Bah! At least it was cheap...

Thankfully, I didn't waste much money on it. My seller was alright and everything was there, including the cool cloth map. However, I had problems. For one thing, it took me the longest time to level up, even with all the sidequests. For another, the enemies were too blasted difficult, the magics tended to backfire in the worst way. I would face a wolf with a paladin, a druid, a cleric, and a bard. You would think that the druid would be about as strong as a wolf, but no, my first druid got killed of by a couple of goblins. Then I fired a burning hands at point blank range on these wolves and it killed my full-hp paladin, while barely scratching the wolf. My paladin has 10 or 12 hp and the wolf had 13 hp on average, which led me to believe that at least my paladin would make it against this critter. But three hours later, when I got to the cave, I had trouble beating orcs. I had to have my whole party gang up to beat one and there was a cave full. Then when my thief finally levels up, I never figured out how to increase hp or anything else for that matter. Having a 2nd level bard with as much or not much more hp and no discernible increase in effectiveness (he seemed _less_ able to fight orcs now) was the final straw. I had wasted enough time on this game. It would have been one thing if I was given enemies like that in later battles, but I had such enemies from the beginning. Furthermore, I had my biggest problem with the fact that point and click with the mouse was the only option, half the time, I killed my own party.

I would recommend a multiplayer game if it was more like Neverwinter Nights: hands on tutorial, cursor keys enabled (if I remember correctly), totally customizable controls. If I wanted to set the format to call animals, to arm, and to use certain spells it was easy to do. Level up increasing was easy as well.

Great Dungeon Romp

This game is absolutely wonderful for those people who want a Diablo type hack and slash with good control of all party members. I love the fact that you can pause to issue orders easily, and the rapid accumulation of experience keeps new spells and abilities flowing. All in all, a great game!

OK, but not great

Standing alone, Icewind Dale is an enjoyable game. But, when compared to BG2:SoA, there is no comparison; BG2 is far and away the best of the two. Since I'm using Icewind Dale to kill time while I await the expansion for BG2, It's been sort of a disappointment. While creating your party is somewhat fun, especially choosing portraits, names, etc. I really miss the quirky NPCs I've found in the Baldur's Gate games. The artwork in Icewind Dale is absolutely beautiful, and I've also noticed everyone raving about the music. Actually, the music isn't that noticeable. Also, I don't like how your characters start out at first level. They die too easily! I have probably poured thousands of gold into resurrection spells. The plot is fairly interesting, but no where near as involved as BG, BG2, or Planescape:Torment. Don't let me put you off. Icewind Dale is a good game: Entertaining, fun, and with some really nice items.

TOTALLY AMAZING GAME!!!

Icewind Dale has to be one of the BEST computer RPG games of all time! It has everything one looks for in such a game; from an incredible setting, to a highly original plot, to excellent multiple roleplaying options, to outstanding graphics, to extraordinary accuracy in relation to Dungeons & Dragons, and much, much more!
There is something here for everyone as the variety of challenges is large indeed, including battles, puzzle solving, and dialogue among others.

The game is set on Toril and specifically in Faerun. It deals with a great evil that has arisen and descended upon the region bringing the people misery and despair.
The story as a whole is excellent! The plot is so incredibly well written and presented that the gamer feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Moreover, the game does a great job of presenting the distinct cultures and civilizations of the inhabitants/peoples of Fearun, and Icewind Dale in particular. This has, without a doubt, been achieved as a result of a great deal of research that has gone into learning and understanding the numerous and often complex characteristics of the Forgotten Realms world.

Strongly recommended along with the Baldur's Gate series and Planescape: Torment.
Trust me, you will not regret it!

Remember Hack-and-Slash Dungeon Crawls?

This marvelous little game was exactly what the doctor ordered. Harsh, unforgiving monsters... tons of action... beautiful spell effects... and most importantly, the ability to create and control an entire party of six characters.

In a game that harkens back to the old Gold-box days, Black Isle has created a fun, battle-heavy adventure that WILL take you back to the nostalgic early days of gaming. You know, when you were a kid and wanted to fight mosters and not worry about the implications of removing predators from an ecosystem?

Icewind Dale is all that and more. I heartily recommend picking it up if you love action-oriented RPGs, or if you just want to take one last spin on the D+D hackandslash bandwagon.

Great artwork and music enhance the tried and true Baldur's Gate game engine. So far I have found that, to my surprise, the game has a pretty good story and is not just a dungeon hack. But I have to admit that going on the old-fashioned monster and treasure hunts is fun in its own regard. I'd recommend this game for any fans of old-school adventure games, where half of the fun was finding the loot after the battle.

A Good Game But Can Get Monotonous

I really enjoyed this game. If you liked either of the "Baldur's Gate" games you will too. The only thing wrong was there was not enough plot and you have to fight your way through most of the scenarios. This gets old.

A plus here is that you get to create all the characters, which gives the game a personal touch.

I recommend this game with the expansion, "Heart of Winter."

Serving up a party of 6

I just finished IWD, it kept me busy for 2 months. This a very flexible game, allowing you many choses on the type of party that you wish to play with. I found the beginning of the game very easy. If you are familiar with RPG's then you should have no trouble putting together a party that will last you throughout the game, avoiding false starts. The game is called a dungeon crawl. Meaning that there is more action and less story than you find in other RPG's. However there is a story and will keep you amused as you find out what is going on. There is also a few surprise villians. This game is well worth buying, you will get many hour of entertainment from it.

I can't believe I bought Icewind Dale based on the reviews I read here at Amazon! What an idiot I was! The people that said it is a great game must be easily amused. I found it very very disappointing. The game is a complete farse. The price is absurdly outrageous considering what you get. For those who have yet to make a purchase, do yourself a favor and buy something else.
