For the Master

Overlord

This is an absolute hoot, the first time through, on the second go round it loses a bit of its luster.

You are the Overlord, recently resurrected from an apparently extremely nasty "accident", your faithful minions (and I DO mean faithful) have "cleaned up" what's left of a ruined tower and are ready and willing to do your bidding.

Controls are different and take some getting used to. Directed with the thumb sticks you can control either the Overlord or his minions, but without a camera control it makes searching and seeing where you are going a tad difficult.

You use the minions (four types) to reach areas and battle enemies you can not. Direct your minions to loot, smash, maim, destroy and in general wreck havoc upon unsuspecting villagers and baddies. Armed with an ax, you too, can join the fun. Low on health? Sacrifice the little buggers. It's OK, really, they don't mind and you can always summon up some more when you've gone through the current supply.

Up on your pop culture references? Good. Overlord has them in spades, right down to a well known and beloved Shire.

The minions are a riot! Watch as they don pumpkins for helmets, chase and pester sheep, break open boxes and fight over the contents, "That's mine!" "For you, Master!" "I got pasta!" "I drank it" (They like beer, beware). I was fully expecting Dwight Frye to appear (heh, heh, heh, the original Renfield of Dracula). They must have molded the minions after him!

There is one tiny tiny problem, there is no map. NO MAP! There is a useless paper one in the box, but it does nothing! That is the one flaw in the game, you cannot see where you're going nor where you have been. Bad game design, shame on them! If you want me to get there, you need to tell me or at least let me see where I am and where I'm headed. Who was the idiot that thought that was a smart idea?

Play it, play it, play it! I gave it a three due to the sort of non-re-playability.

A Game worth buying

Well I just finished this game today and I actually was impressed. The ending wasn't the best in the world but the actual game is good. I have to admit if this game didn't have the minions it wouldn't have been that great. The only major flaw was that the game didn't have a map; so I ran around in circles and got lost numerous times. This is a good game and actually worth buying if you like this kind of game.

Glitchlord

I think this game has alot of potential, and if it wasn't for all the glitches,I'd give this game a 5.

Three hours into the game, the camera angle becomes stuck to a bird's eye point of view and will not allow me to change it back.I can push the L button and use the thumbstick to move the camera back, but as soon as I let go,the camera swoops back up in the sky making the game awkward and ultimatly unplayable.

The game WILL NOT allow me to give the food back to the peasents. My minions will walk right up to the edge of where they are supposed to set the food and then stop. Thus,I HAVE to choose the evil option otherwise I can't continue on with the game.

Many times my minions become lost or stuck on objects;other times they just seem to disappear for no reason.

There are also other glitches I have read about online, most notably the game crashing bug of the dwarven brewery and teleporting rather than taking the elevator up.Supposedly this results in forever losing the spoke to the wheel and not being able to continue.

There is another glitch with Velvet if you power up your tower at a certain time...

This would be a perfect game if it weren't for all the glitches and bugs.
Shame on the developers for not taking the proper time to test their product before releasing it to the masses.

As much as I would like to play through this game and see the ending, the countless mistakes in this game prevent me from doing so...

All hail the Glitchlord.

This is the funnier side to all those fantasy RPGs out there. Absolutely love having the minions run around and hack stuff up. The only bad side to this game is the camera takes a little time to get used to. If you like those games where you get to be bad then at least rent this game.

Fun Addictive Play

Overlord is a decent and addictive sim, no need to go into specifics of story. I will mention what I like about the game and the flaws which are few. There is the ability to basically order hordes of gremlin like underlings to do your bidding. There is strategy to contend with though, namely that certain minions can only do certain tasks. It doesn't stop there, you have enemies that will attack while you're trying to figure things out, and there are obstacles which you I have to figure the best way to go through or around. The camera isn't friendly, it's an enemy too. The customization process of upgrading your dark tower and weapons of not only yourself but the minions as well is just as fun as watching your minions destroy a village and wreck places. This is solid addition to the 360 library but it's not pure hack and slash.

