Decent game

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 0 / 0

This game is pretty difficult, there are no cheats if you need help, or any trainers that I could find that worked. You can pick a couple different paths from the beginning of the game, good or evil, different clans depending on whether you slaughter or help some villagers being attacked in the first mission. It takes a different approach to training, you take peasants and send them into buildings to get skills and then those troops can go into other buildings to train into more advanced soldiers. You only get so many peasents at a time, they build slowly automatically. You harvest water, and rice to build troops.

Fun Revolutionary Game!

This game is WAY FUN! It's different than a lot of other strategy games because you can train each unit into something else, or just augment it with special powers, which is ESPECIALLY revolutionary. I would recomend this game to ANYONE who likes PC Strategy games just because of the new way of playing a strategy game that you encounter. Instead of turning the units out cookie cutter style, it makes you realize that they are little pseudo-people who require different types of training.

May favorite units were the Werewolves and the Master Warlocks. I subtracted a star because I thought if could've been cooler if each unit had an experience level, and it could advance into something stronger, like for Werewolves it could've been SilverBack Werewolf, then BloodFang Werewolf or something, you know?

Anyways, the game pretty much ROCKS!

the most realistic a game can get

unlike other strategy games which are set in the future, this is set in the past where swords were used and guns were only in the musket stage. in skrimish games you start out with a peasant, who is the backbone of any army. peasants either collect water or rice (which is the monetary units in this game), build and repair buildings, or train to become a soldier. unlike other strategy games there is a limit to the number of units you can have. they are either 20, 30, or 40 at maximum. since the number of units you can build is limited, you need to decide how which troops are devoted to economy or combat. you don't "build units", you train them in buildings such as dojos, target ranges, etc. a great game overall and one of the few strategy games that actually REQUIRE usage of your brain. good game at good bargain, but the detail of the units is horrible (their faces from the side are shaped like quarter-circles so their face is flat with no moving features)

A near-perfect game

I'm not a strategy gamer per se -- I enjoy *some* strategy games, but also play games from other genres. So I don't approach this game the same way someone who has mastered Warcraft does.

I like this game for several reasons. First, it isn't difficult to pick up; the training missions teach you how to play the game in a short amount of time. Second, while learning the game is simple, there is plenty of depth and strategy to be found. I like the idea of "unit alchemy", where different units can be trained in other skills and become other units. But training all of your units to the highest attainable type is NOT the way to win -- you must balance your troop types. Third, I like the asian setting and themes (the main menu even displays the 5 elements of traditional chinese medicine and philosophy). Fourth, though challenging, the game is not overly difficult or too easy.

A great game. I wish they'd make a "Battle Realms 2". I have not tried the "Winter Of The Wolf" expansion, but have heard that it was not nearly as good as the original game.

Modern software

Terrain Graphics and Unit movement Ai are good, but that is about it. The concept of unit alchemy, which is where a unit trains in one building and then another to become more powerful is fairly unique but little else is offered. UNit graphics and animations are dull and uninspired. The game has bugs and little balance. The sound and music are pathetic albeit amusing from time to time. The interface is a crime against gamers. There is a fourty unit population limit and the game grates along slowly anyway. Players are limited to four towers, which are far from impressive. Battle gear and other upgrades can be aquires just like unit alchemy, but fail to make up for the glaring shortcomings of this game.
Overall Reveiw. 2 Stars and a waste of money. Buy Warlords Battlecry 1 or 2.

Fun, but repetitive

This game is pretty fun, but there is little variety. I haven't finished the game, but so far, every level is just building up enough forces and wiping out the enemy. This is like Command and Conquer, only the natural resources are unlimited (rice keeps growing, water keeps flowing) and the number of units you can have is limited. In each level, you can only have a certain number of men, around 20 or 30 so far. So it's difficult to have enough men defending the village and still have a large enough attack force. That may increase the challenge, but it is frustrating. It is more involved, too. You have to activate abilities for them to do anything, so you have to watch the fight and use the abilities at the appropriate time. In C&C, it was more getting together a large force and just leaving them to it, or going by stealth and capturing buildings in the enemy base. A problem is that units sometimes don't react very quickly. Some abilities cause this, but they also do it without being afflicted by anything. Also, it allows you to choose to save peasants from tyranny or force them to submit to your will at the beginning. But that seemed to be the only time, which disappointed me. Battle realms is fun, but only some of the time. It doesn't require much attention and can get old quickly. It's cheap, so give it a try.

