Let's break down this horrible insult to the reputation of the Man of Steel together, shall we?
Gameplay:
First off, the control system is completely counter-intuitive, an unforgivable thing in a game that centers on your ability to consistently track and rotate around enemies and goals. You have six different preset control settings, all of them bad, and no option for customized controls. This one inclusion might have made this game at least fun, if not great.
Your superpowers are visually impressive but are not very well executed. Flight controls are very loose and awkward, but this might be tolerable if it weren't so tightly tied to the fighting system. Before you can punch, freeze, or fry an enemy you have to establish a target lock. In this game, Superman has a slow "hover" flight mode and a faster "turbo" mode. The target lock can be easily broken by your enemy as they can easily outdistance you in hover mode and you break the lock yourself if you try to fly faster. Unforgivable. Also, your heat vision and super breath are too weak to be of use unless they are charged up for a few seconds, but those few seconds are often the difference between completing a level and having the fun of starting all over again from the beginning. Oh yes, there are NO checkpoints. It's all or nothing from level to level, and if killing the same things over and over weren't repetetive enough just going through the game once...
When carrying anything, whether it's people, vehicles, or a giant antenna, Superman slides around the hapless victim of superpowered inertia. This might have been all right, and actually added a bit to the game if it only happened with the larger objects, but it's kind of pathetic if Superman can't compensate for the added mass of a single person. It's pretty much impossible to get Superman to stop anywhere in the vacinity of your goals when you're carrying something. Speaking of goals, why would Superman waste his time putting out a fire when there are hundreds of robots flying around destoying the city? Doesn't Metropolis have a fire department? Somewhat nonsensical, don't you agree?
Graphics:
It's a fairly pretty environment, but a couple things struck me as odd. One thing I noticed while flying around Metropolis there are NO people in the city. None. Empty as an AA meeting unless your goal is to rescue someone, then suddenly there are a few people standing around the goal to welcome the victim back to the ground. Then they disappear. The other exclusion is that while there are flying cars(?), there is a monorail track and regular city streets but no train or land cars.
Sound:
The music is bad, and the voice acting / dialogue is insanely melodramatic and cheesy. "Great Krypton" is dusted off and reused in this game repeatedly. Sigh.
Conclusion:
Goodness, I can't believe you read all the way down here. I guess I didn't do a good enough job trying to talk you out of it and you're a way more committed Superman fan than I am. Go right ahead and add to cart, you masochist.
Best Super Hero Game Yet !!

It's a real shame if you listen to the bad reviews of this game. I almost passed this one over because XBOX MAGAZINE featured a 10 page rave review of it in one issue and two issues later, gave it a terrible rating after playing it because whoever rated the game, didn't have the patience to learn how to play it! The game has a heck of alot to offer, and it plays EXCELLENT! Yes, it is difficult, because you first have to take the time to learn how to control Superman (It took me about 40 Minutes to really get the hang if it, Now I'm kickin' butt). It's a game of skill, decision making and High Entertainment. This game is for the fans of Superman, and those with an open mind to be challenged. If you want to run around and shoot and destroy everything, go play Halo or some other mindless game. This ones for the REAL SUPERHEROES!! Another good game that requires a little skill is Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance. These two titles are well worth the price of an XBOX! For [the price], you can't go wrong with SUPERMAN!