The game is very fun, the controls get a little clunky at times when you have 20 minions running around on screen. Once you get used to it, the game is original and is definately worth the time to play.

Graphics can only take you so far

The game is a 100% graphical masterpiece. Everything in the environment is colorful and reacts with a strong visual appearances. Although the game falls short onces the visual appeal falls away. The game lacks interesting objective and is far to linear. The ability to control a "Army" is fun but grows weary and repetitive. Its a fun game to walk around and enjoy the scenery but lacks stimulant for me to keep playing.

Game with a fun twist

Overlord gives you the opportunity to play the other side of the hero's pendulum, though you can be a "good" evil overlord too. Controling minions to do your evil bidding provides a restful split from the hero is everything game play that you might be use to...but you can be a more direct player by attacking and doing certain actions yourself. There are a few different options to choose during the game that affect the outcome adding some replay value to the game. Overall, a very fun game to release stress on-

Almost, but not quite

If you're toying with the idea of picking up Overlord, chances are you probably can't go too wrong by doing just that. If you enjoy hack and slash RPG types like Fable and have a fondness for games that don't take themselves too seriously like Black and White you'll probably find yourself right at home here.

Now on the flip side of that if you enjoy in depth RPGs with advanced items and huge inventories and a wealth of rare and coveted weapons, potions, etc. you might not get your fill here. Furthermore if you have your hopes set to become a truly evil incarnation that sets flame to his foes and damns those that would ask for help, again you might be a little disappointed.

Overlord is an overall fun game that lets you fill the role of an evil...well Overlord set on rebuilding his tower and getting even with a few (now corrupt) heroes. By this point you probably already know some of the more novel aspects of Overlord, most notable of which are the minions. The minion system works very well allowing you to control up to 50 minions during the later levels of the game.

Your minions are comprised of four unique types of minions that each serve a purpose and have their own strengths and weaknesses. The traits of the minions will often have you tackling puzzles that call for the right use of the right minions. For instance you may have to have your minions carry an item across a fire engulfed grate. Now using your brown minions will result in a rather large barbecue, however using your red minions which are resistant to fire will allow you to proceed.

You are also able to upgrade both your minions and your armor/weapons to some degree. Your minions will take items left by fallen foes which will increased their resilience and damage. The system for this is very intuitive, most of the time your well equipped minions will be the first into the fight while the weaker minions trail behind in an attempt to take less damage from the brunt of the fight. Minions that are in need of upgrade are generally the first to pick up items also, so you don't have to worry too much about getting three or four uber minions while the rest are lacking.

Your armor and weapons can be upgraded in the game too. Throughout the game you'll find smelters that will produce more effect armor and weapons. Once you've created those items by spending gold you can then upgrade them by sacrificing your minions. Sacrificing different types of minions will add different attributes to your armor, for example sacrificing a green minion on a weapon will add an increased chance to critical with the weapon. So overall the item/upgrade system works well without weighing the game down too much by having you spend endless hours searching for rare loot.

The game has a solid story that works well and in most cases would be well received. It does however fall short on the evil end of things. While you're supposedly the poster child for the maladjusted and evil you'll still find your self off on some of the standard quests found in any number of other nameless RPGs. You'll be sent off to find food for your villagers, or protect them from some other evil invaders, etc. This is all well and good and you'll find that you'll have the opportunity to perform some evil twists with many of these but the story just doesn't convey the sense of evil that it was built up to deliver. Most of evil found in the game falls more to the comical side of things, which isn't necessarily a bad thing so long as you weren't expecting some evil epic.

So overall I think Overlord is a great game to pick up, and you should enjoy it hopefully as much as I did so long as you go into with the right idea about its presentation. There are tons of neat touches throughout the game that may add to replay value such as being able to beat it completely evil or completely good (well as good as an evil overlord can be) and of course the 360 version offers the standard load of of achievements that can be quite a bit of fun.

Overlord is a game unlike any other this year. Fun gameplay but a few glitches that I think should have been fixed before released. The story was really good. but the game was to short.
