for some reason the creators of the game decided to follow a completely differant storyline than the movie, so i dont know why its called the official game.
this game is highly addictive but one downside is, kong suck. i know, i know how could i say kong sucks, its not him its the way the gamemakers made his controls and graphics, thats why he sucks.
all in all, great game, but dread becoming kong.
Despite All Its Reported Problems I Gave It A Try...

I found a copy of this game at a brick & mortal store going for $10 and since I have a spare computer system which I could install and play it on without having to worry about the "StarForce" malware, I gave this game a try. Given all the negative feedback of the past year, and UBISOFT's agreeing not to use the 'StarForce' malware copy protection sceme going forward, I was surprised that they still haven't released a patch to resolve the problem for this game. In fact it looks like UBISOFT has abandonned any ongoing support of this game.
As for game play? It sucks. Not only are the graphics cutting edge for the end of the 20th century, the game play is very linear and if that weren't bad enough other characters in the game are constantly telling you what to do anyhow. Further, appearing as a 1st person shooter, the game has some sections that can only be completed as 3rd person and parts of the game have continuous strobing type flashes which aren't safe for some people with seizure disorders.
I was originally interested in this game because of UBISOFT's FarCry release. But after dealing with this game, it's clear that CryTek is soley responcible for FarCry's excellence. Hopefully, CryTek will find a new distributor for their 'Crysis' upcoming release...

There's actually not much of a game in this one. It's basically a play-through-story in a lot of cases, and the entire game feels like it's on a rail. This is especially true of the kong levels..which are pretty much just narrow lanes to jump through with a small boss arena at the end.
This almost gives the game an arcade feeling--with the camera scripted to react differently almost every single second of a kong level.
The Jack levels are a lot better, and in most cases are actually fun. The game is still linear, but the game does fall back on open-spaces-then-chokepoint-then-another-openspace design principles, which can get old.
Still, there's a real nice beauty about kong. If you've seen the movie, you know how 'moody' Jackson strove to make Skull island--the gray wall, the dense jungle, the thick swarms of insects--it all translates VERY well. Constant rainstorms, the roll of thunder, the maze of corridors atop the wall, the alley of dinosaurs to dodge and run through, the bleak, dense, and dangerous swamps...though it's a linear ride, it's a very very pretty one--worth the budget price even in my opinion.
Great achievement, deeply flawed

I am here to blow off a little steam. I should say that during most of this game I really enjoyed it, even though it's very linear/scripted, and the limited difficulty is almost entirely artificial. This game doesn't excel as an action title - it doesn't have the physics, speed or responsive controls for that. And as an adventure game it really just presents the same easy puzzles over and over again. However, it is really is groundbreaking as an interactive, cinematic experience. The game is rich with atmosphere and free of conventional video game HUD elements, and the little vignettes that comprise the story are enough to keep you engaged. Hence the generous overall rating. If you'd asked me yesterday, I might have rated the game 4 stars of "fun" rather than 2.
So today I come to the bad news - some dramatic battle between Kong and... well I won't spoil it... big enemies. Which do you hate more, your mouse, or the tendons in your wrists? Either way you're in store for a treat. Controlling Kong in battle essentially amounts to the worst button mash I've ever seen in PC gaming - and maybe the least fun I've ever had. This scheme might work with an XBox or PS2 controller, but with a mouse button - and especially the mouse WHEEL button, it's weird, ineffective, and no fun. Also, for whatever reason (for me, did I miss something huge in the instruction manual?) impossible.
So I'll be uninstalling this game, trying not to think about any additional pretty content I've missed, and putting ice on my wrist. I've already ordered a new mouse.
Thanks for the alert about Starforce on this game!

I appreciate everyone letting the public know this game installs Starforce on your PC. I'm sure not everyone is experiencing the problems some have reported with this - that it slows down your drive speed when attempting to burn a CD/DVD, or possibly leaves you vulnerable to a virus or trojan that knows how to exploit the installation of this driver.
However, there ARE a couple of things that may potentially affect everyone. First, uninstalling the game will NOT uninstall Starforce. Second, and most importantly, it has been discovered that Starforce is NOT compatible with Windows Vista. So if you upgrade your PC with Microsoft's new operating system coming early 2007, you will no longer be able to play this game! That alone is enough to make me never buy this in its current state.
There is also a high resolution version of this game available only by download. I considered purchasing that one, then discovered that even gamers with high-end computers are reporting it to be very slow and buggy on their machines. Even more disappointing is how the high resolution version doesn't even support SLI! (Talk about lazy code writing.)
Man - I would LOVE to play this game, but even the DEMO installs Starforce! Come on, Ubisoft. Release a patch that fixes these issues with either the retail version or the high resolution version so I can gladly give you my money. Until then, I'll have to join in with the boycott.
This game was disappointing

