This game is probably the best RTS game out there. Its got great graphics, an awsome camera and, amazingly, unit speech that ISN'T annoying! Another thing is the level of customization. You can customize what you're bringing on your mission, and what type it is (scout, light, regular, or heavy) and the attributes (recon/speed,offensive,defensive,balanced). You can also customize the special weapons.
The plot is amazing. Just when you think you know where this game is going, *WHAM* it changes course.
The game is very unlike other RTS games of it's time, such as StarCraft and Warcraft 2. Instead of the extroardinary boringness of building up a base, gathering resources, tech tree, etc, you get your units instantly as the dropship comes in and you have no base to defend(except on certain defence missions). The only thing you really have to defend is your units.
The unit experience in this game is excellent. Instead of micromanaging every single unit, you control squads, which levels up your units faster.
Ex. My Light Terradyne Squad leveled up! (Ground Control)
Ex. 2 of my 12 Grizzly tanks got promoted! (Red Alert Two)
Tell me about another game that has all of your units HP, type, how many units left in the squad, KIA or not, whether they are taking damage, and favorite pizza topping in a small transparent tablet smaller than your big toe? Ok, maybe not the pizza topping, but thats beside the point. The "Hide Squad Button" command literally hides them. I mean not "Here is a little thing to show you where they used to be" kind of hiding, i mean GONE kind of hiding.
The in-game sound effects are great. Move the camera to the top of a cliff, you hear the wind (Or is that artillery shots?). Move closer to your Marine squad running from a squad of Attack Aerodynes, you hear their footsteps. Get a close-up on a Light Terradyne, the engine gets louder.
The only only only thing in this game that is needed is the addition of a regular APC's so you don't get your Command APC vaporized by trying to drop troops into battle.
Those who think this game needs water units, you are SO wrong. Water units would not be able to follow your land units to the enemy base. They would be practically worthless. I'm not talking about amphibious units (which actually would be an awsome addition) I'm talking about battleships and so on. And besides, there is no water in any of the maps anyway.
I also like the secret(s). If you find more than this one, please post a review. If you click on the fish in the credits about 25 times (or more, I'm not sure) it explodes and you hear singing.
One thing about this game however, is that it is rather difficult. The easiest missions are the "Seek and Destroy" missions. The hardest one's are escort missions and defence missions.
Overall this game is totally awsome and I hope you buy it so that you can expierience the shocking amazingness of this great game.

I waited 8 weeks for amazon to ship this title, the whole time the web site said 2-3 days - it was never in stock at all. Multiple phone calls multiple email and they still have not updated the web page. amazon gets lowest marks possible.
But good game...

One of the most underrated PC games there is, Ground Control is the fast-paced strategy game that takes out the focus on managing an economy and defending a base and puts emphasis on organized, squad-based warfare. WarCraft III emulates this game, but fails to do so in many respects. GC had WC3's graphics nearly 3 years before it did, boasted a much better camera control system and combat which outweighs anything in any other strategy game I've ever seen. In reality, comparing GC to most other strategy games is to compare apples with oranges, putting GC in a genre of its own. For the gamer who enjoys non-stop, visually impressive strategy with a unique game dynamic of its own, Ground Control is a must-have.

I loved the demo. I just had to get the real game, so I ordered it off of AMAZON for "a good price". I was amazed. Alright, so it's the end of the third world war and their are two sides, the Crayven corporation and the Religious order of the "new dawn" (sounds like something out od Delta Force Landwarrior) You start by playing the Crayven people. You step into the shoes, or should I say boots of Major Sarah Parker. You get to read a biography about her in the manual. The Crayvens have "Terradynes" (basically a tank with treads) and "Aerodynes" (planes.) The new dawn people have "Hoverdynes" or hover tanks and Aerodynes. The briefings on my part are not so good however. Even if I have a 1.7 gig computer and 256 mb of RAM, the talking doesn't work. For example, I was listening to a briefing and when Parker spoke I heard "At all costs?, At all costs?, At all costs?, the lines seem to repeat themselves! Anyway, that's just a precaution, the rest of the game rocks. There is no resource gathering or building. You command customizable squads and everything is 3-d. You can zoom and rotate around your units. For 9 bucks, it's a great game! Buy it on AMAZON today!

