After failing to conquer the earth realm through tournament battle, Shao Kahn decides to get straight down to business and send "Outworld Extermination Squads" to North America. That's the short version of the main background story for MK3. Naturally a new crowd of fighters (along with some of the old line-up) gather to either put a stop to it or encourage it. There are fourteen fighters to choose from. Old favourites like Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Kano, Sonya, Jax, Sub-Zero and Kung Lao return. The new fighters include Sindel (Shao Kahn's "queen" herself), Sheeva (the first player-controllable four-armed character), Kabal (a weird warrior with a mask), Cyrax & Sektor (two "automated" ninjas from Sub-Zero's clan), Stryker (a baton-weilding cop) and Nightwolf (your typical culture-preserving Red Indian). The gameplay itself has changed from MKII. Now there's a "run" button and new "auto combos." The fighting has been speeded up quite a bit and the fatality time is very reduced. MK3 reduces the strategic approach of the previous games and is more geared towards button mashing. The basis of auto combos is choosing the right button at the right time.

Since MK3 takes place mainly in North America, there are no more shaolin temples. The character and background graphics are quite good in the SNES conversion. The graphic resolution has also improved a notch from previous MK games. In a couple of stages, performing an uppercut on your opponent sends him through the roof of that stage and the fight will be transferred to the stage directly above! That's a tad innovative as fighting game ideas go. Aside from fatalities, babalities and friendships, MK3 introduces the "animality" (which requires "showing mercy" towards your defeated opponent before it can be performed). As for the fatalities they are fun to watch, like Liu Kang's "MK1 drop" and Kabal's "ugly face" and gory at the same time (though not as much as MKII). For the first time in the series, the player had the choice of three paths to take, either novice, warrior or master. Music and sound-wise it's okay as far as MK games go. Fluid controls too, though they should've made some of the finishing moves a bit easier to perform. The computer AI (artificial intelligence) is quite aggressive even in the "easy" mode.

If you have the previous MK games, don't hesitate on this one. Though not as original as MKII, if you got tired of its slow pace, and want more diversity in the finishing moves, Mortal Kombat 3 is for you. To get the most out of it however, you should play with the cheat codes on. MK3 also marks the period when Williams Entertainment, instead of Acclaim, started developing and distributing the MK games.

this is truly the one of the greatest fighting games ever made. most of the character from MKII return such as jax, liu kang, sub-zero (unmasked) shang-tsung, kung lao etc. there are also new characters like sindel, sheeva, kabal, sector, cyrax, nightwolf, stryker, and smoke. the graphics are wonderful, the sound is great and the fatalities are really fatal. there is also friendship, babality, and animality. the combos are fairly easy to do and are fun to do over again. playing against computer is easy on very easy and very difficult on very hard. there are only 5 credits when u play, but there various cheats to help u in the game. kool stuff, kooler stuff, scott stuff an music test will realy help out in the game. cheats like 1 button fatality, enabling motaro and shao khan, extended fatality time really make the more fun than it already is. this is truly the best MK made and one of the greatest if not the greatest fighting game ever made for any system.

You should have seen the look of disappointment on my face when I first played Mortal Kombat 3. I actually received the game a day before its official release. My dad's ex-girlfriend found a copy of it somewhere and bought it for me. While that was a nice, unexpected thing for her to do, I really don't like the game.

I hate Mortal Kombat 3 not only because many of the classic fighters of the past aren't included, but for another MAJOR reason- the actual fighting sucks. I absolutely DESPISE the fact that combos have been added to the Mortal Kombat series. Nothing more irritating than doing really well in a fight ONLY for the computer to suddenly get this amazing burst of energy and charge at me with devastating combo after devastating combo. That right there ruins the game *completely*.

Speaking of combos, actually being able to pull one off is almost impossible thanks to the way the game company designed the combo system. They made it so you have to press a BUNCH of buttons *exactly the right way* at *exactly the right time* or else the combo won't work. Yeah, I'll really have time to properly do THAT in the middle of a fight...

The fatalities are horrible-looking. They look *really* cheap. The fatalities in Mortal Kombat 2 are graphic and bloody, but the ones in THIS game are terrible because they are so darn cheesy-looking. They aren't as violent as you'd expect them to be in a Mortal Kombat game. In fact, the amount of blood in the game went down *considerably*. A *little* wave of blood splashes from your opponents body when you punch or kick them, and I hate it *so much*. It's almost like a normal fighting game. If it didn't say "Mortal Kombat" on the box you wouldn't even know you were playing a Mortal Kombat game!

I hate the fact that they modernized the levels so you can fight your opponent on the city streets with buildings and other normal-looking things in the background. I have news for you- EVERY fighting game features a city level. I thought the people behind Mortal Kombat were more creative than to copy what everyone ELSE is doing. I guess not.

But the one thing that makes the game worthless in my opinion is the fact that there seems to be a bug in the game that makes the computer REALLY cheap-shot you after you win just ONE fight in the tournament. For instance, let's say you start a tournament with Liu Kang and you have the game on easy mode. You defeat your very first opponent in two straight rounds and move on to the next fight. No problem, right? Suddenly *for no reason at all* the next opponent will RIP YOU TO SHREDS with combos and other things, giving you NO TIME AT ALL to respond. You lose both rounds and have to do the fight again. Remember, this is on EASY mode.

