A great, under-appreciated survival horror game

I really enjoyed this game. The suspense and scares were plentiful, and it challenged me as a gamer.

I've been a long-time fan of zombie films and survival horror games--since the original Resident Evil on the Playstation--and feel that this game comes as close to putting one into the role of a Romero hero as any game has done thus far. The enemies are relentless, the ammo supply is just barely adequate, and the music chills the spine. And the story is engaging and interesting--a worthy prequel to the Land Of The Dead film.

This game has been unfairly maligned. If you like zombie films, and survival horror games, you owe it to yourself to check out this under-appreciated masterpiece.

If you are a true Romero fan, buy this game!

Don't listen to the haters, they don't know what they are talking about(for the most part). This is not supposed to be an Unreal Tournament or Halo killer. You are not going to be running around with weapons and ammo everywhere, slaughtering wave after wave of the undead, doing triple wall jumps and then finding a vehicle to shoot or run over the 5 or so zombies slowly walking towards you.

This is a game based off George A. Romero's zombie universe. With that being said, this game hits the mark. It's you alone versus the growing army of the dead. Weapons are rare, ammuntion is sparse. How will you deal with those 5 zombies when you have a revolver with a few bullets and your trusty shovel? THAT is why this game hits the mark. It's a game that captures the atmosphere of the 4 Romero zombie movies, giving the player an overwhelming sense of dread, isolation, and despair. Moving from place to place looking for a safe haven and maybe, some supples. Being a huge fan of his movies, I knew what to expect and what not to expect and this game delivered on all counts. The graphics and music are good, not great, but then again this is a budget title.

The only legitamate gripe the detractors have for this game is the hit detection. This may have been because the game was rushed for a Halloween release. Sometimes the headshots happen and sometimes they don't. It's either bad hit detection or the game making you be really precise with your gun shots - after all, do you know how hard it is to shoot someone square in the head even from 15ft away? Try it at a shooting range. If you can do that, try it again while running. It's not as easy as some games make it.

Other "gripes" I have seen are somewhat laughable. The controller too sensitive? There is something called "controller sensitivity" in the options menu - try using it. The .22 is not powerful? I think someone needs to brush up on their firearms knowledge. It takes too long to reload? Maybe for you, but the plasma gun I found in the shed fires 400 blasts a second and no need to reload - like all real life weapons.

Like I said, if you are a fan of the Romero zombie films, aren't looking for a extremely fast paced FPS, don't mind the game being realistic with it's firearms, and love blasting the undead, you would do well to pick this up, especially at $30.

A big disappointment! Should have been so much better!

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of the George Romero Dead films, with Dawn of the Dead being my favorite, and I really enjoyed the recent Land of the Dead. When I heard that there was going to finally be a video game based on the Dead films I was freaking out. And then to find out it was going to be a first person shooter was even better. My excitement towards this game let me overlook the fact that this game was being released quickly and would be released at a cheaper price than most new releases. Well I should not have let my excitement get the better of me. This game is a huge disappointment. The graphics are okay but could be so much better than what they are. The movement of the character is awful and the hit detection when you shoot the zombies is bad. No matter where you shoot them it doesn't matter. Even as a true fan of the Romero films I cannot recommend this game. But I know that true fans, such as myself, will ignore the criticisms and still want to play this. So, if you really have to, rent it. In the end you will be glad that you did.

Not fun

In most zombie/survival games, the difficulty consists of the lack of ammo. Here, you have dozens of bullets.

So, where's the difficulty? In two things:

1-Instead of a headshot, zombies require a FIXED number of shots to go down. That means, a unarmed zombie will take 2 shots to go down, an armed one 4, and so on. Also, it doesn't matter where you shoot him- you can shoot him between the eyes or in the belly, but it will ALWAYS require two shots to go down.

2-But that still wasn't enough difficulty for the designers. So they decided to surround the player with zombies. That's right, even when you are in a tight hallway, the designers will find ways to throw zombies where you are not lookin'- zombies will fall down behind you trough holes in the roof. And they don't make any sound! Amazing! So a 200kg fatass or a 80 year old lady can jump down behind you without making ANY sound like some kind of CIA operative in a secret mission.

Not fun. Both things totally ruin the inmersion.

It's A Good Game

It's not a masterpiece game, but Land Of The Dead: Road To Fiddler's Green is a good game. The graphics aren't that good at all, but the gameplay is cool. I was expecting more, but this is the best you'll get for a game that wasn't really talked about.

If you're looking for a good cheap game to play, this game is perfect to play.

Some people need to realize why you buy games.....because they're FUN

This game is cheap. Not cheap in the time spent playing it sense or stupid "I got jipped by this cheap game" sense, but it is actually cheap money wise. But you didn't really need me to tell you that.

What I can tell you is that this game is awesome. Sure, it's not Halo 2 or Half-Life, but it doesn't claim to be. It offers some really great elements as far as storyline and realism goes. Now, I know what your thinking, if it was so realistic, it wouldn't have zombies because zombies aren't real. That is beside the point. And anyway, don't you buy games because they are fun, not because they remind you of real life. For example, you have to be precise with your shots, and choose when to use them, because ammo is not a plenty in this game.

What this game lacks in flashy graphics, it makes up for in one key area, an area that is important in the original Romero movies, as well as Land of the Dead. Melee weapons. you have a host of different melee weapons to use, each with its own special uses. Such weapons include a hammer, a baseball bat, a golf club, and a shovel. Also, you can pick up a fire axe. If you just had a bad day at work, and take it from me, i have had them, just sit down with this game, pick up a fire axe, and imagine that the zombie horde is really your boss. It truly helps you calm down, after removing his jaw, arms, and legs with said axe.

but anyway, this game is good for what it presents, and that is good, clean zombie filled mayhem.

