This is my first foray into Alone in The Dark, horror/mystery-type games and my overall opinion is positive. Every once in a while, however, I am finding myself a bit frustrated from just being stumped in general, because occasionally the clues you have to find to move forward can be a bit of a stretch of logic (that's my opinion). Other than that, I am having fun (those that are reading that have played it, I am stuck in the Library with that darn winged monster-thing, it just won't die even though I figured out the shooting trick-- but I'll get it!). The reviewer below my review obviously played the part of Aline (yes, you can play one of two characters that start off in two different locations with different equipment-- oh! The replayability value!) and gave up in the first 10 minutes without getting to any of the literature that explains the creatures of Darkness and their (obvious) aversion to light. After you start finding some of the reading --Obed's Doctorate of Phriendship was a good laugh! :-)-- you rapidly become immersed in a pretty sinister plot. And yes, some cinematics and monsters *will* pop out when you don't expect them, and they *will* startle you. Okay, the graphics, resolution and some of the music could be better (let's not forget the year it was from, games have come a long way since then), but overall I think the extra cheese makes the creepy atmosphere all the better.
Windows XP users will have difficulty installing and running the game unless they create a new copy of autoexec.nt, which newer versions of Windows, by default, do not have. In order to get this (and lots of other old Windows programs) running, check out Microsoft help here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
Within my experience it is not necessary to create a new command.nt as the help article suggests-- if you follow the instructions for just autoexec.nt you should be cruising toward Alone in the Dark bliss!
All-in-all, this game packs lots of entertainment, I wish it had a game timer to tell me how many hours I've spent lost in it (use the maps!!!). Used and new under two bucks? How can you go wrong? :-)
Boring, Repetitive, annoying.

I really enjoyed Resident Evil and thought that this would be something similar so I bought it.
This game starts out decent but looses itself after about five minutes. The controls are absolutely horrible because they were made for console and are a pain to use on a PC. You're often asked pointless questions such as do you want to climb the ladder yes or no. Why would you be asked that when you have to climb the ladder either way? In some places you can lock yourself out from going back even though you might need something in a previous room (such as going back through a mirror when you first enter the house).
Enemies are often placed in such a way that if you walk into the room you wouldn't have a chance to shoot them and they would attack you right away. This would have been OK if you could find extra first aid kits, or bullets for that matter.
You'll also most likely run out of ammo and will have to start over many times simply because the game wants you to follow certain path around the manor and if you decide to explore for yourself you will soon end up dead. More plot/path flexibility would help quite a bit.
A reviewer who said that atmosphere and graphics of this game were spoiled by bad gameplay was right. I never got very far because I found this game boring, repetitive and annoying. Not at all like good old classics of the same genre.

Only being able to save your game a half-dozen times or so over the course of the entire game is bad enough.
But this game is ridiculously hard. The combat engine is horrible, the weapons are ridiculously weak, and ammo pickups are rare, which is unusual since it takes around 50 bullets to kill anything. And when you do run out, unlike in previous aitd titles, you have no defense whatsoever. In fact, it seems like the only way to get anywhere is to constantly run.
I got it for 10 bucks and consider it a waste. After having to wade through the same cut-sceens over and over again, i just got bored with it.
I give it two stars simply because it had some potential. Unlike the resident evil series, this was genuinely scary. The atmosphere is nice and creepy, the use of a flashlight being a nice touch. That and the various monsters pop up out of nowhere, usually when you least expect them.
The New Nightmare is the classic adventure game

The Alone in the Dark series has always been an adventure series. To all those who have played The Quest for Glory games, Alone in the Dark is not that much different except that it has a horror theme. You find items and you must use them to solve puzzles. There is some fighting, but for the most part it is not an essential part of the plot or storyline. The storyline, as stated very clearly by the creators, is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft's stories are not that of brazen heros blasting monsters to bits. It is exactly the opposite. Lovecraft is of old gods, insanity, and the unknown.
The system used by this game for game play has always been a problem. If you have never played an Alone in the Dark game, you will find the same kind of system in Nocturne. In fact, Nocturne might a be the best test for this game. If you liked the storyline to the Texas adventure in Nocturne you will probably like Alone in the Dark. The only difference between that scenario and Alone in the Dark is that Alone is more puzzle oriented.
The biggest con to this game is that like all classic adventure and puzzle games has no replayability. Once you have played both characters, the game is done. This is not a Diablo nor will they probably create expansions for this game. You will just have to wait for next Alone in the Dark game... which if you watch the credits at the end, another game is coming. Edward Carnby will return.
In the end, if you like adventure and puzzle, you should like this game. If you like Lovecraft you will like this game. If you are into games like 1st person shooters or other action oriented games this is probably to slow of a game for you.

Just plain fun. Great way to escape from reality. The graphics are great and the creepy creatures literally made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. In this game I get to be a beautiful red head, lost in a spooky manson loaded with nothing but a shot gun, granade launcher, and rapid fire pistol. Great way to take my mind off a lousy day at work.
A Great Comeback!

