It could have been great, but...

EU2 could have been a great game, but if you enjoy playing online, don't even consider buying it! Due to the numerous bugs and lack of developer support, the multiplayer function is just useless. Sweden-based developer Paradox does not seem to be working on a patch that would fix the problem. This is terribly frustrating, since such a game would really reach a new dimension by introducing decent multiplayer capabilities.

Plus if you have Windows XP, you won't be able to see the cinematics due to a compatibility problem.

I'm fed up with these developers or publishers promising things to convince you to buy their products, and not delivering these things. I just cannot imagine what it would give if drugs or car companies did the same.

One of the most boring games made after 2000!!

I was hoping for another great stratagy game that I could add to my large collection of PC games. I usually love Stratagey games, but this game is an exception. The game is very buggy and feels cheesy. For example, when you try to click on something, it takes many clicks before it gets the messgage. And no it isn't lag.

I forced myself to play it for several hours thinking that if I gave it a chance, I'd learn to like it, but I just hated it more an more with every waking moment. This game reminds me of a much downgraded civilization 2. Trust me. There a many good stratagey games out there. This just isn't one of them.

The best ever!

This is the most fun I have ever had with a PC game! The control is outstanding, the options endless, and the attention to historical detail is remarkable. Forget CivIII and the rest, the is THE strategy game to have.

Best RTS game ever

The best REal Time StrateGy EvER created by men till 2002. It has some bugs, but with the new patches, those are forgotten.
Interesting and very very educative

When you play the game on and on and on and on.. the musics start to repeat itself and gets boring.. all my co-workers actually loved the musics when they heard it for the first time but after months of continious play i had to put on a headphone.
The best game i have ever played so far...looking forward for EU3 and hopefully the crusades against the Turks will slow down a little..

Not Bad!

You gotta like this game if you have played Europa Universalis I. It isn't much different but still interesting and time passing game. Only drawback is that there no real enhacements for the game, example you find difficulty to find a provision on the map.

Wunderbar

If you thought there would never be a RST game that combines historical accuracy with accumen and excellent gameplay, think again. The game is challenging in its own right and allows you as the player to think about and to control foreign and domestic policies of the country you choose to be.As such you'll find yourself quickly addicted to empire building, sending diplomatic envoys to foreign governments, promoting colonization & religous conversion abroad, establishing trade agreements with foreign countries, promoting conquest, warfare and technological developments. In this regard you also should bear in mind that you as the prime minister of your country, are accountable to the monarch, and therefore you better avoid policy decisions which may lead to political instability (i.e.costly wars, challenging very powerful countries, or neglecting diplomatic relations / alliances as such), otherwise your government falls. The game is great in all respects, and I highly recommend it. I think it is absolutely great and realistic because of the control you can excert over foreign policy making (war and peace, alliances), thereby shaping the faith of your country. Further, you can change the course of 400 years of history (1420-18.20)by playing non-European countries, which may instead end up dominating the globe. All in all tres fantastique.

Historical accuracy, yet open-ended game

First of all, this game has a steeper learning curve than most strategy games, but it is worth it. To overcome the initial frustration, I had to read the manual and some online resources. There is a friendly, loyal community at the Paradox Interactive's forum that can help.
Once you get the grips of it (read the manual), the game has a lot to offer. It has an amazing amount of historical detail, especially for little-known places and people of the medieval times and a very complex gameplay model that offers a convincing historical simulation. Yet, if you are willing and capable you can lead the world to un-historical situations, leading minor nations to become empires. A typical favourite for example is to raise the Byzantine Empire from its deathbed to survival, or even leading superpower. The AI is very good and can handle diverse scenarios and strategies, from colonisation to unifications. In a single game you can become trading power, a military powerhouse, an Empire, but if you are too successful in expanding, the world might see you as a global threat and then you will face huge alliances against you. That last feature preserves a challenging aspect even later in the game.

Compared to other Paradox games, it is easier to learn than Victoria and harder than Hearts of Iron. It is more deterministic than Crusader Kings and less than Victoria. It has seen several patches that assure a balanced game. Along with Hearts of Iron it is the most popular in forum posts and After-Action-Reports (AAR).

Note: In January 2007 Europa Universalis 3 is getting released, which is going to cover more or less the same timeline and is expected to have improvements and innovations on the existing model.
