There's something about old-school fighters that bring a smile to our faces. Perhaps it's the abundance of overblown, yet very satisfying, dexterous abilities the fighters have, or perhaps the simplistic nature of moves available to you.
Whichever the reason, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum harkens back to the glorious days of the 2D fighting arena, ultimately delivering the goods in a rather great package. This is NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, SNK's answer to game Capcom Fighting Evolution. Don't get me wrong, the whole idea and concept were what all 2D fighting fans dreamed of, the ultimate dream match. The problem with that game? Capcom put no work or effort into it and it showed. So now, SNK show's Capcom how it's done. NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is a characters from various SNK games thrown into one great game and the roster is as follows.

Kyo Kusanagi

Graphics: 4/5
Surprise, SNK has redone all of the characters in this game. Many characters from old games like World Heroes, received a much needed updates. A couple characters, namely Mr. Karate and Robert Garcia, received a totally new look, while everyone else was updated to hi-res. This is already a very good sign showing us that SNK is actually giving it's fans what they want. The result is not disappointing. The game is 2D, as SNK is known for, but some stages seem fully 3D. The 3d rendered stages are very nicely done. There are lots of cameos of characters from various SNK games in the background, such as Kain from Garou Mark of the Wolves and the Ikari warriors can be seen also.
Content: 5/5
SNK fans dream come true. The roster packs 36 characters (plus 4 unlockable bosses). The majority consist of fan favorites and main characters and villains from various SNK titles as I listed above. Two of the characters Yuki and Ai are original characters made just for this game. This game also contains four bosses, each from a different SNK game, such as Mizuchi,an Orochi look-alike, which was the boss of KoF 97, Neo Dio from World Heroes, King Leo (Shishio) from Kizuna Encounter, and the final boss, Goodman. This game is packed full of fan service. Of course you can't fit in everyone that people want, but the selection of characters is very good indeed.
Gameplay: 4/5
There are several mode of play but for the most part you'll more than likely only be playing 2 of them Arcade mode and Tag Battle.
Arcade mode is the arcade game. You engage in a series of two on two tag matches until the final boss battle. Though, there is a slight twist to the established formula. Rather than giving you a pre-set number of matches before reaching the final boss, a timer counts down throughout the game and once zero hits, you automatically face the boss. Also you're health doesn't refill after each match and if one of your team dies it's game over. This is a refreshing alternative to the usual routine, though it may be a mild turn-off to some players who prefer to keep things traditional.
Tag Battle retains the familiar procedure; a pre-set number of matches and regaining health between matches before the final boss fight.
Arcade Vs. is the usual two-player arcade mode and Practice allows you to hone your skills. Survival Challenge pits you against consecutive opponents until your health depletes and Gallery allows you to view game-related artwork.
Also to those wondering the US version has win quotes and endings.
Now the real question is, since each of the games characters who made it into this game plays totally differently, how do you find the perfect way to fit them all together? The answer is simple. The matches are fought in tag-team style 2 Vs 2. You can tag your partner at anytime during a fight, while your partner recovers their red portion of their life. Unlike the Capcom VS. series, the red portion of your life in this game is quite large, and a switched out team mate near death may end up coming back with near full life. Which comes the part of the tag team attack. This attack doesn't consume any super gauges, but rather a whole separate method. This attack can only be done if both you and your partner are alive, and if it connect, it will barely scratch your opponent, but greatly damage the red portion of the targets life. And to give a more beneficial use for this attack, once connected, your partner's life bar will glow, hence if you tag him in this instant, he'll be fighting with raised attack power for a short while. Instead of the KoF's classic rolling, each characters can do a zip forward. It dodges attacks like rolling does, but you can't bypass your opponent to his back with it. This move consumes half a gauge and can't be abused. Your super gauge recovers by itself slowly as many moves beside supers will consume the gauge, such as the guard cancel and certain special moves. Those are the basics for everyone. Now to the series, each characters has the ability of what their game titles are known of. This means, Haohmaru and Genjuru and go in rage mode, increasing their already high attack power further at the cost of 3 super gauges. The Last Blade warriors can do their deflect attack as a special move available only to them. Some Fatal Fury characters can do minor chain combos like they could in their respective game. To top it all off, the game is balanced. Of course no game is perfectly balanced and some characters will prove to have an edge over others, but not so much that they are unbeatable.
Music/Sound: 4/5
The music for the most part n this game are pretty good. The sound effects however are great. Many are re-used from previous games, but some characters are redone. The punch, kick and grabs all fits in perfectly with their sound effect.
Replay Value: 4/5
There isn't a lot to do by yourself in this game, beating the tag team mode will earn an artwork of the characters you beat the game with, and survival has 4 bosses you can unlock. After that there really isn't much else to do. Except play one of the best fighting games out there and try out different combinations of teams and there are so many possible styles to play this game thanks to the huge variety of characters universe.
Final Thoughts:
If you are a 2D fighting game fan, this game is highly recommended. If you are an SNK fan, then you'll already have this game at the time of reading this. The only real problem is that not everyone will be able to find this game at their local retail game store, but if you keep at it you'll find it and you will be very pleased with your purchase. This game is highly recommended to any fighting game fan out there.
Final Score: 4/5
This game would've gotten a 5/5, but since it's a bit hard to find here in the U.S. I've deducted a point for that.
Fun and flashy fighter

