Let The Buyer Beware

My kids have been BIG fans of the Need For Speed series so I leaped at the chance to purchase Porsche Unleashed. Unfortunately, this one has probably the worst human interface of any software I have ever purchased. The pull-down menus are hidden behind other (evidently higher-order) screen items and hence unusable. The opening screen (which is supposed to let you select your driving persona and establish your named account) was totally hidden behind one such "radar plot" in the middle of the screen. After much blind mouse-clicking to locate the hidden controls I was able to proceed to getting lost in the "Options" setup... from which there is no apparent escape other than exiting the game.

All of this, of course, is assuming that the fault is not that of my industry-standard 300MHz HP computer. As a customer, however, I expect these kinds of products to work first-time, every-time on standard hardware... inadequate testing ? .

This product is definitely not up to Electronic Art's usually excellent level of quality.

Not supported on NT, 2000 and XP

Not supported on NT, 2000 and XP - useless for me. Great game, tried it on W2K pro, but it randomly resets itself, corrupts player data... not fun to lose several hours.

Needs a 3D accelerator

I bought this game to run on my laptop. Unfortunately I don't have a video card that will run Accelerated 3D graphics so the game will not run at all. So it seems to be a great game from the other reviews but make sure you're system will cope.

What a disapointment!

It teases you with great courses (not enough of them, what about the autobahn guys?), good graphics and some of the cars I was hoping for. Unfortunately it doesn't matter that the courses look cool and you're in a great car because they got it all wrong. The fatal flaw with the game is the horrible handling. I have driven Porsches and ,although you can let off the gas at the wrong point in a turn and put it backwards through a hedge, they are the best handling cars ever made. And that balogna that you have to know how to drive them is so wrong. The 911 is the one car made that you can pretty much put you foot down and hang on. The lack of traction makes this game unrealistic and unplayable. And it's too bad Because I loved "Hot Pursuit". They could at least have the car tuning section like in other NFS. I guess if you like ice racing this game is for you.

An Otherwise 5-Star Game

I personally feel that the game deserves 5 stars and that it is a great successor to Need For Speed 3 and 4.

HOWEVER, there is one design flaw that won't allow gamers to enjoy the game to its full extent. Most of the cars and tracks are locked and the only way to access them is to go through a very challenging Evolution mode. So, if you think you'll buy this game and take a 911 Turbo for a spin, you are in for a sad surprise.

Not up to snuff!

I'll probably be one of the few people who trash this title but I've got to speak my mind. I'll warn anyone who has a geforce card to stay clear for a while. The read me file makes reference to the fact that there is some instability with older drivers of this video card. Well I have the latest drivers and I still cannot complete ONE race without a complete system lockup! The graphics are outstanding but I have another big gripe here. The "Newer more realistic physics" of the came cause the car to bounce up and down constantly and if you are prone to motion sickness get ready for a major headache. I have not found a way to turn this off, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I am a HUGE fan of the NFS series but this is one major dissappointment so far. I hope you have better luck.

Locks up

The game itself seems to be pretty good, but my pc locks up way too often right in the middle of a race........very frustrating!! And I have a brand new 950MHz NVida HP, so I know it's not my pc's problem. But even if it didn't lock up, I don't think it's as good as NFS III. The tracks aren't as challenging, and the other race cars don't challenge you as well. The Porshe cars are cool, and the graphics good, but the fact that it locks up my pc and I have to reboot every ten minutes is rediculous. I just bought the game 10 days ago and I've already given up on it. Don't waste your money.

Need more fun

To start out skip this game. Yes it looks great and the graphics are some of the best, but this game lacks the fun that the last version had. There are only four tracks to race. Yes there are lots of porsches to choose from, but the lack of tracks, different races and the missing pursuits is this games downfall. Who wants to drive one of the best cars in the world on these lame tracks and never get to fell the real speed of the game. If you want a better driving game go with driver or super bike 2001 or 2000. These are some of the best looking and best driving games, because of the number of tracks, graphics and just plain fun to drive. Once again skip Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed.

Good, but not much substantial improvement

I think EA should stop trying to release a new version every year and really work on the NFS series to improve it. There really isn't a huge difference between NFS2 and this fifth installment. Yes, the graphics are a bit better as well as gameplay, but nothing compared to a lot of other sequals out there. If you have never played any other NFS games, then you still will love this, but for those of you who already own one of the older ones, you really aren't missing a whole lot.

The best in the series?

I've been playing the NFS titles since number 2 and we are now on the 5th. Its hard to play a game in a series without judging it against previous ones. When I first played NFS5 it had a very different feel to the previous ones. The graphics engines on 3 and 4 were almost identical. 4 had lots additions to 3, it was the introduction of the career mode, damage but it did sometimes feel like an add on pack as it had the same 'feel' - similar cars, same gameplay/graphics.

Still, after much debate I have found I enjoyed the 4th installment the most because of the introduction of the new career mode.

So what additions were there to #5. Does it feel like another add on pack? It plays like a different game entirely. Gone are the cops (sob!)and the range of cars and bring on the Porsches! There are TONS of them and everyone is different. It was a bit boring at first with the old cars (as they drive like a wheelbarrow!) but once you get going this is a hughly addictive game.

My favourite part is still career mode where you start of in the 60s with old cars and build your way up to modern day. Winning tournements means you get money to buy new cars and so on.

The graphic engine has been totally revamped. Cars movement is more realistic as is collisions. One bad hit will do your car a lot of damage unlike before. Steering will suffer (similar to Rally Championship) and you wont just get big knocks bumping up your damage the same as small knocks. The graphics are also the best of their kind. You need a good spec machine (nothing less than a PII400) and although there always seems to be a lack of tracks in NFS games they are a joy to ride. They have multiple routes for the first time and the cars AI has been improved. I didn;t find myself ALWAYS winning and you have the option to buy parts for you car which will substancially make it quicker. There are the usual modes of play aswell as a Factory Driver mode where you have to complete tasks like drive in and out of cones in a certain time etc. I didn't find myself playing this too much.

I miss the other cars, cops and wish there were more tracks (loses a star for this) but this doesn't detract from an excellant racing game. I still played NFS4 more when I first got it but this game is the bees knees. Much different to the other titles and holds the crown of the best racing graphics to date. You wont be dissopointed unless you want to be a cop! Go for a ride!
