The BEST WWII flight sim!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 8

DO NOT, I Repeat, Do Not pay any attention to the reviewers that said this game [is bad] or doesn't work! This IS the best WWII flight sim. I have WWII fighters, CFS I&II, European Air wars, and many others. This beats them all. More Authentic, Larger battles, great graphics, and many more perks. Not only can you fly the Spitfire, Hurricane, ME 110, and ME 109, but you can fly the Ju87 Stuka and be a gunner on the other German Bombers. The ONLY thing that could have been a little better is the sound, but the sound is fine and better than most sims. If you have not already, BUY THIS GAME! You WILL NOT be sorry!

If you are a fan of the period, you ought to try this. There is a very helpful flightsim community at ... and they have worked through all the major issues and have released a large number of modifications to enhance the game visually.

BoB realistically recreates England and the huge scale of events of the Summer of 1940 in full authenticity. There is no other title that allows you to manage an entire airfleet (Luftwaffe) or the whole of RAF figher command, and then jump into the cockpit of your Spit or Hurri to face over 200 enemy aircraft. The attention to detail is stunning, and since the game's source code has now been released it is now being developed and continues to mature.

Once you have it running it is quite unique.

Superb.

I have been a fan of flight sims for a long while. Since the early '90s at least. Only very rarely does a game come along that stuns with its incredible graphics, unbelievable engine and stunning gameplay. The engine is powerful enough to display literally hundreds of aircraft at one time, really pulling you into the feeling that you are part of a massive battle and (if you play as the RAF) that you are well, and truly outnumbered. The level of difficulty in the game is almost infinitely customisable, with options ranging from invincibility to manual or automatic engine control, to having the option to set the weather so it is always favourable. Literally anyone of any skill level can enjoy this game. The aircraft are a joy to fly, and feel very realistic (although I, personally have never flown any of the aircraft in question, they stil feel right). And the incredible adrenalin rush that comes from being involved in a dogfight with multiple squadrons of spitfires and hurricanes versus hundreds of bombers and ME109s is second to none. The only game in recent years to even come close is "B-17 Flying Fortress : The Mighty Eighth", which, while still a very good game (and very worthy of your attention) is not as good as this. As for the numerous people who have had technical issues with this game, all i can say is that i'm sorry this has infringed their enjoyment of such a fantastic product. I, personally, have not had any such issues, and on my system (PIII 800 with 256Mb RAM and 32Mb Video Card) the game loads very quickly and runs incredibly smoothly.

In short, This game is the ultimate flight sim for anyone who wants a historical game with a real sense of involvement in the battle being fought. For a modern day couterpart see the wonderful "Falcon 4".

Excellent Flight Sim...

BoB is the best Flight Sim I have ever played...

For my comparison I also own MSFS 2002(Microsoft Flightsim),
IL-2 Sturmovik and Mig Alley, which I love too...but I find myself playing with BoB most of my time

Some people found there to be a problem with stutter, I have been lucky in this repect...has I never had this problem ! But if you find that you do then the BDG (BoB Developer Group) has fixes and suggestion to run the game at its optimum :) You can also find usefully information and Mods (Fixes/Texture/skinning/models)
...

The BDG also has its own site, with the latest news: ... Note* the BDG is a free not for profit group, who are just happy developing BoB to new levels. The BDG formed after Rowan released the sourse code to the public so that they could make modifications etc in the code... I'm a member of the BDG and that is possible why I give it 5 stars rating ! But just try it you'll see that I'm right :)

Use the Update Patch!

I was the second reviewer of this game to post on Amazon. I was not impressed. I am now! Great work has been done by the "BoB Development Group"[] Their updates have transformed the game for me (including the latest .90 version). Forget Rowan's tech support All the help in the world is there, quick and friendly.

It doesn't tolerate marginal graphics systems. If in doubt, go to the message board and ask if yours will work.

This is my third posting for this game. Buy it, update it, and enjoy an excellent WWII flight sim!

Don't believe the reviewers that say the game doesn't work. I found that to be true at first. Then I went to the Talonsoft webpage and downloaded FAQ and patch. The patch wasn't needed, but the FAQ clued me in that my machine's settings were way too low. Beware, you will need a higher end machine--1078X840 whatever, is required at minimum to run the game. Resetting to that solved all the problems and man does the game run smooth. Lots of planes in the air, chatter, and gorgeous graphics.

I don't usually like flight sims. I have a hard time with them. So, the ability to lock out "true" aerodynamics is a must for me to enjoy it. B-o-B has a "novice" setting that allows this, yet keeps the unique nature of the planes a game factor. Brit planes stall out in dives (no fuel injectors), Germans don't (injected). You can also set the various settings for unlimited ammo vs. limited, backout, whiteouts (glare)etc. The views take a bit getting used to (can see why that Mustang bubble top is a big plus later in the war) and that is why I don't usually like flight sims; but this one is functional completely from the joystick. A ten button joystick is best but my 8 button works fine (but no airbrake, dang).

I like the game alot. I like Red Baron 3d but did not like Rowan's other game I bought (Mig Alley). Guess I just like prop action--a little slower than jets.

But don't be lulled--those Spitfires and Focke Wulfs really move!

Don't hesitate to buy this one--just be sure to get the FAQ from Talonsoft's website (and the patch if you have graphic cards problems)

Be ready for the learning curve

First, the people who have this game at the bottom of their closets are right. Unless you have just the right vid card, monitor, and memory you can forget it. Second, what comes in the box is incomplete. You will need the version .973 from the Battle of Britain Developers Group. There is no key card (CFS@ comes from Amazon with no manual or card) so you will have to get on the forum there and ask where to download the most up to date, and then you will have to deal with the the fact that the European keyboard needs to be hand marked to match yours, if your from the USA. On the plus side the people on the forum are very helpful.

You will find the learning curve daunting. If you want to fly Spitfires and you start learning on them, you will probably fail. You need to master the Hurricane first. The flight sim is harder than CFS2 and IL-2. B-17 has a tough learning curve but that has to do with it's complexity and all its quirks. BoB has a tough curve because of the flight sim. I've been "flying" sims since Lucas Films BoB. Then the Dynamix trio and the stuff from Microprose (all DOS). Picking up again a few years ago in Windows I found that much has changed. But I have yet to meet a learning curve as steep as BoB.

My copy too sat at the bottom of the closet until my old machine fried and I had to get a new one. So far I haven't had the CtD problem, but if I do it will be back to the BoBDG forum.

You have to be really interested in the Battle of Britain to buy this one. So don't buy unless your frustration level is high. Of course the BoB add on for CFS2 is a joke (misnamed for one), and I don't know of any others.

...It is still difficult to fly and even experienced simmers would be advised to start with the "novice" flight model. The AI is a lot better than in, say, CFS2 but it's not perfect. The best thing to do is to get the aftermarket patch form BDG (Battle of Britain Developers Group) which solves almost all the problems whilst improving the graphics and gameplay and is a free download. Check at SimHQ.com for details. The overall improvements to the game, along with the dynamic campaign, suddenly make this worth having...as long as you're prepared to spend a lot of time setting it up.

This game (like my title) is No Good.. there are just so many other flight simulation games that this one is just like the otherz only u need a REALLY good computer just to run it... yes it has stunning detail and many planes, but if u dunt have the machine to run it... itz No Good... If u do happen to own a pentium 4 with a ge force 3 then this game might be worth it... but... overall therez other flight sim games simular to this one and this one is just No Good
