Diablo 2 is, quite simply, one of the greatest games ever made. Four years after its release the entire package (graphics, music, gameplay... etc) still holds up beautifully and it remains the pinnacle of the hack-n-slash/rpg hybrid genre.
To this day I continue to get the "D2 bug" every now and then and I just have to install the game and play it! I also recently picked up this "battle chest" as a gift for a friend and I can guarentee you that you're getting an excellent value for your money! (All 3 official Diablo games and the strategy guide!)
I recommend this without reservation!

This is one of those games where you can play for days straight and never get enough. Soon as you start playing, you get sucked up and you won't even realize that time is flying by, cause it is that much fun....
Although the battle.net has too many botusers nowaday that you feel left playing by your own hands, but you should know that if the game isn't fun there would be no bot users.
The main reason they use bot is to get stronger or to make money, and if the game is no fun and unpopular either won't work. What's the point of getting stronger if you hate the game?
Anyway, this is another legendary game created by legendary Blizzard...and for years, the game revitalized itself numerous times with fully packaged and inspiring updates (and the award-winning expansion set, of course) but I dare say that it is finally getting repetitive, for me at least.
However, if you are new to the universe of Diablo, I'm sure you will enjoy this game for months or even years like I have, and I am proud to have this game in my personal collection, which includes quiet a number of PC games.
Overall, this is well worthy of receiving a 5 star, and I should add that the sound track is also way over the sky.
A wonderful game, but don't ever use bots because they're tearing down the balance of the game!!!
Diablo 2 good to start with ----> QUICKLY becomes boring

Diablo 2 is good to play for the 1st time.
There isn't much replay value after 1st time. Even each successive Quest gets more boring because it is a rehashed formula.
Quest Formula from secret Blizzard QA research labs:
Quest "abc"
1. find and kill x number of small monsters (or, more accurately, 'wade' through x number of small monsters)
2. meet big monster. kill it
3. receive item to advance to next Quest (ie. go to step 1.)
What is amazing is the first time you play it it is fun because it is new and although there seems to be a lot of freedom in what you do, there is really no choice beyond choosing which way to kill a monster. There are no secret doors, environmental hazards like drowning or falling down a pit, traps (the 'traps' that do exist subtract some health every now and then <--that is it is to you after playing through the 1st couple of maps), no climbing, no riddles or puzzles, no environment interaction like searching shelves for hidden maps and switches. No mysteries or plot. No pissing in a well to poison it for the other characters (I mean it seems that way if you listen to the sound effect - it just hasen't been implemented).
The only other remaining REAL POTENTIAL hinted at in Diablo 1 (utilizing tactics in battle) was destroyed because it is not tactical at all. Even in the last Quests the most powerful creatures roaming around are completely not dangerous and fieresome: about as much as a gibberling, perhaps, in Baldur's Gate.
Diablo 2 may have had to happen this way though because it would be HUGE to make a true, interactive environment and mysterious, interactive and compelling story + Diablo 2. Blizzard has created a world engine where a unique wallpaper is pasted and all the monsters are dumped inside with one major, behaviour-defining flag (CHARGEANDKILLPLAYER = 1).
Gameplay
Gameplay (from secret Blizzard QA research labs):
Gameplay
1. run onto different map
2. look at moving graphics on screen
3. click on moving graphics until they stop moving
4. collect treasure
3. go to step 1.
The much debated RPG elements of Diablo 2 revealed:
1. click on people in town
2. __receive__ obligatory inane dialogue or skip and read Quest summary (in shorter more concise form than Quest "abc" above: "Find a and return to b" or, "Kill c")
3. gamble treasure for .00001% chance of receiving an interesting item
Now if any of the big bosses had shown intelligence and followed you through the portal to where you kept retreating to recharge health all the time you ran out of potions. THAT would be interesting. But as it is you attack the big, fat end boss, recharge health, attack the . . . and repeat that cycle 10x for victory.
Graphics
quite good. ability to look at town characters and quest milestones as hires images would have been nice. You find the few pixels defining a characters features and the environments stops you relating to anything in the game (ie you subconciously thinking when running across a map - happens only once upon entry to map: "some purpley dark cave that looks vaguely jagged" "now im running in some icy cave with a fancy name i can't remember . . . cool" :| Next time round: "mm. . purple cave" and "cyan and blue cave. vaguely icy"
Maybe if your character shivered and showed icy breath or had to wear furs, started slipping on ice, weapon freezing and snapping into shards, boots making crunching sounds, wading through snow then you may have appreciated that it was THE frozen river passageway. Also if you created firewalls and infernos that the cave would melt and snow and ice would collapse everywhere.
Sound
quite good where it is. needs much more to create immersive environment though
Many hours of fun/ Many hours of boredom

When you first start to play this game it's the funnest thing in the world. Leveling and customizing your own character i mean what could be better. After playing it for some hours you start to realize that all you are doing is clicking a mouse and its not really entertaining. Then you decide to try out closed battle.net and its cool. Again many more hours of fun. Then you try open battle.net. Parties over. hackers and scammers everywhere then you think its awsome and you learn how to do it. You make a hacked character and play. After about 2 hours you realize that this is VERY boring and quit playing Diablo for some time. Oh and if your lucky your hacked character will screw up and all that time you put into hacking it will go down the drain. You will come back to this game after some months and it will be fun again and the cycle will repeat. And that is what happens when you buy this. If your a fan on boredom AND fun then this is a dream come true! Happy gaming.
I really hate this!

