Better than Dune 2000 by far thankfully! =)

This is a pretty good game, especially if you are a Dune fan. They tried pretty hard to add in stuff from the books, most of the time they do a good job. The thing I (still) don't like is the inability to build two units at the same time if you have two of the same buildings (3 if you have, etc.). You were able to do that in Dune II, but Westwood took that away starting with C&C and never put it back in. Overall, not a bad RTS; I am not sad I bought this.

By far the best RTS game around!

I picked up this game when I saw it on sale. I liked Dune 2000, though it wasn't that great. This gamer however, broke the mold. I have never seen a cooler real time strategy then this game. The graphics are incredible, the story is cool, the units are sweet, and the videos rock.

This game would be fun.. if I could play it...

I'm sure this game would be great, if it would run on my computer. I have windows ME, a pentium 4 1.7, a geforce 3, 256 ram, sblive, latest drivers... and for some reason, westwood (the developer) couldnt bother to test it on a new system? I've tried costumer support, no help there, but i did discover pleanty of other problems other people have had with the game. Also, the minimun requierments are far short of what you really need, this game requires a lot more then they say, not to mention that if you have an athlon processor, it wont run. And system requirements are the irony where my problem lies with this game.. because I have one of the only systems that would run the game in all its visual glory.

Too slow and clunky

Being a hard-core C&C/RE fan, I was excited to pick up Emperor this weekend. But after installing and playing it, I found it to be way too slow and clunky. I have a decent PC - PIII 750 128 megs etc. but I found the interface slow to use, the screen very slow to scroll, and the missions took forever to load. I found myself wanting to load up RE2 and play it. Maybe the upgrades will speed up the game to be playable, until then I am back on RE2.

Dune II gets a serious overhaul !

This game has all the flavor of the original Dune II, but the graphics are a lot nicer. As in the original Dune II you can pick from one of the three houses for the campaign; Atredies, Ordos, or Harkonnen's. This time, though, you can pick up unique troops depending on what subhouses you ally with as you go through the campaign. They've also added (I don't remember if the original had this) multiplayer capabilities.

For this game it does feel like they took the original game added a lot more depth (including many cinematic clips) and alot better graphics!! If you liked the original you'll love this remake.

FYI: They also made the worms a whole lot bigger :).

RTS has a bad rap.

RTS games have developed this bad rap of all of them basically being the same game. I think this is why some reviewers are so hard on RTS games, even great ones like Dune. The Graphics are beautiful, the game is not linear and has an amazing RISK style structure. You don't feel like your playing out a story, but controlling a storyline yourself. Plus with 50+ missions per side you are bound to have enough replay value to justify the price.

Low artificial intelligence drags it down.

I like a lot of Westwood's work (especially Dune-themed stuff), but I wish they'd focus a bit more on A.I for once. With decent A.I., this game could easily have been worth 4 or 5 stars. A.I. in RTS games in general really needs a breakthrough soon, but in Emperor, it's just too lacking. Come on...it's 2001. Let's start seeing some intelligent computer opposition, Westwood.
A decent game, but could and should have been so much more.

Westwood is back on top

The game that made RTS is back. After the dissappointing remake Dune 2000, Westwood strikes back with the 3D RTS. The amazing blend of the old RTS style that has made Westwood so great with the new 3D engine has created a world that makes Force Commander look like a child's toy. Oh, how far we have come since Dune 2 was released in 1992. If you like RTS games, this one must be at the top of your list. It is like nothing I have seen before and more. It is an epic game of 4 cds and an outstanding plot. RTS is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emperor - THAT is the directive!

As a game that was declared as "the most dangerous opponent to War Craft III" (at least in my part of the world) Emperor hardly lives up to the expectations.

A much better version of the classic Dune II, with much improved graphics, new and extremly cool units and some new concepts (such as the extended use of minor houses) - Emperor is still Dune II in a new suit. The story is quite boring (If I`ll hear the Ordos Mentat saying one more time: "That is the directive I will explode! :)))) and the control system is much the same as the older Dune II.
Still, for the RTS lovers, especially for the Dune universe fans - it`s a good choice.

p.s. Try playing it while reading one of the Dune novels....it sure enhances the experience......

GOOD RTS game, tons of gameplay

I enjoyed playing this game, its right up your alley if you enjoy the Command and Conquer series of games. Its pretty much like C&C except for the science fiction inspired setting and technology (the game is inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune universe). There is a ton of gameplay here, with dozens of missions you can play for each of the three houses in the game.

The 3-D engine is well implemented, the graphics are well done and look great with a good video card (I have a GE Force 3), though I found that I didn't want to change my battlefield perspective very much as this could become confusing. My favorite animation was of one of the huge sandworms crashing up though the sand and gobbling up a pack of units and men. The cut scenes are very well done and add quite a bit to making the game world and the scenarios seem believable. The missions do become repetitive, however, and I found that I could apply the same tactic over and over and win the mission (there was only one mission I lost and this was because of some bug in the game that caused my spice harvesters to refuse to begin harvesting spice, which you need for money to build stuff). I found that with most missions I could just build up my base's defenses and then build up an air force large enough to bomb the enemy's base to the ground. I still found most of the missions enjoyable, but the designers could have put more thought into mission design.

All in all, though, if you enjoy the Command and Conquer series and enjoy burning and salting the enemy's base, then this game is for you.
