Great action/shooter for the DS

Scurge: Hive puts you in the role of a female bounty hunter in space named Jenosa taking on alien parasitic organisms. Yes, that's Scurge: Hive, not anything with the word Metroid in the title. Despite the derivative storyline, Scurge: Hive for the DS provides some great action and shooting elements that fit right at home on the DS. The overhead isometric view of the game provides for plenty of fun shooting elements to go along with exploration and puzzle solving. Throw in some memorable boss battles to go along with the fluidly animated and colorful graphics and you get one of better recent action/shooters to come out on the DS. What stops Scurge: Hive dead in it's tracks from being an instant classic is that you will backtrack a lot, and I mean a lot. Combine that with the fact that the shooting and puzzle elements will eventually get boring the longer you're in the game, and that stops Scurge: Hive from being a must own. Not to mention that there is a time limit tied into Jenosa's health, which you must constantly find medical stations to refill, which will either add degrees of challenge or frustration depending on the gamer. That aside though, Scurge: Hive is still a great game for DS owners looking for some great action. The game is also available for the GBA as well, which runs a cheaper price tag but looks pretty much identical to the DS version, although the screen is smaller and the map isn't always displayed. Not to mention that for some reason, and maybe this is just me, but Scurge: Hive just feels more at home as a GBA game than on the DS, but that's jsut me. All in all, no matter which version you get, Scurge: Hive is a more than solid action/shooter that should be checked out.

Good game, but needs more flash

I have good fun playing this game, the history is good (if you like sci-fi) the dialogues are funny and the action is constant. What I feel out of place are the graphics, they are very similar to a game boy advance game. I know that the game was launched for the GBA but using the same graphics having more processor capacity is a little lazy from the development part. The map in the lower screen is good, havĂng a 2 screems game play is risk, so I have no complains about That.

In resume, a good game, great action, good control, but could use better the graphic capacities of the DS

PURGE your LIVEs of this game...

If you own it...

The word "scourge" means to punish, chastise, or criticize severely, something you should be doing to yourselves if you picked up this game.

Scurge: Hive by SouthPeak Interactive did well to fly this under the radar. Much like Etrian Odyssey and other unhyped games, it just landed on the shelves of video game retailers everywhere one day. And one fateful day, I walked into EB Games and saw Scurge, and I had never heard of it before. So instinctively, I bought it. Plus, the cover had a nice yellowish-orangeish hue to it, and it looked sort of nice.

What a disappointment this was. I hate myself for spending the retail $29.99 on its release to purchase this abomination of a game. Maybe it's my critical side speaking, because the other two reviewers had pleasant things to say about the game.

The graphics are Super Nintendo at best, and I think SNES RPGs fared better in many situations. The gameplay is downright horrible, the functions are extremely clumsy, and you're stuck with a pathetic excuse for a gun that shoots little orb-like blips to kill enemies. I lasted a whole 30 minutes on the game before I started thinking about a possible way to repackage the item so I could return it for a full refund.

I always conclude my reviews with an analysis of the price of the game and what it has to do with its overall value. My purpose is to inform you whether or not I think the game is worth the price it's set at. It is for you to decide whether or not you agree with me, and for the review to be a determining factor in your hesitation to pick it up or not.

And so the price should say something about the game. After its intial $29.99 public release, it quickly fell to a meager $17.99 at EB Games / GameStops (I go to EB a lot if you didn't notice), then fell further to an unheard of $9.99. Brand Spankin New. Not used. BRAND NEW.

Ping Pals didn't even hit that low. You could pick up a brand new copy of Ping Pals for a measly $14.99. $9.99? And let me tell you, it's not even worth it at that. It should be given out for free, and even then, I don't think you should take it.

Maybe I'm being overly harsh, but it's because I paid more than 30 bucks for it and I'll hate myself forever for that.

A little confusing but GREAT!

I got this game used at GameStop for a mere $7.99. I ripped open the package as soon as I could. I shoved the game in the DS. When I started the game, I had no idea how to play, and the guy who had used it had already unlocked "Hard" mode. At the moment, he was at the final boss in Hard. Naturally a newbie who didn't know how to play got crushed by the final boss while he was INSANELY Hard. So I restarted in Normal, and up till I got to the tether I had a great time. Now I have a question. The guy didn't leave the Instruction book, so you know that room after the tether? The first room that has the Pressure plates? How do you get from the platform up to the ledge after you activate the platform and lower it so you can get on? I am stuck there.
Anyway, it's a great game but a little hard.

Like Metroid from above

I'd say this game is pretty well made, the animations are smooth (till fire oddly..), and the gameplay is classic with some added newer stuff. Though you'll have to understand, this game is pretty much the same as the one on GBA, so it's not pushing the DS graphically by any means. But that doesn't mean it doesn't look good, it plays like a Metroid game would from above, you get upgrades and different gun shots, and you save at stations (imagine that) and you gain levels as you beat enemies, though the game does have some twists to make it more difficult. You're infected with a virus, as you go your infection rate goes up, get to a save point and clear your infection before your infection reaches 100% or your HP gets drained fast.
That doesn't mean the game is timed, you have to make sure you hit save/decontamination stations along the way or you'll be drained of heath.
For the price, the game is a steal, I saw a very lengthy one star review of this and figured that it should be said how this game is. Not being critical about graphics. The gameplay is something to get used to, once you do, it's similar to Metroid. Check out some vids, best way to tell if something is good besides actually trying it.
