WINNER: Worst Game of the Year

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 20 / 25
Date: April 16, 2006
Author: Amazon User

PROS:

- Audio commentary by Jon Miller and Joe Morgan

CONS:

- Like all 2K games, the controls are so overly complex that you can't pickup and play the game. Even when you DO understand the controls, they're so awkward that it isn't even fun.

- There's no feel to pitching or hitting. A homerun feels the same as a single. Pitching is a disaster.

- Graphics look the same as a PS2 game from 4 years ago. Why does this game warrant a higher price tag???

- Game freezes.

- Messy interface, difficult to navigate.

====================

I can't imagine a worse baseball game. Couple this with the freeze issues many people are having, and this is without question one of the worst games for the 360.

WTF!!!

Wow...This game is bad in so many ways, that I don't even know where to start. But I'll try:

First of all, the graphics are terrible. This 360 supports HD graphics and this is what we get??? MVP '05 for my regular Xbox looked better. Balls hit in the outfield during HR Derby look like huge snowballs.

The new swing-stick feature is just plain horrible.

Baserunning is insanely stupid. One you hit a ball in play you have to smash the button corresponding with the base to speed up your runner. If you don't, outfielders can easily take away would-be singles. This is ok if nobody's on base, but if someone is already on, then this doesn't work at all.

Fielding is awful. Nough said.

One good note...pitching has been very unpredictable, which I think is a good thing. One problem I had with MVP '05 is that you could consistantly hit the corners of the strike zone. Not so with this game, which makes it more realistic, and more difficult.

This is the only baseball game available for the 360. It's a shame because it is terrible. Save your money and buy Oblivion or Tomb Raider instead.

Give it a chance...

Before I purchased the game initially I read some of the reviews on amazon.com. To be honest I really didn't care what anyone had to say because I knew that I would purchase it regardless. However, people made some important insights.

Cons- There are certain flaws in the gameplay. For example the commentators tend to say the wrong thing at times; things that aren't even close to the situation. Another con I would say is that the controls are pretty difficult. Things that were basic in the EA sports versions are made much more complicated in this game.

Pros- Despite the cons, I absolutely love this game. I'm not a gamer at all; I only buy sports games, and even then I'm pretty amature. After practicing for a bit, you start getting a hang of the controls. Pitching is a blast in my opinion. Once you understand that you need to place the cursor where you want it to break you can go nuts with it. Offensively the swing stick (once you get the hang of it) can be a lot of fun. Trying to guess the pitch also becomes fun as you get the hang of the game. Plus the graphics are insanely good. Each player's tendencies are almost spot on.

The reason I rated the game so high is because when you get a better hang of the controls the game allows you to control every aspect of the game. I disliked the game immensely when I first bought it, but after giving it a chance, I'm hooked. The more I play I learn new controls that make the gameplay so much fun. Just force yourself to give it a chance and get into each pitch, each at bat, and this is an amazingly fun game.

Worst Baseball Game Ever

I was really looking forward to this game since their older baseball games were fun and only cost 19.99. Well since they have the rights to the MLB games now, I figured it would be worth it to pay 59.99 for it. The biggest mistake ever. The graphics look like PS2 at best, the players move slow so it's impossible to make catches and big plays, the batting sucks and takes a long time getting used to. Another big complaint is the camera, the angles are horrible and make the game boring. DO NOT waste you money on this game. I'm just gonna have to wait till next year for a decent baseball game.

WOW! What a disapointment

Just plain terrible. The Graphics are very poor, especially for the 360, and they are so bad they begin to distract from the game right from the begining. But the real problem is that the gameplay is even worse. Fielding is terrible, player controls are terrible, and baserunning is a joke. The pitching and hitting controls are the only savior. The designers took a fresh approach to the sport and I did actually like their ideas. However, they just can not make up for the rest of the flaws. This title just looks and plays as though it was rushed to the shelves. On top of all of this, player ratings are a complete joke. Anyone with any knowledge of the sport could have done a better job here.
All and All do yourself a favor and pass on this game. Maybe next year we can get a little competition and maybe multiple baseball titles to choose from.

I have been waiting 3 months for this game, what a joke. MLB the show for PSP blows this game away. All i kept hearing about was how good the graphics are going to be. None of the players look like real players, the hitting controls are a joke, and the fielding anamations are horrible. Please MLB, give back the money 2k sports gave you for the rights to make the game so real players like EA sports and other software companys can make a MLB game.

MLB gaming for the next decade is ruined.

