This game has the RPG elements of leveling, and the fighting elements of being able to do more than just one attack. You can learn many fighting skills as well as breath skills. Overall I gave this 3-stars because: it is easy to catch on debris, it is hard to land properly because the screen might consider a cliff area part of the abyss causing you to die when you properly landed, and many secret areas have nothing to them.
It takes about 2 days to get through the game with a maxed out level.
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had always wanted to try a spyro game and this one was great. It is definitely worth the price, believe me. This game is great for not only people who have never played a spyro game, but it is also great for experienced people who have played spyro all their life. It's a great challenge, and it has great bosses. It seems like the excitement never ends. Great game!!!!!!!!!!!!! I highly recomend buying it!! And no, I'm not an actor. haha
Fun for New RPGers - Spyro Fans might feel Let Down

Spyro, the purple dragon, has been a favorite of mine since he first came out. Now he's flying, romping and bashing his way through a shadow realm.
If you're used to the more modern games, the first thing you'll notice here is that it is a pretty - but flat - display. You get a really odd "slanted, from the forward, top down" view not seen in pretty much any game. It makes the proportions of the room very odd and at times very hard to figure out. Is that line in the back of the room a wall, or is it a higher level of a shelf?
The backgrounds of the outdoor scenes are really pretty, in a sort of water color sort of way. You walk or run around, charging at enemies, talking to friends, and performing the quests or tasks as necessary. I expect a hobbit to plod around slowly, but when I'm playing Spyro, I expect the little purple dragon to be alert and agile. It's much more frustrating to see him plod along slowly, getting stuck on the corners of walls, or moving into a "fast walk" for the charge action.
They did add more complexity to the game by adding in some RPG style elements. You earn experience points by killing off enemies, and you use those to build up your Spyro character. The lower screen lets you perform traditional RPG activities - manage your inventory, look at a general map, track your progress - while the upper screen is your general gameplay area.
On sound, the game is reasonably OK. It doesn't stand out in any way, but it's not awful either.
For people who are fond of the previous Spyro games, with their great three dimensional graphics and focus on arcade quality gameplay, will probably be disappointed here. It is sluggish and relatively low quality for the DS's capabilities. On the other hand, for players who are new to RPGs, this is a cuddly, easy to learn RPG that draws you into it with lots of explanation and hand holding.
Recommended for those seeking to learn how RPGs work!
Different but cool

I first played Spyro 2 gateway to Glimmer when I was 6, now I'm 9 and I have practicly all of his games. The story lines are good and so are the graphics but Spyro Shadow Legacy has the most mysterious game I've ever played its also got spooky graphics. It's probably the best spyro game they have ever made apart from Spyro a Heros Tail and Enter the dragonfly.
A so so game

It's so lame, all because of the chracters' movements. It's like, they walk forward, and when they try to turn, they pause. Then they turn around in the same place. Then they go. But Spyro runs faster. The other thing is that Spyro runs so slow, not like in the other games. It's the most boring game ever to me, but maybe to you it won't be. At least I think the background is good! Good job Spyro the Shadow Legacy makers! Woo hoo! Two thumbs up for the background and the good looking monsters, but they would look better with ties and suits.
Lackluster title.......in other words boring

Spyro the Dragon was a great title I played as a little girl on the PS.Since then,I've played other games on other systems and I've drifted from the Spyro series.A few days after I received my DS,however,I received this game as a gift.I eagerly started the game with the expectation of it being as I remembered the series to be.I played the game with an open mind, but I couldn't help comparing it to past Spyro games. In other words,I didn't like. The storyline was slow paced and the game simply no fun for me.You save dragons and so on and you learn new moves as the game progresses, but overall, the game is not too enjoyable.I'm not a fan of GBA style graphics but I have to admit that the bakground was very smoothly drawn out.Other than that,I do not recommend this game. But give it a chance if you'd like anyways!

I'll admit, with the strength of the Nintendo DS, Spyro could have easily been done in a 3-D aspect, like Super Mario 64 DS and Rayman DS. Yet, for some reason, Vivendi Universal & Amaze Entertainment deemed it wise to make this Spyro game like the Gameboy Advance games(why they changed the developer from Digital Eclipse, now called Backbone Entertainment, to Amaze Entertainment is beyond me). In my personal opinion, that's not such a bad thing....I loved the Gameboy Advance titles moreso than the console versions. I was pleased to know that this game followed that direction. Yet, while the Gameboy Advance games were fun and faithful to the original adventures on the PS1 with high production values, this adventure seems decent at best. While the storyline is a good one, there are several things that bring down the fun. Things like a chuggy engine, sluggish action at times, poor collision detection, and even text that appears on both screens saying exactly the same thing at the same time make this a game that feels poorly made, a game that clearly could have used more time in development. If the game had alot of these issues ironed out before release, this Spyro game could have been a really good one. Even so, I had the patience to make it through the game. I can't honestly say it was worth what I paid for it. I was somewhat disappointed with the game.
I really love the handheld Spyro games. If Vivendi Universal intends on releasing more games for the Nintendo DS or any other platform for that matter; they clearly ought to stay on the developers to insure that they make a quality game worthy of the franchise name. We, as gamers, expect that out of our favorite videogame characters.
It's not, entirely, a waste of a game. It has it's good points like better, crisper graphics and lush environments to play in. But, it's one game that I, as a reviewer, should say...if you can overlook the flaws- it's not too bad a game. Just don't expect the kind of production that the Gameboy Advance games were.
Great Game!

After years of playing Spyro games on the Playstation,I was ecstatic that there was a Spyro game in the DS platform.I expected a full 3D enviroment complete with first person action, components that I adored on the Playstation versions of Spyro. But what I got was neither. The game differs greatly from other Spyro games I've played before. You control Spyro from what I would call an aerial view. You control Spyro's movements but you're not at the foot of the action. And the background is like a picture,it doesn't move, only the character does.I haven't even gotten through the first level yet and I can say that I won't enjoy the coming levels. In the beginning of the game, you save four elder dragons that help you in learning spells and special moves. This became extremely tedious for me.All in all,I would not recommend this games for others. This games is really not fun for me but possibly for others. All I can say is think twice before purchasing.
