If You Can't Get Into The Star Trek Convention...

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 11

...and you've lost your job at Radio Shack, then this is the game for you. "Tribes" is little more than a bad version of "capture the flag". It's a lame first-person shooter game in which your character can actually jump up and down (wow!), and even "communicate" with other players through such risque futuristic expletives as "Shazzbot!" If this game was a kid in your high school, you'd give him a swirly...if he weren't already so sad. Loads of way better games out there.

no more online

Aside from playing the game itself, the installation includes a client chat (IRC) program where after or before a good tribes game, you can talk with other gamers. Within the IRC, there are dozens of established teams or clubs called tribes (what else!). Each tribe is organized differently and holds meetings and arranges matches for the claim of world's best tribe! Pretty cool because even though the traditional map levels are the same, competition is intense!.. Tribes allows you to make long lasting friends via IRC. The shortcomings of tribes... First of all, if you wish to experience the music of tribes, you need to keep the CD loaded with a standard installation. The music sounds like queer sony playstation composition, and it hiccups each time it has to repeat. Secondly and seriously, tribes is infamous for crashing all of a sudden (write down that IP server address before you play!). The patches Tribes offers generally causes more problems than solutions (which explains why there have been so many offered). Updates and patches are mysterious. Some patches work for some OS configurations. Don't buy any Voodoo accelerator card because your graphics and color will look like 8-bit Nintendo. Instead, buy a Diamond Viper 770 TNT2 which I am happy to say works flawlessly with Tribes. You should buy this game because it has incredible replay value with dozens of new programmed weapons and deployable objects.

The game is cool, but...

The game is cool, however its an online game with just a single player tutorial. The game would be a "5", but because of the attitudes of the children playing online, it only gets a "3". Don't waste your money.

Definite must buy!

I wish that they had a rating of 4.8 since that is what this game deserves. The net code is so clean that I am amazed at how well it runs on my 56kb modem. The game is loaded with several weapons and armor classes. Only the light armors may fly planes, and the game has an interesting internal balance. But if you want crazy off the wall weapons then many servers run special mods that add boundless versions of everything. You can find servers that allow you to fly endlessly and fire hundreds of mortars in a few seconds. One problem is that I bought the game so far past its initial release date that there were few newbies for me to fight. So I basically get my butt handed to me by the experienced players. But you get better, and it has great replay value. Unfortunately I seem to have lost a little interest in it because the servers play the same maps way too often.

best first-person I've ever played

Normally I'm not a fan of first-person shooters, as I find them terribly pointless and stupid, as they are little more than "lets see how much I can blow up in as little time as possible." Yet Tribes is different. Its actually a fun game, since rather than dealing with fairly idiotic AI, you're combatting against actual human intelligence, making things so much more difficult. The gameplay interface is a snap, and the graphics are to die for. The only problems I came across were the sheer impossibility of playing on a regular modem, which is expected I guess (lucky I have a t1), and the lack of real preparation the tutorial gives you. While providing familiarity with the controls, weapons, and mission types, it does not even remotely prepare you for playing with real people. Expect a baptism of fire the first time you play, unless you luck out and end up with a bunch of other newbies. You catch on pretty quick though, surprisingly.

Addictive Tribes

Tribes is an Idictive game with endless weapon selections. The only down fall to this game is that there are no real offline training to really give a "newbie" the feel of online battle. I wouuld give it 4 rating.

Good game

Tribes is a great ON-LINE game! I was extremely happy with the fact that is runs very very smoothly on-line with my 28k modem! Of course I also am using a P3, and 450 Mhz... But the MAJOR flaw in this game is that fact that basically, there is NO single player game... You have a couple training missions, but hardly tells you what you need to know... But it is still a GREAT GREAT game...

Its a pretty cool game!

Well I've played this game a couple of times and its very well made. The graphics are so-so, and the textures for the ground look real close up. The guns aren't really unique, and some resemble a different gun but same look. Its good for people with 56K modems because the lag isn't bad, just depends on how much lag a game has. But overall, its pretty good.

One of the best sleepers I've set my dirty hands on!

If you need team-based with a blend of Unreal Tourney and the Sci-Fi Channel, here's a good title to work on. It's all multiplayer, so there's no single-player mode (besides the training missions). It's a hard game to explain, but I can say this: this game is fun and heck and lets you take any role, whether it be a repairman, heavy defence, or transport pilot. Buy this if your computer isn't so hot. If you do have a good computer with a GeForce2, get Tribes 2; it adds on to the first in almost every way and is a little more fun than this title. But get either one, Tribes is one of Sierra's best titles.
