You gotta get this game!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 20 / 20

This game is it! If you have ever wanted to be on a S.W.A.T. team without the boot camp work this game is for you. First you must carefully pick you team, weapons for your team, armor for your team, and much more. Then you must plan your mission strategy. Then you execute the mission. Now this game is so reaistic because if you get hit in the head your dead and if you get hit somewhere else you probably won't survive more than 2 shots unlike other games where you can just walk around getting shot and not die for a while. And that's why planning your strategy is so improtant. Also once your freind dies hes dead the whole game. So get the game cause if you don't you are missing out on far to much fun.

Needs hardware, but rules supreme.

Rainbow Six is loosely based around the Tom Clancy novel with the same name. In the game, you lead a team of elite counter terrorism troopers to take down "tangos" or terrorists in a variety of locations.

Pros: Comprehensive and fully realized, the presentation is close to flawless. The game allows you to pick team members, their gear, their strategy and combat plans, and then lets you lead them into combat. An excellent idea, and the strategy parts of the game can take an our to plan out before you even enter the mission. The missions can be very hard, just because one hit kills. If you get hit at close range, your guy is dead for the rest of the campaign. Thus you must move silently and stealthily to take out terrorists before they see you, or it's gonna be a can-you-shoot-faster-and-better-than-him contest. And one error and it's game over.

Cons: Graphics are not very spectacular unless you have a serious processer (ie, Pentium II, above 233 mhz) and some serious 3D hardware (OpenGL, Voodoo II, ATI RAGE, etc). Otherwise, get ready to groan as your spiffy Pentium 366 is only able to run R6 in 320x240 resolution which doesn't look great. Also, your team of crack commandos seem brainless as they run around in circles getting shot, just because they don't understand the concept of backing you up. And you can't peek around corners, so one hit kills can become very adrenaline pumping.

Overall: A very solid buy. If you don't mind bad graphics, I'd seriously fork out the cash for the CPU and 3D gear. multiplayer can be a blast to play, single-player will keep you interested for a very long time, and the game just rocks. It may not seem impressive in this review, but the basic gameplay works fine and remains being insanely fun. Buy it.

Rainbow Six: What I think of it.

One day my friend brought the demo over, and we started playing it. Within 5 mins, I knew what game I wanted to get next. The day I got the game, I didn't stop playing it for a few months. Online gaming is fun, the single player missions are great, and the terrorists aren't stupid. They know when you are around for them. I highly recommend this game!

Yard Sale Deal

I picked this up at a yard sale along with the expansion pack (eagle watch) and the hint book. All 3 items are now bundled as a "gold edition". While it is a few years old, I was quickly amazed by how the real the scenarios were set up. The game itself plays like Thief, that is, hiding and sneaking and taking your shots when you can. If you are used to playing Doom/Quake/Unreal style of combat games and want fast and furios non-stop blowup action this game is not for you. You may have to sit and wait a minute or two for a guard to complete his patrol to line up a shot 50 yards away, only to miss him by inches. The overall graphics and sound are good for the date of this game. There isn't any theme music or background music. If you are near the ocean, that's what you hear... the waves. If you are in a dam, you will hear the deafening turbines spinning, and not the guard sneaking up on you from behind. Well thought out and well executed. As I write this, Rainbow Six 3 has been released and I am looking forward to Rogue Spear and other missions. My only serious complaint of this game is that, on occasion, the A.I. will do some strange things with the targets (like run into a corner and stand silently, instead of fleeing or firing back) Also, from time to time should you fail to meet and objective the mission will end suddenly and you may not understand why you failed the mission. The game simply will inform you that you did not complete a given task. (frusturating)

This game is awesome!

I don't know what the other guy is on. This game is sweet and so are the graphics. By the way, It's not one-hit-kills, b/c you have armor. This is both a stragedy game and a doom-type game in one. I thought the only bad thing about this game is the other people. They sometimes get stuck and stuff but you can swap your controller guy to the leader of that group to solve the disputes. Other than that, they're not bad (I could take 'em). Have fun!

This has to be the second best PC game out there. First being Rainbow Six two Rogue Spear. But thats a whole other review. If you are like me you are completly sick of stupid fist person shooters like Doom with stupid fake guns and so unrealistic where you can run into a room with guns blazin and kill 67 people and get hit like 30 times and not die. I think that is lame and takes no skill what so ever. Well you are in for a treat with the Rainbow Six series. In R6 you have to carfully pick your team of specailsts and give them their state of the art new real wepons. You have to pick the right wepon for the right job. Like if you need stealth then you would pick a silenced mp5 9mm. Then you plan your way through the blueprints of the compound and get ready to take down some terrorists. You are goin to have to forget all the things you have learned in Doom. In R6 you have to take down the terrorists one by one and try not to attract attention so they kill hostages or send 5 people after you. And trust me, when 5 fanatical terrorists are rushing toward you with their AK-47s shooting in all directions your team will go down. And if you get hit in the arm, your aim is horrible. If you get hit in the leg, you are as slow as a old snail. And if you get hit in the chest or the head, mmm lets just say you wont have to worrie about aiming or moving. Those are some of the reasons why you have to run out today and get Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear TODAY!

Rainbow Six is a great game because you get to run around killing terrorists which is a cool thing for the problemes we are going though now i think that using M-16's and other guns in about a 10 level game is pretty cool don't ya think. Also it is not easy. you can play with a second player and you can go through a training camp where the computer theaches you how to play. this is one of the greatest games for the computer ever. i reccomened this to all action and shooting game lovers

Short but sweet

OK, most people probably wont take me seriously, when I say: THIS GAME WAS TOO SHORT. Well trust me, when you get this game, you will see what I mean. Although the AI isn't the best, this game presents a great challenge. As you work your way through the missions, you will get caught up in the complex story line, full of twists. This game gets your adrenaline flowing. Choose your anti-terrorist team from a list of experts, your weapons, your gear, and make a plan. You can send one team of your strike force around the back of a building while you storm the front, or do any number of other plans. This game was EXCELLENT. While it is a great game though, I can't give it five stars, because the AI has room for improvement, and because it is too short.

allows both the active participation or a global command position...great missions... realistic... absobing and engaging....

When the game Rainbow Six came out, it was praised for being so revolutionary, realistic, and grondbreaking. Unfortunetly, not only were these claims exaggerated, but the game does not look nearly as good now as it did in 1997.

Frankly, the graphics weren't terribly good in 1997 either. Games like Half-Life and Total Annihilation were coming out at the same time, and they still look great today. Moreover, there never was much semblance of a plot, and the AI (both friendly and enemy) is abyssmal.
However, the game is still enjoyable, the levels still unique and well-designed, the weapons (although with the notable exception of the shotgun they all function essentially the same way) fun to use.
Although the original rainbow six pales in comparison to essentially every game that has followed it, it isnt a bad thng to pick up in a bargain bin for some quick entertainment. 5/10
