Real adventure gamers Beware !!

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 9 / 22

Hey all you positive reviwers are you working for funcom!! you better stop tryin to fool the people by sayin how brilliant or stunning this game is. THIS IS A TERRIBLE GAME WITH A GOOD STORY !! thats all.

The story has some good ideas but isn't original unlike TLJ. Imperials and rebels from Star Wars, dreaming machines from The Matrix, spooky little girl from The Ring etc. etc. then some romance and some sacrifice.. cliche over cliche is hardly exciting but not too bad anyway.

The music is good except some crappy mtv style pre mature pop songs that simply dont fit the soul of the story at all if you ask me. Score is somewhere between Goldhenthal, Williams and Zimmer and has some spicy ethnic elements in it and sounds good but a bit limited.

Yeah right the game controls, camera angles and interface are really horrible thats for sure. But the main problem is the incredibelly dull and uninspired gameplay. This game is for idiots..There are no real puzzles to solve and you dont even have to search for an item, the game tells you where the item is than you run from location A to location B to use it or give it to another terribly animated dummy looking character thats it! than blah blah blah for minutes...Voice acting is maybe good but face animations are terrible. Plus, 99 percent of the playing time, you are running around and messin with god damned clumsy controls and interface !! I dont even want to mention about the pathetic action and sneaking elements.. total disaster.
And you call this crap brilliant because of its arguably good story and good voice acting, this is a game not an radio dramatization what about gameplay, where is intelligence? Bah!!

Simply, this game is a shamefull and unsucsesfull sequel of the best adventure game ever. if you like real adventure games and if you like the longest journey than you ll probably be dissapointed.

A great game for adventure fans.

I can honestly say that the story in this game is easily the most fun and imaginative I've seen. While it's not absolutely necessary to have played the original "The Longest Journey" it does make the story that much more interesting. Anyway, here's a quick breakdown (copied from my review on Gamespot):

Being a big fan of TLJ I have to say my review may be a little biased.

Gameplay:
There didn't seem to be any issues with the controls. The only problem I had with the gameplay was the fighting and sneaking. These two seemed to bring more frustration than fun. It was also a little on the short side clocking in at around 10 hours. The longest journey?

Graphics:
It ain't Oblivion, but it still looks great and should be playable across a wider variety of machines.

Sound:
Like it's predecessor the sounds, voice acting, and soundtrack are all way above par.

Value:
I would have to say there's more value for fans of the original than for newcomers.

Reviewer's Tilt:
It's "The Longest Journey". For me that makes it an instant classic. My thanks to Ragnar T?rnquist for a great game.

A frustrating journey of absolutely random nonsense

Definitely get this game if you are the type who enjoys random strange plot twists that have no bearing on actually accomplishing anything in the game. Stupid, stupid, fight system, and only 4 or 5 fights! Also, no questions raised by the plot are EVER RESOLVED!!!!!!! The story is compelling in it's strange plot twists, but overall it completely fails to deliver any sort of satisfaction through resolution or connection of said plot twists. The story seems promising, like "gosh this is confusing, but when it all gets tied together in the end it will be super awesome!" but, then the implied promise of the main character's actions actually leading anywhere dissolves into meaningless new questions imposed at the end. This game is unforgivable.

Dreamfall WAS the Longest Journey

This review is going to be short and to the point: This is the BEST game I ever played. The graphics were amazing. There are three characters that make up the story. The story line was wonderful. The interacting was precise and to the point. The game was Long. I liked the few puzzles. There were some fight scenes but was pretty easy to win the fights. Love the game; need I say more?

If you played TLJ, definitely play this

First off, if you want to play this without having playing TLJ first. Stop. Type "The Longest Journey" into the amazon search box. Click buy.

But for fans of the first game, this is definitely worth playing.

First the Negatives...
*The controls were annoying at times, especially for point-click adventure fans who are used to easy navigation. Once you get the hang of them though- you breeze through. I recommend inverting both cams, you'll understand what that means if you buy it and look in the options.
*There are a lot less puzzles in this one, a lot less combining of items (and items in general).. there are only 7 slots in the inventory and the new types of "puzzles" - fighting and sneaking leave some to be desired. Sneaking is pretty decent though there is one annoying puzzle that I used a walkthrough on because I was tired of it and just wanted to get to the next part of the game.
*In puzzles are a lot easier this time through. I only consulted a walkthrough twice, and only one of those times was really necessary... and by necessary I mean that I probably would have been stuck for maybe another 30 min to an hour without it.
*Fighting is badly designed... Apparently I heard it's not bad once you figure out how to dodge attacks, but I was never able to because I really hate situations in games when you feel rushed. Luckily, fights are usually avoidable- I think there were maybe 4 or 5 that you had to do. Also they are really easy.. I only lost a few times and that's because I'm horrible at it.
*There is a huuuuuge cliffhanger at the end- sorry if that spoils it for you at all.. but I don't think it would.

