Well, going into it, I heard that this was SO much better than Quake III arena. I had played that game, and I liked it. So, I gave Unreal a go. After playing for a while, I played Quake III again. Within a few minutes, I quit Quake, uninstalled Unreal, and went back to playing Quake. The difference in the graphics was incredable. All the sharp edges are fine, but I perfer the revolutionaly rounded surfaces. Quake III blew Unreal out of the water graphically. What about the game play? Well, I was kidna dissapointed. Quake III is very intense, the kind of game you get caught up in. I found myself playing Unreal, just to see what it was like. It had no draw whatsoever. I thought the weapons were fairly difficult to use, and were kinda cheesy. For me, it is all Quake III.

This has to be the most detailed and beautifully rendered game ever made. The monsters look real, the weapons look sleek, and the animation is very realistic, with no jerkiness. Unfortunately, this game requires totally unreal system requirements! Anything less than a PentiumII/300MHz processor runs like garbage unless everything is turned down, and, well, there goes the graphics! This game was the chief reason for my system being upgraded! Also, remember the sleek weapons I described? Well, they're sleek, but that's it. For crying out loud, it takes THREE HITS with a ROCKET LAUNCHER to kill one of the BASIC enemies (the Skaarj). There's no bang to them at all! Plus, another good thing about Unreal is the multiplayer games where you can play against computer-controlled opponents (bots). Sounds good, right? Wrong. Unless you put the skill level down nearly all the way, simply aiming a gun at the bot will cause it to zig-zag in a way that is impossible to hit, all while shooting at you with godlike aim! Other than the steep system requirements, the difficulty of the bots, and the bangless weapons, the game is very good and highly customizable for all those hackers and map makers out there. You'll get your money's worth, but I hope you're good at strafing while shooting, otherwise you'll NEVER win!

Unreal is Unreal

I recently purchased Unreal for 15 bucks. When I first got it, the game play was dissapointing due to my lack of a good video card, but after installing a Voodoo 3 3000, it plays wonderfully. The graphics are superb, the enemies are wickedly smart, and the online playing is great! It took me 2 months to beat this game on medium, and I've just started on the Unreal setting, which seems to be impossible. Luckily there are commands and cheats aplenty to help you along. Overall, this is an excellent game, and a real steal. If you're looking for a good FPS, dont pass up Unreal. One shortcoming though....the ending is kind of lame.

Well, that's what CGW editor Jeff Green called "Unreal". After playing it, I'm inclined to agree. It incorporates (on a small scale) elements of adventure games, which slows down the first-person action without actually adding much weight to the alleged story. It does look nice, though, at least for a 1997 era game.

It's call unreal because it is.

UNREAL is a really good game some people are saying do not play this game or don't go near it. Well all you really need is to have a good computer with all the requ it say to have. With good music and very good storyline too. The people are a little pit bright but don't let that scare you. In one level all the lights will go out and you will near a very scary sound like something is right behind your back! It is different than Quake 2 a little, if you play quake 2 and play unreal you will know the differents. Overall UNREAL is a game that you don't want to levae, find how you got on that planet and slove how and way. And also if you have a 3D-card you are lucky to have this game.

Do you remember how DOOM had you sitting up all night just to see what was round the next corner ?? Also, that ghostly soundtrack and the eerie lighting ? Then we had Quake, with it's dirty brown palette and Nine inch nails soundtrack. Nearly lost my job over that one - EXCELLENT !!

Then we all ran out and bought Unreal ?? Hmmmm, I found myself aping out of this one after 20 minutes...... Just didn't have that addictiveness to it. From a gameplay standpoint though, the AI in the monsters is top notch (Try the Difficult setting). On a VOODOO board the graphics are just excellent. But, it just doesn't have atmosphere.......

It's a nice try at a very "hit or miss" market but, this one missed more than it hit for me.

Until now. In 1998, Unreal was absolutely a beatiful masterpeice to behold, that made me drool so badly it made my drool like hoemr simpson at an all you can eat BBQ restraunt, and made R.I.P Quake II to Unreal, it was a graphical god, making incredible splendid use of lens flares and colors with true support from MMX and 3Dnow! intructions supporting processors. Making the best use of Voodoo class 3-D grafic accelerator boards with 3DFX, tagged along with impressive and well designed A.I with an innovative storyline and immerse game-play with well animated environments and realistic environmental reverb and spatial and background 16-bit quailty sound effects with support from A3D sound boards with awesome techno audio and 24-bit color support from grafics cards and upport from Windows 95 to Windows NT platform with both great single player and good multiplayer modes, software rendering support, brilliant character developement, and a variety of nicely paired preferences and designed menus, and more, unreal was the ultimate technological game with great game-play, making John Carmack's Quake II look like nothing. Yet by today's standards, unreal is nothing but a cheesey cheap low system requirements oldskool 3-D game. You'll only be able to find it in bargain bins, unfortunately. Back in 1998, it had an incredible new platform engine for amazing technological achievement. Also including a friendly easy to use fully supported unofficial level and mod editor and creator tool, unreal was not game to get bored of easily. Unless you had a top of the line or near 1998 system, you woudn't get the incredible experience out of unreal that the masters at epic and digital extremes designed unreal to originally specifically offer. I just picked up a copy of unreal, and was not impressed. I spent almost 10 minutes on the game with highest settings with my new Alienware with the latest P4 processor with Windows XP. Sure it looked decent and ran great, but then again, it was not a good experience. Too bad there wasn't a time machine, so I can see what unreal was all legendary and about back then. But that isn't possible, so I'll pass on unreal.

I played unreal when I was 9 and beat it in a week.
The game is just plain awsome. Unfortenutly that was 7 years ago and I doubt this will work on XP but when Im at his house I always play this amazing game. The begining is friggin scary when youre in the abandon space ship and all you hear are the lives of the sapce crew screaming and beging for there lives.
Later you soon find out that they are being torn apart by these disturbing creatures or aliens I might say. More games should be like this.
The only game to be like this would probably be The suffering cause you here the voices of the CO's getting torn apart by weird disturbing creatures. Maybe not the only game but there a little few games that are like UNreal.
The begining parts were the best for me. The scream the horror. I think this is suppose to be a survival horror game. I donno but Get this game but I think they dont make this game any more? Any ways get this and UNREAL TURNEMENT. AWSOME GAMES!

It's a good game, that I'm sure everyone can and will injoy!

It's one of those games that get's you thinking. You deffinitly won't beat it right away, so it will last long. It's fun for all ages! Enjoy!