Let's say, you try it again with Liu Kang (or anyone you want). For some reason, NOW the fight is easy. NOW the computer isn't throwing combo after combo at you and NOW you can complete the fight without much of a problem. You beat your opponent in two simple rounds and move on to the next fighter. Guess what? The INSANE cheap-shotting has returned, and in a matter of seconds you die in two rounds. You're shocked and confused that the game has turned into INSANE mode. Time to hit the continue button. You pick Liu Kang as your playable character again... nah, let's make it Kabal this time. Guess what? The fight is BACK to easy. Your opponent is dead in two rounds.

You can't understand why the tournament fighting bounces back and forth between easy and INSANELY difficult. After all, you put the game on easy, it SHOULD BE EASY! The next opponent you have to face... yup, you guessed it- nearly impossible to defeat him until you die and try it again!!

Do you see the pattern here? After you beat an opponent easily in two rounds, the next fight will be *just the opposite* with you having to face an EXTREMELY challenging fighter, and most likely you will NOT be able to beat him. But the NEXT time you face him he *will* be easy! Do you see why the tournament is so frustrating? You win, you die, you win, you die, and the tournament will keep going like this until eventually you run out of continues and therefore, die. NO WAY can you put a positive spin on this.

That's the dumbest and cheapest thing I've ever seen in a fighting game, and that's the main reason I hate Mortal Kombat 3 more than ANY other game. At the very least, when you enter a tournament on easy mode it should START off easy and *gradually* build to a challenge by the time the final opponent rolls around. Not any of this "easy this fight, impossible the next fight" crap.

Avoid Mortal Kombat 3 forever.

This entry fell a bit short.....

Wow, this was a rather large disappointment. The graphics, music and sound effects have all fallen short of MKII on this console, which is very odd. The controls are the same, but the additions to the gameplay have made things a bit easier, once you get accustomed to them.

There are a total of 14 playable characters (not counting the hidden ones), but there is still no save feature. You might want to play Ultimate MK3 instead of this, as it adds much more replay value, unless you are a Mortal Kombat collector.

THIS VERSION OF MORTAL KOMBAT 3 SUCKS. THE CHARACTERS ARE BORING HERE, THE GRAPHICS ARE BAD, THE MUSIC IS BAD, AND THE FATALITIES AREN'T AS GOOD IN THIS VERSION. THIS IS NOT REALLY A GOOD VERSION OF MK 3 TO BUY. BUT, MK 3 WASN'T REALLY THAT GOOD OF A GAME TO BEGIN WITH. IF YOU WANT THIS GAME, I SUGGEST YOU LOOK FOR THE PLAYSTATION VERSION AND LEAVE ALL THE OTHER VERSIONS OF THIS GAME ALONE. THIS WAS ONE OF THE LAST 2 MK GAMES THAT CAME OUT ON THE SUPER NINTENDO BEFORE IT WAS DISCONTINUED FOR THE NINTENDO 64.

This is a fun game but don't be fooled. In this game the only ninja you get is my favorite Sub Zero. Scorpion and Reptile are'nt even in this game. Neither is Johnny Cage,Kitana,or Baraka. This game has brought some new replacement's for them though. Like Kabal,Stryker,Sector, and Cyrax. Overall I wouldn't buy this MK game but would rent it.If you would like to know if I have any other reviews look for my logo which is SMK at the bottom or top of my review.OUT!

Will Mortal Kombat Ever stop? I hope not, because this third instalment is the best i've played yet. It's true that Scorpion & Reptlie aren't in it(Wich Scorpion Is My favorite) But there is always my second choice Sub-zero. Some of the new characters like Cyrax & Sector are pretty sweet. This is a must have game.

If you liked this game check out all of the other Mortal Kombat Games, Movies, Books & cds out There.

An acquired taste

Either you get Mortal Kombat 3 or you don't. This installment really shook up the formula from the first two, so much so that even fans of the originals weren't sure what to make of it. Fan favourite characters have been removed to make way for newcomers, and many returning characters have changed appearances. Backgrounds, in keeping with the game's evolving storyline, are now more gritty and urban. There is a run button, and the combo system is pre-programmed rather than free form. Even the harsh edge of the fatalities seem to have been toned down. They're still gruesome, but also more tongue in cheek and outrageous than before.

It's not a bad game at all, and can be pretty addictive and rewarding once you've mastered all the moves and uncovered all the secrets. It's just a style of gameplay that's harder for newcomers to get into, and a large departure from other series such as Street Fighter, King of Fighters, etc. But considering it became the basis for the rest of the 2D entries in the series (UMK3, MK Trilogy), it's a gameplay style players will need to get used to. Certainly the SNES version does nothing wrong, with sharp graphics, control, and sound that are faithful to the original arcade. If you like brushing up on your old 2D fighters now and then, Mortal Kombat 3 is worth checking out.

Sindel Arrives!!!

Mortal Kombatn didn't really do anything for me until Mortal Kombat 3. One look at Sindel and I was addicted and in love. I am now a Mortal Kmobat addict on a Konquest to find my true love, the White-Haired Raven of the Realm. Fall to your knees maggots and worship Queen Sindel!!

Sindel is the coolest and most awesome of all Mortal Kombat fighters. She sonic screams leaving her victim helpless and vulnerable to an uppercut. She spits red fireballs, she flys, she wraps her hair around you and smashes your body all over the place. Sindel rules. She has two awesome fatalities too. You can either sonic scream, which tears all the flesh of the victim leaving a bloody skeleton, or you can do a 'hair wrap' and spin your opponent until he explodes.

Sindel is the most perfect woman. I want her, I need her, I love her. I must have her. I will not rest until I am kissing the feet of the beautiful Sindel.