This game is a great game that does NOT burden the player with the boring and typical resource collecting and technology trees of other games. In each scenario you have a certain number of units at a certain strength; you have some ability to repair damage, but once your men die, they are gone for the scenario, and in campaigns, have to be replaced by less experienced (effective) new units. This game was easy to learn, but hard to get really good at, which is another good point about it.

Ground control was a truly amazing game.
Overview:
Two groups, the government millitairy and religious cult that saved a large part of the population of the world during a nuclear war. Alien artifacts are later discovered and you must fight the religious group to reclaim them. The religious group talks about them as some sort of "god's cleansing". The plot is very interesting, although involving the overused 'alien artifacts on earth'.
Here is a rating of this game on five characteristics.
Mechanics and Physics: 4/5
Graphics: 5/5
Sound and Music: 5/5
Difficulty: 5/5
Multi-Play: 5/5
Customation: 4/5
The mechanics are near perfect. Sometimes, you will see some terrain that seems to be of passable but really isn't. Also, a large part of the game is positioning your units so the artillery or weak units don't get attacked or hiding spies where they can't be seen. Scouts/spies are often hard to hide, even when you hide them in a forest on top of a hill. The easiest way to position them is below eye level in a valley or behind a hill.
The graphics are astounding. From the blasts of the infantry to the beams of the hovercraft, you will find yourself completely lost in it. Bombers have nice fuzzy plasma bombs and the artillery makes great blasts. Also, you can heal units and even the healing 'beam' looks great.
Sounds and music are average, nothing special... but none of them are even partially annoying.
The game is relatively difficult. The easiest missions consist of seeking and destroying. Protecting units and defending areas are often harder, providing that you can't step back and recoup from the battles. No problems in this section.
The multi player is great fun. The objective is to destroy the enemy APC or commanding unit. Reinforcements are delivered every so often. There are also maps that have plots and pre-configured scripts for variations on play.
Lastly, the game is greatly configureable. You can make maps, which account for much of the customization. If you are expecting customization on Unreal Tournament's level, don't look here. The editor is above average and is a great feature.
Hopefully this review helps you lean favorably towards buying this game.

Just bought the game, and have to say I like it. It isn't a traditional RTS, as you have no economy, gather no resources, and build no buildings or units. Instead, you just start with some units, and go kill stuff. It's pretty straightforward.
Before each mission, you can customise your squads and dropships however you like. You have several basic types of unit:
infantry
tank ("terradyne")
floaty tank ("hoverdyne")
flying thing ("aerodyne")
and heavy weapon ("rocket terradyne", Anti-Air, Artillery)
Each of these units comes in several flavors, such as "scout" "medium" "heavy." You can further customise each squad as "Offensive" "Speed" "Defensive" or "Balanced." Defensive means the squad is equipped with additional armor, etc.
The in game controls are simple. The camera is easy to control (arrow keys to move, mouse to look around, pgup and pgdown do zoom in/out.) You kill stuff. Simple, relatively fast gameplay. You can find it cheap, and with the settings cranked up, it still looks good. All you could ask for from ten dollars worth of game.
Blow the dust off and enjoy Ground Control again

I just recently found an old PC Gamer magazine demo disc with Ground Control on it. I loaded it up and played the 3 level demo and was hooked. I purchased the full version and was so sorry that this one passed me by when it was "new". The camera control and angles are so awsome and extremely easy to use, perhaps a tip some of the other design houses could incorporate. The story is good and just when you think it's the same old run of the mill plot it will throw you a curve and just have you enjoying it even more. The unit control is very interesting, being that you control squads not just one person or vehicle at a time. I guess to sum it all up, this is just a great RTS and right now be it that it is one of the old ones... Getting a good new game is fine, re-disovering a great old one is even better.
