Lack of quality puzzles

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

Beyond Atlantis is a game in the spirit of Myst and Riven. Unfortunately, Beyond Atlantis doesn't have what it takes to make a great game. While the graphics are very good (I won't say breathtaking, because they weren't quite that good) what makes or breaks this sort of game is the puzzles, and the puzzles in Beyond Atlantis are horrible. They are mostly inventory-based (i.e., you have jump through some hoops to get an object that allows you to activate something or talk to somebody.) However, the puzzles just aren't logical. For example, why does one character only speak incoherently until I bring him a particular slab of rock? Or why does clicking on some pictures on the wall result in the wall giving me a pearl? This is never explained. Furthermore, there is no continuity in the game--you never have any idea what you are really trying to accomplish. Now, there are some positive aspects to the game (very nice graphics, and a couple of good puzzles) but I suggest that if you play this game, keep a hint manual or a walkthrough handy, because without it the only way you will beat the game is just through dumb luck...

A beautiful challenge, but often frustrating

Beyond Atlantis is a wonderfully animated game and a must for anyone that loves puzzles. The colors and video sequences are beautiful and the characters have interesting though often one-sided personalities.
I bought the game for the similarities it had to Myst and found that it was not a bad buy. Atlantis 2 is quite similar to the original Myst but not as in depth (character wise) as Myst 2 and 3. The puzzles themselves are not a great challenge, but the steps to get to them make up for their shortcomings. Overall, the major shortcoming of the game is the lack of information. Often you are unsure of what you need for a puzzle or why you need to complete it other that to beat the game. Few clues are given so a good hint site is recommended; however, don't just for help at the first sign of trouble. The game is made to be able to look 360 degrees and up to the sky and to the ground and the makers expect you to use this ability. Before you run to the walkthrough, look around, search the ground, and ask the characters about EVERYTHIING!
Overall, this game is great for the puzzle person that doesn't mind some lack in character development. The game will take time but is definitely a come-back-for-more type of game. The graphics and legend lore are wonderful. Finally, as an individual who has played through the game three times, I can say the game is worth it.

Beyond Atlantis

I loved the music in this game. As far as the game play goes you actually learn a little cultural history while at the same time having fun. The beaurocratic minitar is rather amusing in his lackluster attitude towards visitors to Hell. However, I found the constant motion of some of the charactors while speaking to be anoying.

Really great game

This was a great game in almost all aspects...great cinematography, great music and great concept. You not only get to explore the five worlds, but you actually learn some facts while you're doing it. For example, the Maya puzzle is based on the actual Maya counting system. Sometimes you needed a little prompt to get you going on the puzzles, but they weren't so difficult that you couldn't figure them out. Definately a great game, along the lines of Myst but much more logical than some of the crazy things they expected you to figure out in Myst!

Mixed Bag

This game has spectacular graphics---makes playing it [and finishing it] worthwhile. But the navigation is difficult and clues [?] are frequently vague. A lot of trial & error solutions.

Beyond Atlantis 1 and 2 are the best ever graphic adventures

It is not possible here to describe how great Beyond Atlantis 1 and 2 are, but let's just say that I have been buying everything around and these adventures beat everything else. The music alone for a start is delightful, the graphics really bring you to Atlantis and new universes, the realism and story lines are really impressive. It is very simple, you only wish to live in the game and forget going to work.

Enjoyable, though imperfect game offers B-movie adventure

Overall, this game is one of the most compelling adventure games I have played! It is a B-movie reset as a game, with a bit of new age mysticism thrown in. It features beatiful movies and a very nice soundtrack.

Occasionally, the game pace was a little too slow for me. Perhaps getting stuck was a result of my being a PC game newbie, and not knowing the conventions. Overall, I think a few more clues were in order in several spots. Regardless of the reason, I simply solved the problem by resorting to online cheats when experimentation was just too tiresome.

Despite its flaws, it held my interest over several weeks. I recommend it.

so confused

Beginning, I really liked this game. But towards Ireland and Tibet I became so puzzled and frusturated over the clues. Also my computer is too high tech so I can't enjoy the mini movies in each scene. The animation is truly breathtaking but how could anyone say they enjoy this when they don't get the full gamer experience and weird clues that I've totally given up on...

An "E" Rating?

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

I found this to be an average puzzle-solving adventure game, much like many of the other games of the same caliber that are out there. I did, however, question the rating on the game. The game holds an "E" rating which states that it is suitable for any person age 6 and older. I believe that a young child would not be able to solve many of the puzzles and challenges in the game, unless they purchased a cheat book or went on the internet (like I did) to get hints for the puzzles. Plus, some of the creatures encountered in the game may frighten younger audiences, and a scantily-clad priestess in the Maya scene may not be suitable for younger eyes. You can use your discretion on this, but I gave the game a two-star rating.

Ugh - don't do it

This game was so icky I didn't even finish it. The rendered characters all appeared to have some sort of unhealthy skin condition, and tended to rock back and forth while delivering their bad voice bits. The locations were pretty, but the node-to-node navigation was extremely frustrating. Some of the puzzles weren't too bad, but others were pretty far fetched. Between the creepy characters, the dizzying navigation and the inane puzzles, I just couldn't bring myself to continue.
