I've owned all of the better flight simulators, and IL 2 Sturmovik is my favorite! The realism is awesome as is the number of views (of the aircraft, inside and out) The aircraft that were difficult to fly in real life (MEl09 amongst others)are difficult in IL 2. Flying as a rear gunner is an excellent feature. The choice of weather is excellent. I particulary like hiding in the gorgeous clouds and pouncing on the enemy!
There isn't a competitor around that shows the realism of 6 or eight machine guns going off as IL 2 does. If you dial in flack and fly through it, you can hear the flack strike your plane and look out of the canopy and see large, jagged holes in the wings and body. Engine hits cover the front windows with oil. Pilots bailing out look real, as do the parachutes. When I crash, the pilot jumps out of the plane if he's still alive and runs about 30 yards and dives to the ground. How much more realistic can it get? The planes are detailed beautifly and the sound of the ME 190 wide open with the boost kicked in is music to one ears!

This is the best flight sim you could buy(Except for IL-2 Forgotten Battles), I run Win XP with a GeForce 4 video card and have had no problems. I like others just stared in awe at the graphics when I first loaded the game. The amount of detail just cant be found in any other sim. If you are going to get 1 Flight sim this is the one to get. Unless you want 2 then get its sister game IL-2 Forgotten battles and fly even more planes.
Why did I wait?

I have seen this game out for awhile now. I really dont know why I waited. Well I bought the CH Fighter stick, and USB Throttle controller. This game runs great with them. The graphics in this game kick on anything I have. It runs great too. I also got the Forgotten Battles and Ace expansion pack. I total enjoy playing this game. Very realistic, and sounds great. It now my favorite flight sims, next to Microsoft 2004. Combat or noncombat I am flying. My only regret is why did I wait. UBI Soft did it right on this game. I have other product from UBI Soft but this game is #1. I wont wait so long next time. If you are in to Flight Sims like me dont pass this one up.
Nothing else even comes close!

IL2 Sturmovik is amazing. Since I started playing it 3 months ago, it has taken over my every free moment. While I like to play 1st person shooters like Medal of Honor, Soldier of Fortune II and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, this is by far the most immersive and amazing game I have ever played. Unlike first person shooters, there is no set script in this game therefore it offer endless challenge and entertainment. I just shot down my first FW190 last night while flying a Russian Yak 3 and I am still on a high. Yes the game is tough but this is part of the challenge. Easy = boring in my books, and this game is never boring. Just imagine closing in on an enemy fighter for the kill, you are almost there and your tigger finger is itching to fire...when tracers flash over your wing. A determined enemy is on your tail. You press on...any second now and you will have a kill. But damn, hits!! Your plane shutters and a wing is blown off, you are heading for earth. Damn it, it only you had another couple of seconds, you could have gotten a kill and escaped....That's what happened to me last night. Incredible. Do yourself a favour, buy this game - or even better the upcoming FORGOTTEN BATTLES and take a week off work. It will be the best vacation you ever had!
IL-2 Sturmovik is the best!

If you've got the memory, this is the combat flight simulation. As real as it gets, these planes require skill to fly. I've got a nice computer but weak on memory, the 128MBs of RAM wasn't enough when you're in the hot of it. An extra 512MB RAM (a bit excessive maybe?) turned this game into pure delight. It will be awhile before we see anything top this!
Extremely realistic

This flight simulator makes you understand that planes are really made of iron. Simply trying to take off with the IL-2 is extremely difficult: First keeping the plane straight in the runway takes some skill; if you try to climb a little bit too steeply the plane will stall; flying very close to the ground until the plane gains speed requires concentration and very subtle movements of the stick. This gets worse if the plane is fully loaded with rockets and bombs. But taking off is only a child's game compared to landing (specially a Bf109) or trying to shoot down a bomber.
The only drawback I can find is that maybe the scenery simulation is not that much realistic. The lighting, clouds, etc. is excellent, but you don't get to see the objects unless you are very close, and this requires that you learn the landscape, specially for landing, flying around many times. You will not see the landing field until you are two kilometers away, and that's a bit too late for proper alignment. You can always zoom your view though, but I feel it is more realistic to have the view from inside the cockpit.
All that said the game is very fun to play. I have expended many hours playing without noticing. Even if you don't run missions, just flying the different planes is fenomenal.
Online dogfighting ROCKS! Everything about this game is fun

What can I say - this game is just about the best, most complete flight simulator. And the types of planes and flying you do is fun. I think the best function with this is the fact that you can dogfight with other people through the internet. The dogfighting is well rendered and there's no lag when manouvering. The internet play has some drawbacks (to be expected, sometimes it hangs up or certain players with bad internet connections fly unprecitably), but if you have a good broadband connection the dogfighting is super fun. The standalone game is great fun as well and I get sensless joy from blowing up tanks and shooting down Nazis. Every element of the graphics is VERY realistic. Frankly must be as good as the military simulators they use these days. Lots of fun if you like to fly planes!!!!!

By the way, this game is not made by UbiSoft, it is a product of Russian software firm 1C. This explains why there is no swastika on the German planes - this nazi symbolic is illegal in Russia. That's understandable if you think of how many Russians died in the World War II.
Great agame, great team of people who developed it. Wish them good luck!