When I bought this game for PC, i was stunned. This is probably the best Alone In The Dark game since the very first one. Alone In The Dark 2 and 3 were weak since they didn't create the overall scary feeling that makes 1 and 4 great. This one takes it's roots from the first game of exploring a dark scary house with hidden secrets everywhere.
And just like Alone In The Dark 2, there is a lot of shooting in this game. The creatures here are extremely difficult and can take a few attempts to win over. There are a lot of these annoying zombies in hallways. Everytime you shoot them and leave the hallways, more will come in when you come back!
I first played this game on the playstation and realized how terribly awkward the game was on it. Loading was very slow and the save feature was terrible. Sadly the PC version's save feature isn't any better. I don't get why the creators made the save-feature like this. Many games that had this type of saving got many complaints and their ratings suffered. Besides this drawback, the same Edward Carnby we new from the previous games has gotten himself a taste of the fountain of youth and gotten himself a new marilyn manson face-lift. I kinda liked the old gentleman Edward Carnby.
I'd probably give this game 4 stars but since some people on here have a bad habit of giving this game a 1 star because the graphics are sligtly outdated and not a resident evil game, i have to give a 5. I don't get why people have to be so picky about graphics and other stuff. Computer games are an art. Art doesn't have to be depicted with rich colors and sound. Sometimes the dullness can really capture a feel like this game does.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys adventure games or games such as Resident Evil.

This is a Lovecraft style horror game with lots of mood. The game is engaging enough for puzzle / horror fans but shooter style gamers will be frustrated. Its definitely not Quake. It has some rough edges. The game saves at level points so anything you've done in an area is undone so its best to clear a room and go back to a cleared area to save. Mildly annoying. The camera angles are sometimes awkward for combat and can get you killed as the monsters suddenly appear. On the other hand it gives a nice creepy claustrophobiuc feel to the game. The design and non-moving graphics are pretty cool. But the monsters, while innovatively designed are rendered in such a way to make them look too much like cardboard cut outs. The puzzles are about medium difficulty although in my opinion too many "find the key" type puzzles. The game has an excellent back-story of a family entwined with evil for several generations. It would make a good novel. The game is worth playing but not the game of the year.
Only played the demo - but that's as far as I wanna go.

Just a warning for those that aren't familiar with the Alone in the Dark series that they may want to try the demo first. The reason being I tried the demo and have never been more unimpressed by a game hyped such as this.
Fans of the Alone in the Dark series might find the sequel entertaining but some of my gripes with the demo -
(And keep in mind it was the demo so I can't give you an idea on the entire game, but like I said, the demo made me determined not to buy the game.)
-- The perspective is constantly switched. In other words, in one scene, you are looking at the front of the character, when he moves to another area (zone) that is downloaded, you are looking at him from the side, etc... Each small area (zone) has to be downloaded and the viewing perspective constantly changes which is very annoying.
-- The mouse didn't work. At least on the demo. It was keyboard only.
-- Great FX on the character, but the scenery (especially the pouring rain) was TERRIBLE. It was a giant clash comparing this beautifully, lifelike character with some aspects that looked like the old CGA graphics.
-- The gameplay system was very cumbersome. It wasn't managed to give you a smooth flow when you are switching items, etc..
With lack of a better way to explain it, the game reminded me of an 80's game. For instance, the downloading of every small parcel of land (zone) as opposed to smooth flowing through the entire area like ALL games today. And as far as the horror/spooky theme, it was very cheesy. I would recommend Clive Barker's Undying as a game that is everything this one attempted to be.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is successfully scary due entirely to the fact it remains true to the original: Alone in the Dark. And that it features a main character whose only characteristic, as listed in the game, is "owns double-barreled gun". But the game also requires you to think. After you fire 93 million rounds of ammo and a couple dozen rockets (of COURSE there are rockets) into a monster you may realize you're doing something wrong. Pieces of objects must be assembled, codes discovered, and other such mental missions must be completed. The sound is great, eerie chords play at random intervals, causing everyone in the room to simultaneously wet their pants. With unique camera angles, playing the game is like watching a movie. This game does not use large amounts of monster to be scary. On the contrary, it uses LACK OF monsters to keep you on the edge of your seat, and occasionally firing your rifle blindly at some ordinary household appliance, such as a lamp. All said, I have absolutely no arguments with the game but one:
THE DIALOGUE! The two main characters communicate via radio, and can be heard at any given moment spouting intellectual witticisms such as: "It's dark here!" "Find a safe place to hide." "Make this all stop, right now!" "Carnby, is that you?" Of course, in Aline's defense it might not really be Carnby on the radio, but someone else who stole his radio and is imitating his voice. Although most of the dialogue went over my head, I am probably just not cultured enough to understand it. Regardless, the game is great. But one rule: You MUST play it in the dark.
