5.3 or later. video drivers are messed up so unless u like playing in half a screen and can deal with what could best be described as really low resolution predator heat vision i would pass on this one. besides fallout 3 will be out in a few months

Just a little late

This is the only game I've ever purchased for PC, and even though it's been almost four years since this game was released for PC, I'm glad it's finally been ported to Mac. My rating is based on how the game is, not on how fast the port is, but judging by MacPlay's other ports, I would assume this is fairly fast and not too buggy.

An excellent game, and I recommend Fallout also, ...(which was released for Mac about the time it was released for PC) seems to not carry it. Fallout 2 is far longer than the first game, though.

Okay game, but bad graphics

If this game had been released for the Mac 2 - 3 years ago then I might be in a position to recommend it. I think the game is terribly dated in terms of looks and game play. As far as a RPG it is pretty good, there is lots of story and character development and the turn based attack system works well. However that doesn't make up for its shortcomings. My biggest complaints are the graphics and the interface. On my computer (G4 533 w/GeForce2 MX card) the graphics are very grainy and pixilated. This may not bother some people, but to me it made game play very unpleasant. The interface makes it hard to move your character and interact with the environment, such as picking up objects. I wanted to like this game because the original was a trendsetter, but I feel that this release is too dated given the quality of games available now.

There are similar games for the Mac that are much better.

Its graphics and sound are lackluster. Its manual is overly long and poorly written. The gameplay is far from fun or enjoyable. I would have to guess that those who really liked this game have not played other truly good games on the Macintosh. There are plenty of other similar games for the Mac that are much better than this one. I got it on sale for only $4, yet consider it a regrettable waste of money.

Very Difficult, Too Linear

I loved Fallout. Once armed and with even leather armor you could strike out in any direction in search of adventure. There was a storyline, but it was still possible to get a job or gamble your way through for a good while, building up experience in the process. Fallout 2, on the other hand, is very difficult. Creatures are so tough at first that survival becomes a challenge unto itself. Guns or body armor would be helpful, but there are none to be found. The storyline, and character survival, are so intertwined that striking off in any direction, alone, is certain death. Experience points come very, very slowly. Crippling injuries are common. Because it's part of the Fallout genre I give it 2 stars, but it really deserves only one star.