A great alternative to Warcraft

Okay, so you like Warcraft. No wait, you love Warcraft. You just can't help but smile with glee as you see your initial group of little peons turn into a massive army. You are a pro at these Real Time Strategy (RTS) games. You know all the strategies. If that is so, this is game worth looking, especially at the low prices selling nowadays.

If you are not a real big fan of this genre, like me, it's still worth looking at considering the price. I highly recommend you download the demo (it's out there somewhere). It has the tutorial, so you don't really need the manual, and it has some skirmishes so you can see if you're really into this. Try it out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game, even though I think it's fairly difficult for me. I don't have the fast clicking fingers and the fast acting brain that some of the my friends have. The idea is that you choose among 4 different clans, each having it's unique units and heros. There are a lot of oriental themes here, like geisha's, monks, and samurai's. So it's a welcome change from the fantasy-style RTS. But like any other RTS game, the premises is still the same - to survive while wiping out your opponents.

All the well-known tactics in RTS will work in this game, so if you're a pro, you'll excel in the skirmishes. You can do the infamous "rush" (very early rush attacks to cripple opponents); or the Zerglings-style tactics (Starcrafts players should know this); or the blitzkrieg assault (remember to save the game before doing it). There are many ways to win the game and many different variation to make the game fun.

The computer AI is pretty smart, especially in large maps. It knows how to use decoys, stealth and multi-directional attacks. Graphics is okay, a lot of vibrant colors, but some of the buildings look too alike that I don't know which is which. Character animation is smooth, but battles can be a bit of a frenzy. Too many times I don't know what is going on until it's too late, but that is the nature of RTS. My biggest gripe about the game is that a (strategic) retreat is too hard to pull off. Too many times, the characters have a "battle to the death" mentality (probably following the samurai's honor code). Otherwise, this game is great and a worthy addition in your RTS library.

I have owned this game since it came out. That's around 3 years. This game is not worth the money. I, like many, was very excited about the game when I first got it. I will admit the game is unique, but gets very boring very quickly.

Grapics/Sound - The graphics are not far from perfect. Awesome graphics. Some very realistic and well-recorded sounds accompany the fighting/actions. The voices, however, sound like hobos [paid a small amount] to do stereotypical anime and immigrant imitations. he background music is pretty well, too.

Gameplay - As I said, the gameplay is uniqe, yet bad. Rather than constructing a building that pumps out a type of unit one at a time and whenever you want, you train a peasant from your "Peasant Hut" in the building. There's close-combat training, ranged, and magical/chemical. There are also a few places allowing you to teach the units abilites or give them items, limited to one. That's basically the bare-bone facts that all clans share. There is the good-hearted averaged out "Dragon Clan", the evil counter-parting "Serpent Clan, the stone-age brutes "Wolf Clan", and its slave masters, the dark "Lotus Clan". They all have a large and very differing vary of units, abilities, and way of living itself. Only two resources exist, rice and water. You must also water the rice fields to grow back harvested plants. The construction is painfully slow, yet the combat faster than the blink of an eye. As well as horrible AI and campaign.

Conclusion - When people get the game and play it for five minutes and review it. But the truth is, you'll wear it out in 2 weels still trying to beat the third mission of the campaign. And the fact that no one is ever on-line since the producers never advertise their games, you're limited to playing the brain-damaged AI...

Challenging, Addictive, and Extremely FUN to play

A combination of good graphics and well-defined, cool-looking characters -- I'd say better than WarCraft III. Creative Japanese theme... you harvest rice and collect water as resources.

Has MANY well-thought of features and game-play details. For example:
Peasants gather resources faster if you place one of the Masters in the ricefield, or a Kabuki warrior (historically Japanese entertainer).

Every character has multiple moves and circle around each other during battle -- unlike WC3 -- this gives a very fluid feel to the fights.

Learning curve is low as everything operates on mouse with few keyboard shortcuts to remember.. WITHOUT sacrificing variety of possible strategies. Basically User Friendly interface.

So let's pose the question: Which of the following is most interesting in Battle Realms...
- visual effects
- simplicity of the gameplay
- variety of strategies that are available
- online play
- story line

Answer: YES!
If you like RTS, you'll enjoy this one...There's a reason it's got nearly 5 stars with close to 50(!) reviews~

One IMPORTANT thing... download the BattlePacks (patches)...BattlePack3 makes it so MUCH more challenging.