I was definitely impressed with Diablo II. The expansion only made it better. The graphics, the gameplay, everything is flawless. I have only a few pet peeves with this game.
A.) Playing single-player[blows]. This game basically steers you into playing online.
B.) I had a lot of lag online. I have a cable modem. And I had lag. That's not right.
C.) The game is way to difficult. I put it down and gave it back to my friend because he would make fun of me for not leveling up by 20 every hour. I barely got to level nine in a week.
Still, however, it was pretty fun, and quite addicting for a while. I would reccomend it to anyone.
If your going to play video games make this one of them.

Diablo 2 with expansion pack is very replayable. Very fun and easy to learn but a long time mastering and lots of ways to do things.
I wouldn't really describe it as a role playing game at all however. You don't really play a role. You have one of 7 character types that you can develop in different ways. It's more of a game of character development and exploration of tactics from my point of view but it is very fun and liked by a wide range of people.
Diablo 1 I played a while back so having it free is a nice perk I guess. It was fun but has rather simple dynamics compared to what you get in D2 and D2X.
Some might want to give D2 a try and then get the expansion. Really, you are just shorting yourself. The world is far more complete if you just start the game with a full expansion install.
Be sure to download the most recent patch by connecting to battlenet or going to their website. Version 1.10 changes the dynamics of the game dramatically by introducing "synergy skills", improved monster AI and a lot of new items. It really improves the game and makes certain character builds such as the assassin and elemental druid far more playable.
This is a great offer!

It's a great offer to get both Diablo II and the expansion pack in one box, plus the original Diablo and a strategy guide. I liked the first Diablo but Diablo II is just great and the expansion makes it even better! If you like medieval, gore, hack & slash and roleplaying games you can't miss this one, Diablo and Diablo offer thrilling single player action with lots of quests and they both have great multiplayer modes. It's possible in online games to trade items with other players, join parties, duel other players and much more. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU BUY THIS ONE!

Highly recommended.
This game is great (Diablo 2 LOD). There is a lot of variety to it and it keeps you interested for a long time. The graphics are excellent and because they are all prerendered sprites (drawn by artists), this game doesn't use polygons and can therfor be played on lower powered computers. I have Diablo LOD installed on a 400 mhz computer with a 16 meg video card and only 230 megs of ram and it plays great.
The game plays great, is highly enjoyable, and offers hours, even days, of play. Its point and click, but it was thought out so that this is adequate control. The game is about tactics more than technique. Your ability to choose so many different characters with unique abilities is great fun. You get to see characters evolve and develop different strengths and abilities. Many of the magic options are very creative. This game was thought out and executed very well.
I miss the days when games had graphics in which the characters were actually drawn by artists and not "generated polygons" shaped like people. Although many games imitate the engine of Diablo, few to none of them use this style of graphics. The graphics of Diablo LOD still stand up to graphics of current games that use polygon based sprites. Would the Mona Lisa look better if it was a generated polygon sprite and not a two dimensional representation of a three dimensional object? Of course the graphics of Diablo are on a three dimensional plane, but the sprites are prerendered art none-the-less.
My only gripe about Battle Chest is that it does not include the add-on for the original Diablo, called Hellfire. Hellfire improves the original Diablo game considerably and adds more play value to it. I don't see why Blizzard didn't just buy the rights from Sierra for the game. (Seirra, not Blizzard, designed Hellfire).
Another problem with this game is that often you get a disc that is not compatible with WindowsXP unless you install the patch. There are roughly 10 revisions of Diablo 2. I bought it and my Diablo 2 discs were version 1.0 and I flipped out when they wouldn't play. Finally, I did some research on the net and solved the problem with the patch at the Blizzard site. All of the games really should be playable right out of the box on XP without having to search for a patch.
Minor shortcomings aside, this is a great game that I highly recommend because of its playability, challenge, beautiful graphics, and low system requirments.
A+

Blizzard is almost like the King Midas of computer gaming. It seems to me that every game they have their hands on, or directly produce is absolute Gold. If you like a never tiring adventure RPG style game then you will like this game. If you want an instant emersion into a world of never ending twists and quests, filled with challenging demons and lords, a free online community of tens of thousands to play against and months of sleepless nights; This is your game. I do no work for Blizzard, Amazon or a magazine. I am just filled with a passionate love for great games, and this is in my top 5 of all time.
