Not your father's RTS

Very different and very fun. Don't play this game with a mind jaded by years of Age of Empires and Starcraft. It's a fun, interesting game that's not for the micromanager. It looks beautiful and plays fast and chaotic. Gets better with every Battle Pack.

Wow. Battle Realms is the most beautiful and innovative RTS I have ever seen.

A lot of the negative reviews written here are written out of ignorance, but not due to the authors' faults. There is an incredible amount of depth to the game Different amage types, vulnerability to certain damage, innate abilities (e.g. your hero can raise the stats of nearby units) all need to be taken into account. . .but the tutorial does not cover all of these aspects of the game, which is a shame.

I myself began to feel frustrated with this game, but after reading some of the information on the Battle Realms web site I finally figured out that I simply didn't know enough about the game to strategize effectively.

The second patch has already been released (battle pack 2) which fixes most of the bugs, and with information gleaned from the official web site I find the game much more enjoyable. For example. . .if you select your own unit, and hover your cursor over an enemy unit, the cursor will change colors to indicate how effective your unit is against the enemy unit! Brown is low damage, silver is medium, and gold is high. Too bad I found this out three months after purchasing the game.

It's a shame that the manual and tutorial do not go into enough depth, because it looks like a lot of people got frustrated with the game before learning all the aspects of it. Still, it is an excellent game and worth learning.

Excellent, Innovative, Thrilling...

I've been gaming for about 15 years, and I can honestly say that I've never played a game like this before.

Battle Realms brings some new and exciting concepts into the RTS genre. Those of you who enjoy RTS games, but also enjoy adventure games will probably LOVE Battle Realms. Rather than building massive armies of the same boring "micro-machine-looking" units, you build armies out of more unique units. Different units can train in different manners, and gain different abilities. You are able to summon heros, which are generally extra powerful units in some way. Whether it be a special ability in a class of its own, or simply great strength and agility. There's a great diversity of Units in this game, without being tediously and excessively complex.

I'm a gamer who has always stuck to ONE game at a time. I like to focus because I belong to a gaming team. However, Battle Realms has grabbed me by the shirt, and held my attention surprisingly well. It's even spreading to my online-gaming teammates! We're playing battle realms together, both against each other, and together against computer AI.

If you're looking for a game that will keep you excited and interested, check out Battle Realms. I'm glad I tried it, and so are several of my friends. Nothing short of 5 stars.

Battle Realm supports a very innovative engine with superb gameplay. For an RTS, it gives intricate gameplay and an in-depth and downright interesting storyline. A variety of strategy can be formulated from the unit chemistry making 3rd tier units counterable with 1st or 2nd tier units and keeping the balance. Instead of most RTS games that immitates other earlier RTS games, BR innovated it and gave us a beautiful games from the outside to the inside.

I think liquid did a hell of a Job with this great game, it has innovation, great graphics, lovely songs and a superb kung fu style in battles.. on the strategy i think a mountain of books couldnt contain them all, everything can help you overcome your enemies Location, wheater, horses, rocks, forest, fire, battle gears. You can use complex or simple strategies to achieve your goal i think is one of the fastest RTS ever and requires a sharp mind, fast thinking to beat your opponents!! Forget about WC3 this is the Best RTS ever

Battle Realms is a breath of fresh air, in a often innovation-less genre. Most Strategy games are just copied of other Strategy games.

But Liquid has shown a good bit of innovation here. Its not as innovative as, say, Sacrifice. But its a lot more different than the average C&C/WC clone. You start out with only one unit, the lowly Peasant. They auto-generate from Peasant huts, slowly take longer to come out. You then 'train' the units, sending them into one of four training buildings.

But there are more than four units, three of the four builds(The non-Healer producing buildings) can have the units they make cross-train. For example, a Serpent Musketeer produced from the Alchemists Hut, can train in a Tavern and become a Raider. There are four tier one units, counting Healers. Then you have three tier two units(Trained twice). And finally you have one tier three unit, who has trained three times.

However, these tier three units are not bread and butter. The correct tier on unit can beat him one on one.

Every unit has an enemy unit(More often units) that they can kill one on one, and they have their counters. So, you can't build a army of Samurai or Ronin and expect to win. A unit, no matter how powerfull, is no good against a enemy that has good armour against his attacks.

There are four races, which are fairly unique. And there is also 'Battle Gear' for units. Like a special ability. Most units can have two, for instance the Serpent Musketeer can have Sniper Scope, long ranged with high damage(Though once again, if the unit resists that damage type, its useless) or Blast Shot, which busts buildings to bits. This add variety to units that might otherwise be ignore. A Crossbowman is fairly useless against a lot of units, but their Weakness bolt can turn the tide of battle.

Unit upgrades are bought with something other than rice and water(the normal resources used). They are bought with Yin/Yang. To get Yin/Yang, you must engage the enemy. This allows the aggressor to have an edge on someone who dits in their base. Yin/Yang is also used to buy Zen Master, or heros. If they die, fear not. They can be bought back, after a period of time.

If you are still reading, stop and buy this game!

Battle realms for the PC is a work of tactical masterpiece. The graphics are the best i have ever seen in a strategy game. The variety in the 4 clans is really cool, offering the best and most differed gaming experiances since Starcraft. The multiplayer leaves a little to be desired, but if you are not a huge multiplayer and enjoy a little bit of point and click gaming, Battle realms is a breath of fresh air on the PC and over all, is hugely enjoyable and alot of fun.

the most realistic a game can get

unlike other strategy games which are set in the future, this is set in the past where swords were used and guns were only in the musket stage. in skrimish games you start out with a peasant, who is the backbone of any army. peasants either collect water or rice (which is the monetary units in this game), build and repair buildings, or train to become a soldier. unlike other strategy games there is a limit to the number of units you can have. they are either 20, 30, or 40 at maximum. since the number of units you can build is limited, you need to decide how which troops are devoted to economy or combat. you don't "build units", you train them in buildings such as dojos, target ranges, etc. a great game overall and one of the few strategy games that actually REQUIRE usage of your brain. good game at good bargain, but the detail of the units is horrible (their faces from the side are shaped like quarter-circles so their face is flat with no moving features)

Fun Revolutionary Game!

This game is WAY FUN! It's different than a lot of other strategy games because you can train each unit into something else, or just augment it with special powers, which is ESPECIALLY revolutionary. I would recomend this game to ANYONE who likes PC Strategy games just because of the new way of playing a strategy game that you encounter. Instead of turning the units out cookie cutter style, it makes you realize that they are little pseudo-people who require different types of training.

May favorite units were the Werewolves and the Master Warlocks. I subtracted a star because I thought if could've been cooler if each unit had an experience level, and it could advance into something stronger, like for Werewolves it could've been SilverBack Werewolf, then BloodFang Werewolf or something, you know?

Anyways, the game pretty much ROCKS!