This game was disappointing in one way only and that is that I wasn't able to install it as I like which is as a part of my portable cd library on my notebook. I can't carry around hundreds of cds and I won't. I buy lots of games and it is strange that some companies have a mental problem with understanding selling, buying, and ownership. I personally won't be purchasing any UBIsoft games that include Starforce protection in the future. It isn't because it messes up my computer. I didn't notice anything but when a company offers no alternative but having a cd in the drive it really makes my life more difficult and I just don't have time for the 1% of companies who don't respect their customers enough to offer them a reasonable alternative to draconian drm. IDSoftware has never seen the need to use this approach and I suppose that is how one differentiates a high roller from a wanta-be. There is one simple fact, you make good games and give consumers what they desire and they reward you. We wouldn't purchase anything at Wal-Mart if they slapped handcuffs on you at the door as a precaution to prevent theft and it should be seen as no different with the media and software vendors. It is insulting and it is not becoming. I doubt they can prove it pays off because if anything it guarantees their mediocre game will face the trash bin and the discount rack.
The game was nice for the few minutes I bothered playing it then I removed the cd and put it back in its box and played Quake 4 from my cd library using my virtual drive and just haven't felt the need to bother loading up the game built by control freaks again.
Game is unique and fun.

First of all, please disregard any review that complains about Starforce. It has no bearing on the game. If you even halfway maintain your computer Starforce will not be an issue. I have 6 Ubisoft games installed that have Starforce and I have never had one crash, or any problems using my DVD-RW. Now on to the game.
This game takes some getting used to at first due to some of the controls-mainly using space to arm your weapon. I like this feature though because I feel like I'm not playing your average run of the mill FPS. The graphics are good, the sound is well done, and the story sticks pretty close to the movie. I haven't reached the part where I get to play as Kong, but the game so far has been fun. If you are looking for something fun that is somewhat different then try this game.
pretty good but watch out

First of all, I wouldnt be so concerned about the starforce drivers. There are programs out there that allow you to disable it or remove it from your system. Just be careful to get it from somewhere reputable so as not to put something unknown on your computer. Actually, I have this game and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on here and have no starforce drivers at this time. (I went to disable them in my comp management and no starforce present and starforce detection tools did not find it). Boycott if you wish and I understand the motive, but will take my chances as I have never had a problem with it. So enough about that.
Now, the important stuff, onto the game. Had some headaches getting it to play properly. Had to unplug joypad, disable that device, and then have to disable one of my cores on amd processor in order to get it to run properly. I have a new computer and had to turn the graphics down on this one to get it to run smoothly while I can play about every other game I own maxed out or near maxed out.
Pros: The graphics are nice on the enemies. The T-rex especially looks awesome and really freaked me out running whilst confronting it. Game saves often, so if you die, you dont have to go back much.
Cons: The viewable area seems decreased from the normal. Kind of like you are running around zoomed in at 1.5x all the time. I prefer blasting my way thru games, and you are always running around with very little, if any, ammo. Fortunately there are an abundance of spears and poking devices around to use. Gameplay is very linear. The graphics on everything but the enemies are not good. It is hard to look around and to navigate, and the sensitivity of the mouse seems to go crazy on me where it is fast then slow (might be my mouse going nuts)
Summary: I would have told you to never buy this game before I got chased by the T-rex and it changed my story. Buy it if you can get a good price on it and enjoy it for what it is. Linear gameplay loosely following the movie. I have been very impressed with every ubisoft game I have played up until this one. Not terrible, but could have been much much better.
So far So Good-It pays to keep an old CD-R Drive

Just got this at Wal Mart for 20 bucks, i'm guessing the price drop from 40 to 20 was because of lack of sales and all the "issues" people have had, which i totally do believe. In buying the game i finally though hmm i'll just hook up the old external CD-R drive to my laptop(which has a DVD-Burner) so that i won't take any risks of @%#ing it up. Well happily i was right the old external CD-burner worked fine, installed the game with no problem. Once the game is installed its pretty awesome, even though i just started AND just rented the movie i kinda get the jist of where the game is going. I have a Qosmio Toshiba Laptop with a Geforce Go 6600FX and even on high resolution plays smooth as silk, and so far looks good. I'll keep updating if i run into any problems, but as it stand now this looks to be quite a good adventure game. Note-Go to walmart to get your games, i got 3 for 65 bucks, this one, Serious Sam 2, and Stubbs the Zombie(which i don't like), great deal. Also as long as it "looks" sealed they will take it right back. hehe I really think they should be WAY more leanient on PC games anyways. So get ya an old external burner from someone to play KK on, if not i wouldnt risk it on your DVD-R-RW.