Ok, so maybe its not that bad, but this game sure is a waste of money. Now that 2k sports has the MLB license i guess you can forget about playing a realistic/fun MLB game for the rest of the decade and beyond.
All of the problems listed in the other reviews are accurate. I would also like to add a few problems and glitches with the game. There are several occurences where you you sign or trade for a pitcher, and cant set him in any of your rotation or relief slots. He is listed as on the roster, but just cant be accessed. Also, the player ratings are terrible. I'm not sure how to explain how bad the ratings are, but one example is that a player you draft out of high school starts with a higher rating than an allstar from last year.
The bottom line, is that unless they vastly improve the game for next years version, they have a good shot at going bankrupt because nobody who buys this game will ever buy another 2k sports baseball game.

What a Shame...This Could Have Been a Great Game!

I'm so mad that a company can put out such a piece of junk that I think there has to be a law against it. If I wasn't able to return my game, I would have joined the hundreds of others filing complaints with the BBB and other officials.

Here is the information you need to know. Don't buy this game. The graphics are not what one would expect for a next generation console. Movements are choppy and the new "clothing physics" just look like there is an alien trying to pop out of their bodies. The game play is clumsy with fielders bouncing off the walls and laying on the ground and not being movable. Don't get me started on the pitching -- there are more inside the park home runs in one game than the entire baseball season last year. The announcing is inconsistent with bad information - players are announced with no statistics - like "David Ortiz" hit no home runs last year" or "Mariano Rivera has no saves last year." I'm not sure what Take2 Interactive and Kush Games actually thought they would accomplish by making such an unplayable game other than ripping off the public.

The game regularly freezes and can result in lost data for your other games. That's right, folks. Check out some of the Take2 forums to see how many people are dissatisfied with this game. MLB made a huge error in giving Take2 Interactive this license. For $60, you too can have what amounts to a coaster. Until the problems are fixed, don't buy this game. Put it on the DL or send it down to the minor league where it belongs.

Only gave 1 star in both colums because you can not give 0 stars. Froze like all the others. I am not taking 2k6 advice and buy a memory card(40 buck) delete all my games is the other option. We can put a man on the moon but can not make a video game that does not freeze. What makes this worse is that the game was delayed to get the "kinks' worked out. JOKE!!! 0 is the final score

2K Sports obviously isn't trying very hard.

I may as well start with the good things. The batting and pitching interfaces in this game are great. Holding back/releasing the R stick is a lot more involving and intuitive than just pressing the A button, and the Batter's Eye adds some extra depth to it. Pitching is extremely frustrating until you change the pitching system to "Zone", which I highly recommend. It's the best pitching interface I've ever used. Both the batting and pitching interfaces make sure the challenge lies in your skill level and your strategy, rather than your ability to figure out the system.

Now the bad.

1. As everyone knows by this point, the game likes to lock up after the third or fourth inning. This can usually be avoided by loading another game to the title screen and then putting the MLB 2K6 game back in, but the fact that I even have to do this is kind of a drag.

2. The fielding is ridiculous. While playing this game, you shouldn't think of your fielders as human beings, but cars instead. If you're running back, you can't suddenly break left. You have to come to a complete stop and make a 270-degree turn before you do. If you try to adjust your man just a few feet to catch a routine fly, you'll usually end up messing up and putting him out of range, so it's best to just leave him standing there and hope he makes a shoestring catch.

3. The baserunning is twice as bad as the fielding. Every game dating back to RBI Baseball for the NES has done a better job than this game in this department. You queue up your bases, meaning if you hit an outfield single and press "advance base", it has the runner go to second. Press it again and he'll run to third; again, to home. This wouldn't be so bad, except a) the base queue indicator is so small that you can't read it without taking off your attention to look straight at it, b) the queue will sometimes go up and down without you doing anything, and c) even if a baserunner is queued for third and he slides in safe on a close play at second, he'll still get up, practically dust himself off, and just start loafing it to third for the easy out. I'm sure it was all in good intentions, but it's just horrible.

4. So I endure about a dozen freeze-ups, about 25 instances of Andruw Jones juking himself out of the ball in center field, and about 5 billion instances of Edgar Renteria getting up from a slide and jogging to third with the second baseman standing on base with the ball. I finally win a game. Then a glitch prevents me from saving the game. So it's all gone. Things like this are enough to make you resolve to never play the game again.

The only thing that keeps this from a one-star review is the progress made in the batting and pitching systems. Overall, it's a terribly executed game. Graphically it's not bad, but clearly an uninspired port-up from the previous-gen versions. EA's MVP series isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. I don't know the specifics of how long 2K Sports has exclusivity of MLB sponsorship, but let's hope we don't have to suffer through their games anymore and actually get a studio making MLB-licensed games that knows what it's doing.

Based solely on this game, I don't see myself buying another 2K title again.
