This game totally rocked! The graphics are very pretty, it's incredibly scary (the heavy-metal style music both makes you tap your feet and jump outta your skin - scary, huh? :)), and the story is very well-fleshed out through the text (and if you don't want to wade through all that text, the important stuff is marked in red letters so you don't have to read it all). The game doesn't rely on monsters constantly crashing through windows and grissly gore for cheap thrills (although you will find a few dismembered body parts in there).

Unlike in RE (in which there was always enough lighting to see your way around a room), rooms are often very dark. However, you are given a flashlight to search the room, and the effect is both scary and helpful. Slowly moving through a new, dark room, only able to see what the flashlight can show you really makes you feel, well...alone in the dark. Since the enemies you're fighting are shadows, they react in a variety of ways to the flashlight (since shadows are both dispelled and cast by light, depending). For example, certain enemies will die from overexposure to the flashlight, some will simply run away, while others are spawned by it or go absolutely berserk upon being illuminated (you'd better be ready to either run or plug a couple dozen bullets into him, because these monsters are _TOUGH_).

I have only three complaints about the game: a. zombies. Zombies just don't fit in this game, they're the only enemies that don't react to light, and they're just plain annoying (except in Allen's lab where they can scare you silly). b. the first disc (although it only makes up about 30% of the game) is pretty annoying in that you haven't a clue what to do next, and there are lots of locked doors and lots of keys you have to deal with simultaneously. However, the longer second disc makes you glad you waded through the first disc; scary as heck, filled with even freakier monsters, scenes and music. You're forced to really think, too (attaching the blue lens to the flashlight to search for dried blood stains and eventually find a combo was ingenius). c. the final boss. He was really a ... and didn't exactly fill you with fear.

Despite these flaws I've pointed out, upon beating the game you won't remember them too well; you'll remember the best and most logical puzzles in survival horror, the scariest monsters ever shown in a video game, and perhaps the excellent theme song played during the credits. Conclusion: If you're a survival horror fan who's tired of Resident Evil's cheap thrills and weary gameplay (not to mention zombies), this is the way to go. And if you do like Resident Evil, grow up and play the true ruler of survival horror: Alone in the Dark. ;-)

i buyed this game, because i like "surviver-horror" games (Silent hill,Resident Evil).And what is good in surviver-horror games :surviving tricks(like :zombie:can be killed by bullet in head :-)fear(it's good itself),reaction.

Story

You are waiting in a helicopter,with your partner(a girl)
but somethin' goes really wrong...
The pilot turns into... ...something like a demon.
You are parachute to the closest point from the heli(a forest).
Your partner is landed in a castle's roof.

You will find out that the pair of you are landed in a island,that is controlled by a doctor ,who creats demoness creatures.you have to find your partner ,and together destroy the island,and evacuate yourselves.Really easy aren't it?

Inventory:

At the start you have a: first aid kit,flashlight,save charm(really important,you can't save without this)and a pretty .357 Revolver.
As you play the game you will have more weapons:three barrelled shotgun,rocket pistol,granade pistol,plasma gun(really cool,at the end ,the ammo will regenerade to never-end.

So I just wanna say a few things.
Thoose who don't like the survival-horror camera, dark, mistery, fear, hard to kill creatures just don't buy it.
And the ones who don't like to think, to use the human brain, are obviuosly not welcome to this game.
Now for thoose like me who know how to appreciate this game, know that is a great game along with Alone in the Dark 1,2,3 and Resident Evil series.

(I suck at spelling keep that in mind)When I first found this game it was at gamestop for Ps1 I thaut it looked cool so I got it and i'm glad I did.To start out with I disliked the camra it was seen by seen(NOT point and click)and you didnt no where it would be placed(in a window,right next to you,a few yards away,stuff like that) but when I got use to it I relly liked it.well I got stuck more times than I can count and put it away for awile and perodicly played it then came a day I got my Xbox 360 and I sold my Ps2.Well I got to thinking about this game again wishing I would have finished it so I got it for pc (found it here for a cent plus shipping :))and the graphics were much better than the ps1.well you no what I beat edward carnby in less than 2 days,a bit longer for aline cedrac,and I had to admit that it was on the top of the list for me.but I took 1 star off because it can get very frustrating but dont let that get you down.now people who say its a resident evil(except for the engine) bull crap alone in the dark was around in 1992 and resident evil was around in 1996,Tomb raider times, (and its a lot less gory.)you can run in this one (for those who have been familear with the series)which is a magor upgrade,no longer pressing the derectional keys to attack you hold down the left mouse button, use the mouse or derectional keys to point your wepon,and right click to shoot.well those of you who are familear with the series the engine (unless posted above)is the same(3d things in a 2d background :).)Buy or ignore,its up to you I hope this helped and plz exuse my spelling mistakes :). rank 9.5 out of 10.

I have been playing the Alone in the dark series for many years. My first ever experience was back in '93 or so. I purchased a 3DO interactive multiplayer and Alone in the dark. I waited till night and played it and got scared half to death. The next day I was edgy everywhere I went. Well, The New Nightmare has got the magic after the not so great titles in between the first ever and this, the newest. I waited till night once again, hooked up my laptop at my desk and played it with headphones and no lights. Absolutely wonderful. In the first half hour I got startled 3-4 times and am already dying to know what is going to happen to Edward and Aline and who some of these ominous people are.

The graphics are really great, and lightyears ahead of the old Alone in the darks. I place the graphics near, but not quite the level of the Gamecube remakes of Resident evil of course. (Barely anything matches those). I play this game on my Intel Mobile Celeron 2.0GHz 256kb L2 cache, 256mb pc2100 DDR 266mhz ram, 64mb AGP Intel Extreme Graphics 2 equiped notebook computer and it plays beautifully.

Highly recommended especially to old fans of the series.

When I bought this game for PC, i was stunned. This is probably the best Alone In The Dark game since the very first one. Alone In The Dark 2 and 3 were weak since they didn't create the overall scary feeling that makes 1 and 4 great. This one takes it's roots from the first game of exploring a dark scary house with hidden secrets everywhere.

And just like Alone In The Dark 2, there is a lot of shooting in this game. The creatures here are extremely difficult and can take a few attempts to win over. There are a lot of these annoying zombies in hallways. Everytime you shoot them and leave the hallways, more will come in when you come back!

I first played this game on the playstation and realized how terribly awkward the game was on it. Loading was very slow and the save feature was terrible. Sadly the PC version's save feature isn't any better. I don't get why the creators made the save-feature like this. Many games that had this type of saving got many complaints and their ratings suffered. Besides this drawback, the same Edward Carnby we new from the previous games has gotten himself a taste of the fountain of youth and gotten himself a new marilyn manson face-lift. I kinda liked the old gentleman Edward Carnby.

I'd probably give this game 4 stars but since some people on here have a bad habit of giving this game a 1 star because the graphics are sligtly outdated and not a resident evil game, i have to give a 5. I don't get why people have to be so picky about graphics and other stuff. Computer games are an art. Art doesn't have to be depicted with rich colors and sound. Sometimes the dullness can really capture a feel like this game does.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys adventure games or games such as Resident Evil.