SO that was a lot of negatives... so you're probably wondering why I think you should still play it.
Positives:
*The STORY. The story is simply awesome and it's very well written and is a great continuation of the first game.
*The graphics. BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely stunning. Also, everything feels much more interactive than the first game because it's now in 3D. You feel like you're actually there...
*The voice acting. Superbly and realistically done.
*The detail. Yes you can still look at random things and hear descriptions. Also the story itself is quite intracite.
*Really the story is at the expense of the puzzles... adventure games are great but sometimes they just really aren't realistic. This game's puzzles are made to be intuitive and realistic for the player.

Lets be honest though... the game plays out more as an interactive movie a lot of times. There is a lot of dialogue and puzzles without a lot of parts.. but it's still completely worth your money- I promise. And as for the ending... the creator promised if for some reason he can't come out with a 3rd game- he'll write a book or graphic novel or some sort to satisfy fans.

it's all true, good and bad

Yes, what the other reviewers have said is all true. Sort of.

The user interface is non-intuitive and relatively hard to learn. Assuming you don't have a game pad (and I don't), you have to get used to using the "WASD" key method. Fortunately I've played a lot of Halo-PC, so I'm used to it. It took me several hours of gameplay before I had to stop concentrating on just walking the characters around -- but that did happen.

Also the fighting scenes are frustrating. Again, you can eventually learn the tricks, but I fail to understand the point of it. I dreaded every fighting scene as something to just get through. A couple of times you could avoid fights by using stealth, but there are several which are mandatory.

There are also some timed puzzles and some "duck and dodge" puzzles where you have to avoid wandering guards. I dreaded all of them, because they just were not very fun.

The puzzles are a mixed bag. Generally pretty intuitive, and usually reasonably integrated into the story. Not very hard, which I think is a good thing in a story-based game. This isn't a series of puzzles, it's an interactive story.

Occasionally there were some that were just frustrating, though. Perhaps the worst one was a puzzle where some creatures are using a combination lock to enter a locked door. It's not enough for the player to watch them and learn the combination. Instead, you have to use the game interface to make the character watch them. There's no clue that this has to be done -- it's only used this one time in the game.

Of the two aspects "interactive" and "story", it does much better on the story part. The characters are interesting, complex, and distinct. The plot is strong and also interesting. It retains the quality that The Longest Journey had of really being a novel rather than a game.

Which brings me to the "interactive" part, and the game falls down a little here. Both Stark and Arcadia are very interesting places, but we don't get to visit much of them. Generally we are limited to just a few streets, and most of the doors on the streets are closed to us. This serves the plot, but does not really serve the immersive feeling. For example, in one section you are stuck in the WATIcorp museum. Wandering around the exhibits is very fun. But this is a rare example of what could have been more common throughout the game.

But, overall, if you liked The Longest Journey would you like this game? Yes, I think you would. Because, like the original, the game has a heck of a story with very good characters. Overall, if you are looking for a game, there are better ones out there. If you are looking for novel in the form of a game, this is a great choice.

This isn't something that's going to appeal to the masses. Adventure games have fallen a long way, to be nothing more than a niche market that produces a lot of budget titles, mostly of middling quality.

That is so not the case with Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, a lushly produced follow-up to 1999's award-winning the Longest Journey. People can decry the combat system (play it was a gamepad, trust me, it makes it a lot easier and more enjoyable), but it's the depth of the story and the quality of the voice acting and visuals that are the draw here. I am not knocking the Prey, Doom3, and Halo fans out there, but this is a lot more my style.

This is a pretty amazing game, certainly one of the best adventure titles to come out in years, and a good indication that the genre isn't stuck to point-and-click watered-down MYST clones that have been populating the shelf space for years. For any serious adventure gamers, even distaste for the combat will be overcome by the story. For those that are more casual gamers, you may be surprised.

Spectacular!

The story of Dreamfall is fabulous and immersive! No senseless puzzles! The challenges require high curiosity and a little common sense to solve, but they aren't too easy. There are multiple choices for every action, some which seriously alter how you progress. Plenty of replay, I'm still finding new ways! The only downside is the lousy PC controls (hoping for a patch soon), but the Xbox is fine so I'm given this a top rating!

Don't bother buying this "game."

The puzzles are easy or non-existent, the plot is cluttered and confusing, the story does not resolve, all of the good guys die, and the bad guys win. The interface is very poor, and the game contains bad action and combat sequences that really detract from the flow of the game (which is unbelievably choppy anyway). Really, the game was a waste of time and money.

Serious technical issues

Appart from the facts of the clumsy gameplay, it's the fact that Dreamfall + Nvidia 6600gt PCIe 128mb is a NO GO, simply don't work with the latest drivers and you can roll back for old driver and even in this case, there was not guarantee that you can finish the game. And the official forum give no solution (it's not a solution for put old driver and pray for its work, solution is a patch, or change some registry or adjust the driver).

Sad.

ps: also there was report about the same issues for some newest models of nvidia graphics card. The solution for 6600gt was to install the 81.98 drivers but for the latest models you cannot install this version of the driver. So you must install a modified version of 81.98. How amusing ;-).