SNK Playmore continues their line of solid, classic 2-D fighters for the PS2 with NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, which is by far the flashiest, and perhaps the most fun, of the bunch yet. NeoGeo Battle Coliseum features a horde of fighters from various SNK games: Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Last Blade, and even Metal Slug among others can be found here. What really makes NeoGeo Battle Coliseum so fun is that it is surprisingly easy to pick up and play. Even if you are a novice to the style of SNK's fighting games, you won't have too much of a problem getting into the gameplay and fighting mechanics. However, this also showcases the biggest flaw of the game as well: the fighting engine itself isn't very deep. Compared to SNK's own recently released King of Fighters XI, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum's fighting system can't even compare. That aside, Battle Coliseum is more about flashy, beat 'em up action than a deep and involving enginge, and the character sprites are big and well animated, as are the backgrounds. It should also be noted that Battle Coliseum suffers from a ridiculously hard, and cheap, end boss; which has been a signature of SNK's fighters for years now. That aside, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is a wonderful 2-D fighter that longtime fans of 2-D fighters and SNK's library will get much enojoyment out of for sure.
Got it today, and it rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! snk's finest jewel

im proud to be the first to drop the reviews, on this masterpiece. best graphics, very flashy, fighters look great ( my favorites, the samurai showdown dudes). different endings, artworks, character designs, THE WORKS!!!!!!... I thinks its nicer than kof 2007 but thats just my opinion...only one little thing i didn't like. there are pauses between rounds, thats a little annoying, unlike kof xi that does not..i just wish the fights were consecutive like kof xi, but still that doesn't take the glory out of it. it still kicks butt. im new to this puppy, i heard you can do tag team damage, like 2 vs 1 but that i still have to learn. other than that, this game is very, very, very rare..no gamestop in miami has it yet, probably is low in print...well, what i mean by that is ,,if you can get it in amazon for 14.99, dont even think it twice..grab your copy today, cause its the best snk game on the market period!!!!!
Another SNK hit that will be a classic.

I'll get right to the point, this title is a total hit, great graphics and gameplay with the option to configure your controller during play so you can chose the right configuration of buttons to hack, slash, punck, kick or super special your foe, with many options this title offers, it will keep you quite busy especially unlocking the extra characters in this game, if you love fighting games and whether or not your an SNK fan this title will not dissapoint.

This game first caught my eye the first time I'd seen it (in early 2006, I was watching G4's "Cinematech" show & they had a couple of clips from this game; it was the japanese PS2 version).
Now that I owned it, I will say this, SNK Playmore did a good job on this game esp. if you compare this to Capcom Fighting Evolution. Many of the fighters were given much needed makeovers (unlike Capcom's game where they just recycle nearly all the fighters's sprites) & some like Robert Garica were totally madeover. We also have fighters from games that never appeared in the "King of Fighters series like the ninjas from World Heroes, & the sword fighters from Samurai Shodown & Last Blade. The Double Assaults is a great idea & should be used in all future tag-team based fighters.
As for gameplay, you can play Arcade mode where you're given 300 seconds to beat many teams as you can but only one team member needs to be KOed to go on to the next team. Every 3 teams you beat you can choose to restore your life, add more time on the clock, or fill up your power stock but once you used one, you can't pick it again. When time runs out you fight one of 4 bosses. Who you fight depends on how you did those previous 300 seconds (the one fighter down you lose rule still applies).
Then there's tag play which feels more like Marvel vs Capcom; beat both team members to go to the next team. And in Survival Challenge, you fight tag team after tag team until both your fighters gets KOed in a match.
The 3-D backgrounds are very nice. Favs are the underwater stages, the underground mine one (with the robot chasing you in the background) & the dragon stages (despite the slowdown that does happen here). The music is OK but not as rememberable as the music from SNK Playmore's (and SNK pre-2001) earier games. The highlight in the sound department are the voices (I'm a sucker for fighters with cute Japanese voices...)
And the fun factor? I actually give this game two rating here; 1 player: 3 stars; 2 players: 5 stars, thus 4 stars overall. Once you unlock the endings (which are mostly text based), the galleries & the unlockable fighters, there's not much else you can do in this game if you're playing solo. Also, the CPU's a little easy...until you make it to any of the bosses who are very cheap. However with two players, you & a friend will be playing this game for hours on end.
PS About the load times, the Japanese & PAL versions of this game had long loading times. This is not an issue in the American version so don't let that keep you from buying this game if you're interested.

A great mixture of Snk classic character roaster.
The fighting is fast paced and steady. The moves are easy to pull off,
great control over the characters.
Should have been more characters though to choose from.
Otherwise an excelent fighting game to the Snk universe.
Most notably my favorite is the Samurai & Last blade dudes.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum is a dream match from SNK-Playmore; it combines all of their major games into one. Namely Fatal Fury(including Mark of the Wolves), King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Last Blade 2!, the not too well known World Heroes, and even Metal Slug, there are also 2 original characters: Yuki and Ai, pictured on the cover.
Needless to say there are a ton of characters, but is the game engine up to par? The answer is a definite yes, it manages to create a different feel from KOF (the mainstay of SNK) and from all their other games without getting too gimmicky. The basis is that you select 2 characters, with the ability to switch them in and out, they can also do a tag attack super move of sorts. There are also some secret combination attacks.
One of the good things about this game is that it should appeal to both hardcore and casual players very easily. Hopefully SNK-PLaymore will continue to release great 2D fighters outside of Japan.
More Great Games From SNK!!

I like the fact that SNK continues to come out with wonderful games to keep their fans interested. This game has great re-playability and lots of characters that I hoped would be playable from the SNK franchise. If you love fighters then you'll love Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