Could Have been ALOT better

As a guy who has seen almost every zombie movie ever made, I had to pick this one up. While it's not entirely dissapointing, certain aspects did upset me. For example, the Xbox Live multiplayer levels are too small..which is bad because playing on Live is pretty much the most fun you can have with this game as you'll find the single player campaign gets old pretty quick. However, the first couple of missions on single player are classic; like when you're inside your house and they bust down the doors to get to you and when you go through the cornfield at night to get to your neighbors house only to find them zombie food. After that it becomes one boring level after another. Another complaint is, as other reviewers have quoted, the zombies seem to take a fixed number of shots to take down. The only weapon capable of killing with one shot is the revolver and you literally have to line it up perfectly in the top-middle part of their head for it to work. Anyway, this is a VERY different game which ya might like for under $30.

Zombies...I Love Zombies.

I'll be honest. If I were a game reviewer professionally I couldn't give this game very high marks. There are a lot of things wrong with this title that would be unforgivable in the "true reviewer's" eyes. That being said, this is still a really cool game.

You're either a Romero fan or you're not. I love zombie films, zombie games, zombie dolls, and zombie brains. I think it's safe to say that I love zombies. Romero is the Zombie King, bar none. Road to Fiddler's Green lets me be the zombie killer. I love that. I get to live in Romero's dark and twisted world for a while. There aren't a ton of weapons and ammo. You fight with what you can find. The zombies are creepy and it's fun to blow their heads off. The game is plenty challenging and will keep you entertained for quite some time. These are some of the good things. Unfortunately, I'm forced to talk about some of the bad things because you should know about them before you buy this game.

The targeting system is laughable. God, it's terrible. There is one level that this is so frustrating it made me want to put the game down. The accuracy is really wrong. There were times that I fired and knew I missed but the Zombie's head blew apart. There were other times that I would be trying to get a clean shot and the reticule would go really slow and then jump across the screen. It got to the point of stupidity at times that you needed accuracy and speed.

The gameplay is very linear. You can't go the wrong way. For some people this is not a problem but I would have liked some free-roam within the levels. There are times that you'll get a little confused and turned around but you'll recover quickly. The levels are not complicated you should be able to navigate them quickly. It's the zombies that will slow you down.

Over-all this is a good game because it lets you play in the world that Romero created. I'm a Romero fan so this is a great title for me. This isn't a game for children, it's gory, violent, and depraived but that's what makes it great. If you love Romero's work then you'll enjoy this game for what it is.

The Game was full of Zombies it was great they were all over the place and i really got into it, With that said i believe this game is good for anyone who is remotely into any zombie movies. The game itself was obviously rushed i ran into several glitchs. It was a fun game and i loved playing it. The game has a good story to it and The Xbox live Invaision was great. The games graphics are mediocore. The game play was fast paced and was exciting for the most part.

They're coming to get you!

Okay, for all the idiot and game mag reviewers, let's get this very straight-if you are looking for Doom 3,Quake 4,Half Life 2,and Halo 2,turn around and walk away fast because this game ain't it!But,hang in there with me,as a game in itself,I say it is great.I am very happy and satisfied with every cent I spent on this disc.FINALLY someone f--king wised up and made a true zombie game(no,not House of the Dead,Resident Evil,or Zombie
Revenge)And it is an FPS-I could not be more happier.Hee,Hee!It does a perfect job of replicating the world and society overcome by the zombie. The atmosphere really makes you feel alone in Romero's world, knowing that you are surrounded by the undead. The game succeeds in putting you in the middle of one of his movies.I've always had a soft spot for the classic shambler, and they are here in abundance and in many forms. The look, movements and sound effects of the zombies are excellent-with visible damage to the body, such as ripped out innards and rotting off jaws for example. And you can chop or blow off their arms and legs.Does it get anty better than this?Exploding heads are here too.The graphics are really good, despite the unreal ungine being a little old.People have complained that the graphics are drab, bringing no life to the world.Exactly, there is no life in this world. These geniuses don't see how this further adds to the atmosphere of lonliness and horror. The music does a great job of this too-kind of reminds me of Dawn of the Dead mixed with Quake.Anyway,it is really good and sometimes downright terror filled.Enemy A.I-yes,the achilles heel of the gaming masses. My little gamers have said that the A.I is dumb.Well, yes!Zombies are dumb, stupid!Very dumb.Have they watched any of the movies? And also the fear factor is high.I think it is pretty much on par with Doom 3.C'mon,don't tell me you don't feel the fear and anxiety creep in you when you descend deeper into the police station, hoping to find some spare ammo anywhere,or when you are traversing the tight, back alleys of the abandoned City of the Dead. The story is good, but sometimes I don't get it.Everyone is acting like the zombie phenomenom is brand new, like Night of the Living Dead rather than Land of the Dead. Also,I beat it in a couple of days and I want more, now!I just hope that Groove makes a sequel.Well,I 'll just have to wait for City of the Dead. So,overall it's a 5 for everything I've described and for the fact that I've been waiting for this since the days of Doom and it has delivered in spades. And it is only $29.99.So at least Groove is not trying to rip you off unlike some companies who charge you $50 for crap like Fantastic 4 or Catwoman. You know,in closing,I must confess.I just don't understand people. How can this get bad reviews, but for chrissakes,Steven Seagal's music cd(yes I said music),gets 4 1/2 review stars! What!
