Good, but not as good as 7

This game is really good. Has a excellent story-line (which has made the Final Fantasy series so famous). Over all I give the game four stars, the fifth star I gave because it comes with a seperate window program called, "Chocobo World". They have FF8 for the American Playstation but they do not have Chocobo World (it is, however, sold for playstation in Japan). That is why, in this case, it is better to buy the P.C. version. If you're wondering what Chocobo World is, Chocobo world is a "gigapet" type game in which is in a small window so you can play it even when your online!A bonus you get from Chocobo world is you can find items in it that you can't get in FF8! But the downside is that it could take a while. Well, I hoped this review helped you. And go ahead and buy it, it's worth every penny!

A terrible, terrible port...

This game is good on the PSX, but it can't even compare on the PC...reasons:

1. Bad control set-up and no mouse 2. Ported fonts...blurry and blocky 3. Blurry backgrounds 4. Blocky graphics requiring a high memory video card 5. Terrible MIDI music... 6. Boring, linear gameplay compared to other PC RPGs

The PSX version has none of these flaws...

With that said though, this game is still somewhat fun. Worth a try, but PC RPGs are so much better than this port.

1.) WHY THIS GAME IS INFERIOR TO PSX VER.

ok, not that i liked the psx version, but i played it, and this verison is far worse. The backgrounds, characters, items, menus, all look like a poverished 3rd world country version of the original. Id bet my life that ea did this to save money : they take the playstation's game, copy it verbatim, and created an illworking limited use playstation emulator. Thats why the graphics are soo bad. id bet my life

2.) why it is a stupid game to begin with a.) control, its obvious squaresoft tryed to create something more like a playable movie than the last ff. the controls and playability are even worse on the computer, and even worse still since ea took about 5 minutes to think the buttons through, and one more thing: CAN I PLEASE GET A MANUAL??!?!?! how the heII am i sposed to know what to do?

3.) ma beef wit EA

there is no email adress to be found on their webpage. i found it unbelievable too but you can go therir know and check. but dont just type ea.com that would be too easy! and dont call them its like 7 dollers a second go look in a rare manual you might have gotten in one game, and see how much it costs. when i finnally got a hold of them online (info@ea.com or something), they washed their hands of responsability and informed me the problem was with drivers. boycot all ea games.

A Good Series goes Swirling Down the Can

After the genius of FF6 (FF3 in America) and the brilliance and intrigue of FF7, this is EASILY the series' biggest letdown. Final Fantasy6 and 7 were succesful for many reasons, one of which was intriguing storyline and likeable characters, both of which the game fails at. After playing it for only a few minutes, you'll probably think or wish (as I did) the following: "The characters will all HAVE to become more likeable by the end". HA! They don't, and eventually I started hoping they'd all get in a fiery plane crash (or airship crash, whatever). Plus, there is virtually no need for money seeing as you armor etc. never goes beyond the clothes on your back. These factors and an ending that was apparantly slapped together by some programmers who were and just wanted to end this crap make this game the worst FF to date, though FF9 seems quite competitive in that category.

Good Story, Strange Battle System

I really like Final Fantasy VII. It had a very interesting story, an excellent battle system and great graphics. Final Fantasy VIII is not nearly as good. The storyline is good and I liked it, but the other things bring it down.

The Battle System is too strange for me. The whole drawing magic and GFs is confusing. The magic system should be simpler than that. There is hardly any character development either. The stories behind most of the minor characters is hardly even explained, other than that they all knew each other.

The graphics are very good and the cutscenes are excellent. There is no flaw there. There must have been a lot of work put into creating these cutscenes. Even on the PC version, they are crisp and clear.

Overall, it's an OK game but with flaws. Many people probably disagree, but this just was not a great Final Fantasy game.

Only for the storyline

FF8 is perhaps the most romantically-oriented game in the Final Fantasy series. Many have bought this game for that reason alone, setting aside the fact that all Final Fantasy fans will eventually buy any and all games in the series, regardless of reviews.

In general, the storyline is excellent in terms of character development. The characters come alive much more than they did in previous FFs, since each person's mannerisms are expressed in more detail through the way they stand, think, and talk. However, the planners were a little ambitious and go overboard on a few leaps they take in the storyline - at several points in the game the complexity of the storyline increases by several orders of magnitude all at once, with inadequate explanation (the last boss, for instance, appears essentially out of nowhere; although she technically affects the entire story you have absolutely no knowledge of her for most of the game)

From a technical standpoint, this game was already under-par when it was released, and as everyone knows, it only gets exponentially worse with time. This is not one of those classics like its predecessor FF7 or Chrono Trigger, where gameplay is enough to make up for dated graphics and sound.

Character development has nothing to do with building levels. Everything revolves around the notoriously aggravating 'junctioning' system, which involves hours of boredom spent 'drawing' spells from enemies (there is no 'mana' or 'MP' in this game). As you use spells, you will need to draw them again. Later in the game, the only significant source of damage comes from the main character's limit break, which can be used continuously because of a fundamental flaw in their limit break system, which is based not on how much damage you take, but your character's current hit points (the lower your health, the higher the chance your next attack will be a limit break).

The Guardian Forces (summon monsters for this game) have stunning animations, even for FF games (and I thought FF7 was impressive), but they are all rather lengthy and there is no way to shorten them. Also, the damage rapidly becomes insignificant after the first few hours of playing. What this means is that you'll hardly, if ever, summon them later in the game.

If you are not already a Final Fantasy fan, there is no reason to get this game. The graphics and sound are poor, the gameplay is annoying for all the wrong reasons, and since it is now 'rare', it costs ten times what it is worth.

This game is da best!

This game is mega cool, esp. on PS1 but on com itz cool too (esp. since i don't have a PS1...) If you like adventure games with a purpose and all, you'll love Final Fantasy VIII...It has a whole heap of animated movies in addition to the game play. Da nusic is cool, da graphics are cool, it's just all over GREAT!
Enjoy it if you get it!

I played this game for the first time on the Playstation console. It was my starting point to the FF series. I had alot of fun with this game and I was impressed with the large story that unveils over 40+ hours of game play. Now 5 years after I played the game on playstation I have started the series again on the PC. Just as it was 5 years ago the game is still just as fun as I remembered. The story draws a personality with the characters that you can lose yourself in. Excitement and, sadness to action and, drama, this game is number 1 in my heart. Most people, as said in previous reviews, love this game 100% or, hate it 100%. most who hate this game love FF7. I have not played FF7 all the way through (only first 5 minutes) but, this game is still my favorite. However, I would like to see FFX and FFX-2 on PC.

AWESOME GAME, Need I say more? Only bad thing is that you need a good graphics accelerator for this game to LOOK awesome...

this game spans 4 cd's. it stats off good but is vary deceaving. it has a poor system for battle. the system entails a GF-Gardian force system. much like that of a elemental calling. although it takes nothing from you hp or mp. infact you dont have magic points. any magic you heve is baught or drawm in battle from enemies.

i made it about the third cd and found myself draging through it. it lost all its intrest at this point. i took out the cd and put the game away.

the only good thing this game does now is collect dust so my baulders gate cd case stays nice.
