I played the demo for this game and I just have to say that this game rocks. It has awsome graphics and gameplay. A great game!

Shogun looks stunning. But it has a user interface from hell. As you are struggling with camera viewpoints and group commands and battle formations the AI is charging you. Obviously the AI has not to struggle as much as you do. The battle tactics of the AI are very good, so you are slashed and diced into sushi before you know it. The soldiers are blurry and all have the same color. The devolpers should have looked at the classic Total Annihilation before they made Total War. One star for the AI and battle ground graphics.

It gives the strategic a chance to wield an army of samari that yeilds to his or her every whim. It features adreneline pumping combat and samari warriors that fight to the death. If you want to command in battle, lead your men into battle, and take the victory, I recommend it for you.

This Is a good game!

I have played a few strategy games and many tactical games and this one is the best of both. The game designers made a ferocious AI (though you can learn to beat it after a few months) and really attempted to simulate large scale battles in ancient Japan. The game focuses on combat so you do not have to waste time gathering resources.

There are only a few games worth playing over and over again and this is one.

This is the game to get!

An excellent combination of rts with a pretty fun turn-based game as well. The graphics will not dissappoint you. This is what I want to see them do with Age of Kings. It is more involved than point and destroy. Believe it or not, there is real strategy involved here!

Gaming at its best

Like most of the reviews you've already seen I too have only explored the world of shogun via the demo. I consider myself a hardcore strategy gamer, playing great titles like Age of Empires II(I also recommend this game). When I first heard EA was coming out with the game, it went right to the top of my wish list and I've already pre-order it. Now I want to convince you how good this game is, and I'm going to sum it up as best I can. Shogun Total War is taking the gaming world up a level much the way Final Fantasy did for Playstation. In most strategy games you will find that you can support up to 200 troops...HEY! not bad...but why not 1000? Well in Shogun total war its more than that, and the armies are easy to raise, but for you new types I recommend you avoid playing this game online or through multiplayer for it is much to advanced for the average gamer. This is where my review takes a spin. The game is great but too hard unless you have TONS of experiance. The gameplay is horrible. I myself want to control 1000 troops with ease. The game is too hard to enjoy yourself and will bore the pants off of you in 3 days unless you play it with friends in multiplayer. Your best bet is to buy AGE OF EMPIRES 2 and then get the expansion pak for that which is just coming out. AOKII will make Shogun total war look like S***. But if you like large bloody masacares, and have lots of experiance, then go buy it. Be warned you will not have fun unless you are beating your closest friend via the multiplayer! So lets review...This game is boring unless you play your friends, or are good at this type of game. The gameplay was rushed and is too hard to controll with ease. So purchase Age of Empires II the age of kings which is the better than this game. You can then buy the expansion for Age of Kings, thats double the fun. The only reason i'm getting the game is because i'll be playing it only with my friends. Don't wast money on something too good to be true. I still will give the game five stars because it is impressive and features new stuff never seen before. Overall you'll throw it away in a week max.

The most fantastic strategy game!

It's all fantastic!
Oh! And what is more, the super japanese music!
Oh yes and the A.I.! It beated me at the beginning several times,

A beautiful game, the color, the animation is perfect. When I loaded this program to my laptop,it 'crashed' my laptop (so I removed and reinserted battery),but the second time I loaded the 'Shogun: Total War' Program,it purred like a kitten, sorry to say 'laptop'(Microsoft windows XP) still crashes. This is no x's and o's game, this is truly like watching a movie like 'Ran' or 'Kagemusha'... Next you have to punch-in a 22 digit serial number from a 'red card' located in the box, then press 'next' on the program like 8 times before you get what your looking for. The custom mode is great, you get horsemen [60],riflemen[60],lancers[60]. You get about 16 units of [60],what ever you want. Means in custom mode you can have 960 men and the enemy limited to 60,which is great, you have the control over numbers, you are the 'master' of the game play. Hope this was helpful. Update: 5/17/03,just got new laptop,'Sony VAIO PCG-GRV670 Notebook','Intel P4,2.6GHz Processor w/400 MHz,512MB DDR RAM Memory,40GB Harddrive,ATI Radeon 9000(64MB of dedicated video memory),8X DVD ROM Drive, can get you 'in' and 'out' of 'Shogun:Total War' and 'Medieval: Total War' with a smile on your face, guaranteed! You can play these games on laptop after all! You learn something new every day, ready for 'Rome: Total War'!!!

Buyer Beware! STW won't work with Ge Force Drivers!! Read--

Nice game, but I've just upgraded my PC to a Ge Force video card, and STW will not run if you have Ge Force drivers! Check ea.com and under technical support this is all thoroughly documented. There doesn't seem to be any patch or fix forthcoming according to what I'm reading there. And that's a shame because it's a fine game. Check Ea.com's website for an official announcement about this problem being fixed before buying.