This is a really fun game.As superman you fight robots,Metallia,
Brainiac 13 and other enemies but it's mostely robots. You also
have to meet timelimits and put out fires, rescue civilins,
lift up towers and put them back were there suppose to be
and chase bank robbers and pick up there car and take it to
the police station.Superman has several controls. He can run
or walk on the ground, hover in the sky and fly at high speeds.
As Superman you also have heat vision, freeze breath and use
punches to take out your enemies. The flying and fighting takes
some getting use to but once you learn these steps you can go
places. The city scapes are very beautiful. There is also levels
were you fly in space above earth's orbit and try to save
sattelites. You also fly to another planet warworld and fight
creatures mostley robots on that planet.Your main objective
is to destroy Brainiac 13 which is on the last level.
Supermans voice in this kind of sounds like Jimmy Stuarts
and he looks a little like him. This is one of the few games
that allows you to here either the music that comes with the
game or your own music soundtrack.Though the game music is fine
I chose to play the Superman Theme from the Superman Movie.
I have put the superman theme from Mantovani on my xbox hard drive and it sounds just like John Williams version. You
can't tell them apart. Also you unlock bonus materials when
you get to different levels but you can unlock everthing with
cheats which are available at supermangame.com.There's two bonuses that must be mentioned. When you unlock free mode you
can fly on any of the screens Metroplis, earth orbit etc
without enemies or time constraints. You just fly for the
fun of it.The flying in this game is pretty cool once you
learn how.The other bonus is the many costumes that you can
pick for superman to fly in.It even has the black one that
he used later in the comics. Also I forgot to mention Superman
must use telescopic vision(black button)and xray vision(white
button)to accomplish some missions.Xray vision helps Superman
find bombs in builings in cars. There is two negatives in this
game that should be mentioned though.Sometimes the controls
for some reason become difficult to use and you sometimes
bump into buildings and when you target an enemie you sometimes
fly by him and sometimes the control can make putting out
fires difficult. The Other negative is you don't get no
continues or no health energizers. If your killed or you
fail your mission you go back to the beginning of the level
you started and you don't get your health restored until you
finish the mission.Maybe this will be fixed in the next superman
game.I highly recommend this game as well as the companion book
superman the man of steel strategy guide.
great potential, but horrible controls

the controls are devastating to this game. Ofcourse if you play it long enough, you will somewhat get the hang of it, but that's ridiculous. if you're flying, there is one way to go up and down, but if you're standing still, its another way and one way is inverted while the other isn't. Its extremely frustrating.
I am a big superman fan, but this is too much. the graphics are cool, kind of comic book style and the powers are nice, but the contols just kill this game.

Excellent graphics. Smooth motions. Great attention to details like the cape waving in the breeze. With this game you become superman. You glide or zoom through three-dimensional space and use your powers to put out fires, keep those bad guys from sucking the juice from the buildings and defeat an assortment of evil robots and other surprises. Only the power of the XBOX can deliver today this level of realism. After you play this game you will probably want to go out and buy the XBOX to play some of the other high-level games uncle Bill has arranged to publish for his gadget.
What a disappointment

Ok, I bought the game 3 days ago and played it for about 5 minutes. I have been reading about it in magazines before it was released and was thinking that it would really be cool to have a superman game, and I couldn't have been more wrong.
It took me about 5 minutes to get bored. You fly around to these giant robots and punch them and theyre dead. I thought that there would be somewhere you could go so that you could just fly around. There isnt that I found, I may be wrong though. The game starts with Clark and Lois walking down the street and apparently theyre married, those graphics arent all that great in the intro. I was just incredibly disappointed in the game, I mean superman can be killed???? Whats up with that? The flying is very limited, you go up down left or right and thats it, there is no way to loop or roll or anything like that. You just fly to where the HUD pointer is telling you to go, push a button to lock onto a target and punch or use your laser eyes or blow cold air. A complete waste of money, but if any of you out there jsut have to have a copy and don't want to blow too much money, contact me, mine can be purchased :)

This game will please only the hard-core Superman fans, or those who haven't played many video games and don't know any better. The biggest problem is the linear and predictable (because of repetition) nature of the game. Superman has 25 levels, each of which contain a number of timed missions such as destroying robots or putting out fires. If you run out of time before you complete a task, you start the level over. It feels like you are being rushed through the game. Since the gameplay itself is not particularly engaging, the time factor is the only thing that adds anything that could remotely be called exciting.
Another big problem is that the controls are not zippy or responsive. The reason you have a lock-on button is because you cannot maneuver Superman quickly enough to take out the enemies without it. Graphics are really the only nice thing about this game. It consists of large, futuristic cityscapes. Windows on the buildings have impressive reflections. Superman's cape dynamics are particularly realistic. Unfortunately, graphics alone do not make a good game. I'd rather have average graphics and fantastic gameplay.

As an adult who enjoys video games, mostly war games, I really enjoyed this Superman game. I think alot of people are to tough on their reviews of games and this one as well.
I played the first two levels and found out when I truned off the game, that I had enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the entire game.
I think it's to easy to be critical of a game that got a so-so review to begien with. But concerning this game i had fun flying around and using all of Superman's powers. For people who enjoy tough games and for those who enjoy a fun video game, I think will enjoy Superman.
