What's sad is that this game seemed like a huge achievement back in '94. Maybe I was too young to realize it back then. Maybe it was lack of experience. I thought this game rocked when it first came out, and unfortunately I'm no longer sure why.

To me, it seems this is a fairly average platformer wrapped up in a beautiful package. The graphics were novel and unique at the time, but I guess now I just think they're awkward and weird looking. My main beef with the game is the control and the frustrating level design. The mine cart stages and the ones where you have to fire yourself from barrel to barrel...somehow I beat this when I was 6. I can't fathom how I did that now.

Another minor problem is that the bosses are all pretty easy. Four hits usually does the trick.
I don't recommend re-playing this oldie. Unlike Sonic and Mario World, this one may be better left as a childhood memory.

This was one of the first platform-games I`ve ever tried to play, and I must say Donkey kong didn`t let me down..!Still,after many years (and hours)playing this game I still find Donkey Kong Country one of the best platform-games ever!Personally I think the background music in this game very "chanty"!

When someone insults a next-generation video game's graphics with something like, "It could have easily been done on SNES," she or he may not remember Donkey Kong Country. Even on on X-Box, GameCube, PS2, or that Phantom thingy, the graphics on this baby are no insult. The CG resolution is crystal-clear and the animation in unparalelled. The rain fits perfectly and the transition of weather is flawless. The music isn't bad either . . . it's great, from Funky Kong's theme and the water stages to Candy's lovable romance beat and the final battle with King K. Rool. Both graphics and sound really push the SNES to its limits.
As for the gameplay, that's great too. The difficulty can challenge and even frustrate you, but you'll be coming back for more. If I have to say anything bad about the game, Dixie Kong is not here yet and there are no digitized voices. There are grunts and cries, but no actual words.

It's a good game, but overrated.

Yes, the graphics are relly good for SNES. That shouldn't be the selling point for the series, even though the game itself is pretty fun. It's a solid game and you should at least check it out. Graphics: 5/5, sound and music: 5/5, fun 5/5. Overratedness: 4/5. Not necessarily in the 100 best of SNES.

OK for a SNES platformer...

This is one of the better SNES platform games (since the SNES does have a number of platformers that are not Nintendo's best). The story is creative and strange since it involves monkeys (why do they call a monkey Donkey we'll never know). The gameplay is excellent and graphics are decent. The game can be beaten without much help but with a lot of work and timing. The fault is that it is not really addictive. You play it for a week and then store it away and take it out later. This is otherwise good and you should definitely pick up a copy.

excellent game!

It's hard to rate a game like Donkey Kong Country, which sold chiefly on the novelty of its computer-rendered graphics back in 1994. There's still a solid platforming design underneath the flash, but it's a pretty easy romp compared to Nintendo's Mario titles. This is especially appearant now that the game is over a decade old(!) and the flash no longer holds up as well on the GBA port.

Still Rareware really did an excellent job, and their success here propelled the company to a strong supporting role on the Nintendo 64. Gameplay is on the easy side, but the levels are still a blast to play through. There are lots of varied environments and things to see, with no dull moments in sight. A fitting memorable soundtrack adds to the experience. Plus, Donkey Kong Country revitalized one of Nintendo's dormant characters, taking him from a pixelated barrel-throwing ape to a rendered, barrel-throwing ape with attitude.

Overall there's a great experience here, just one that's a bit on the easy side. The two sequels ramp up the difficulty level considerably, and together the games form a fine trilogy on the SNES.

#1 best, hit me if ya disagree. Love the mine ride origional!"

Fun? 5* = because of all of the fun.

Overall? 4* = cuz of all of the fun, the greatness, and dot dot dot...the only reason that it was 4 not 5 is the graphics were not in 'the upper echelon of the best usage of the system' (like donkey kong country 2 and 3 but with better game but worse graphics usage).

Killer-killer game, y'alls.

One of the most revolutionary games of the 16-bit era

Now a blockbuster in making great platformers for Nintendo, Rare's biggest breakthrough was with this game, Donkey Kong Country. In ways, Donkey Kong Country is a lot like Super Mario World. Like Super Mario World, in Donkey Kong Country, the main ways to defeat enemies are by jumping on top of them and throwing things at them. Just like Mario and Luigi love to collect coins, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong love collecting bananas, since they are monkeys.

King K. Rool, a huge alligator, has stolen all the bananas from the Kongs' Banana Hoard. So it's up to Donkey Kong and his friend Diddy Kong to try and track down King K. Rool and defeat him in order to get their mounds of bananas back. But it won't be so easy because along the way, there are several dangerous enemies that they'll have to look out for such as Kremlings, vultures, beavers, bees with a mean stinger, octopusses, and tons of others.

Fortunately for the Kongs, they do have a few friends on their side. The most famous of them is Cranky Kong, who offers tips, major trash talking, and interesting stories. Cranky Kong is actually the original Donkey Kong who threw barrels at Mario. Funky Kong is a real cool character who offers an easy way to travel between worlds, and Candy Kong is here to save your game. There are also a few animal characters to lend a helping ride such as Rambi the rhinoceros, Winky the frog, Enguarde the swordfish, and others.

The terrains in Donkey Kong Country are a wonder to behold. The main reason Donkey Kong Country was such a standout title when it was first released is because of its way above average graphics. Whether it's the characters, the terrains, or the backgrounds, the graphics all have a 3D-ish look to them, and they're almost too good to be included in a 16-bit game.

Donkey Kong Country also has great sound effects and music. A lot of the music is real catchy and unforgettable, and the sound effects fit the game to a tee. Everything else about Donkey Kong Country isn't bad either. The control is top-notch, the replay value has no limits, and this is a game that is always fun.

The other reason Donkey Kong Country was an instant classic when it was first released is because of its many spectacular environments. There is everything from jungles, underwater environments, polluted areas, tree tops, mine cart rides, and plenty more to be experienced. In each level, all you really have to do is get to the end of them since this is a 2D side scroller, but it's a lot more fun if you try and find as many of the secret areas as you can.

Like many of the other great 2D side scrollers such as Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country is overflowing with secret areas. There are places in walls to break a hole in, almost invisible hidden barrels, and several other ways to find a secret. Whenever you save your game, it always tells what percentage (there is a total of 101% in the game) of secrets that you've found. THIS is what keeps the replay value so high, on top of the game being fun enough to go all the way through from start to finish, over and over again.

If you ever get tired of playing the game by yourself and want to challenge somebody or play along with them, you'll be glad to hear that Donkey Kong Country is a two player game. In two-player mode, you and a friend can work as a team (one person controls Donkey Kong and the other controls Diddy), or play the adventure game against each other in order to see who can get the farthest while losing the least amount of lives.

Donkey Kong Country is one of the best adventure and platforming video games of all time. If you have a Super Nintendo, I 101% recommend getting Donkey Kong Country. It's a classic!
