I'm a big fan of puzzle games, but this one just didn't appeal to me. The games got boring after a few repetitions. It needed more skill levels between easy and "normal". And what was up with the backgrounds? Seriously, the flashing animation and things zipping back and forth in the background was really distracting and annoying, not to mention a genuine seizure risk for susceptible people. Buy Tetris for the DS instead.

When it comes to some of the most addictive video games, puzzle games have always been #1 on the list. With that thought, there have been many different puzzle games that've delivered on the Nintendo DS for the past few years including Meteos, Tetris DS, and Pokemon Trozei'. There also have been some that really changed the way we play games completely like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy. But with all the good games that've been exciting, there are a few that aren't as much the challenge as they claim to be. This is definitely one of those games.

Planet Puzzle League for the Nintendo DS, is the latest game for the Nintendo DS, that relies completely on the stylus. In the game , you move colored blocks horizontally to connect three in a row of the same color. The graphics and display are absolutely dynamic, and flow through graciously in the game. The controls are also easy to use in each of the puzzles through the challenge mode, and the endless mode, where you'd have to keep playing, until your screen fills up completely, and you don't have room to link blocks. Sadly, there is a real lack of challenge in this game. You can't move your blocks up and down to make it easier to play, and the gameplay isn't as addictive as other puzzle games on the market.

All in all, I really think Planet Puzzle League feels more like it is a rental, than a must buy for the Nintendo DS. I really didn't find this game as exciting as I thought it would actually be. If you are into a better addictive game, I really suggest you play another addictive game for the system. This one just isn't one of those that doesn't seem to excite gamers enough. It just keeps you blocked in.

They say there's 15 puzzles for solo play, but it's the same game 15 ways.

I found the game to be generally well-designed. Settings can be adjusted for right-hand or left-handed play. As reviewer James F. points out, the game allows for both short-term (2-5 min) and long-term play (30~ min). There are several different modes of play including a daily play option. I liked the music but it can get a little repetitive, especially if you are playing for a long haul. However, IIRC, the music is tied into the background you are playing on, and you can change that background before starting a game (on most play modes).

As I recall, blocks of matching types in each set (of all sets) are not only distinct colors but also distinct shapes. This should be useful for those with color-blindness who would otherwise have trouble, say, telling apart the green (circle) block and red (heart) block. Additionally, before beginning play the player can usually choose their preferred set of blocks. Should you be hard of hearing or deaf, playing this game should not be difficult; the most important sound, gameplay-wise, is the one which begins to sound when the blocks are reaching the top of the screen. I don't recall if there is a visual cue which accompanies this or not, but perhaps another reviewer does?

Despite the game's slickness, I found it incredibly dull. Perhaps, as Clement Yang comments to Michael Kerner's review, I'm just bad at the game. I know for a certainty I'm not great at it, and I was never really compelled to become better. I think I may well have gotten more out of the game if I had played multiplayer--the only thing that kept me playing the game as long as I did was to master the few challenges the game cart comes with.

I gave the game to my mom. She loves it.

Not What I thought it was going to be.

I thought it was going to have multiple varieties of games to play, instead it was the same concept through out. It was not what I expected it was going to be so I was disappointed. I play it sometimes but get bored with it easily.

Excellent except for one thing...

If you've ever played Tetris Attack, Panel de pon, Pokemon Puzzle League or Challenge, or just Puzzle League, you've played this game. It's been through a bunch of different logos and characters, but Nintendo has settled on Planet Puzzle League for the latest iteration. This DS version is excellent. You will have fun playing this puzzle game, whether it's your first time or you've been playing for years. Unlike the Pokemon, Panel de pon, and Tetris Attack versions, there is no story mode in the one player mode. But, really, this game is about puzzling, not story-telling.

You can play single player or with a bunch of friends wirelessly, and you can also play against opponents online. Which is where my 'one little thing' comes in. If you have played Tetris DS, you may have noticed their online ranking system, which awards you points when you beat someone and takes points away when you lose. This is a great system and really adds to the replay value, because you can work really hard to improve your personal score. Sadly, Planet Puzzle League, although you can play online versus other people, does not have this system. There is some crazy setup where you can compare your win/loss record with people who share your same birthday (of all things!), but a regular ranking system is not there.

For this reason, I have to give Planet Puzzle League a 4 out of 5. It is a great game. It is exactly what it should be, except for no online ranking system. Which, unfortuately, is important to me. Playing someone for no ranking points is like playing poker for toothpicks. It's still poker, but who really cares? Do you want to go home with a bunch of toothpicks? No. I do not. I want to go home knowing I'm one of the best Planet Puzzle League players in all the world. But I'll never know if I am, because this fun little game can't tell me.

Fun, if familiar, puzzle blast

The minute you pop Planet Puzzle League into your DS, you'll automatically feel familiar with the game's overall gameplay aspects. If you've played games like Columns or even the original Puzzle League, you'll feel right at home here. Despite it's familiar aspects though, Planet Puzzle League still offers a good amount of fun for your DS. Using the stylus and touch screen allows you to manuver your blocks around to set up chain reactions, and actually gets old after a while thanks to the fact that there are no real rewards to earn the further you advance in the game. The real meat of Planet Puzzle League lies in the multiplayer and online options, which are second to none. Going head to head against another player is oh so much fun, and the Wi-Fi and online capabilities of the DS shines as you play against other players all over the world works surprisingly well, and when using the DS headset, you can even chat with your opponents. What kills Planet Puzzle League from being something really special is the game's overall gameplay elements, which we've seen before, and seen done better. That being said though, most of Planet Puzzle League is a great blast to play with the real meat and potatoes being found in the multiplayer options of the game, and for that alone it is worth checking out.

Good overall puzzle game

I'll start off saying that I picked up this game on a whim (on sale for $20), and in the end I got a bit more than I expected. The game mechanics are easy to learn, but there are enough advance techniques to keep the game interesting. I like the different modes (Puzzle, Daily Play, Endless, etc.), because again it adds to the re-play value. Wireless is also a big plus. I have two boys that love the DS, so we play a lot of wirelss. It is easy to handicap each player based on ability, so we have great fun playing together. I won't call it a 5-star game, because it still can't stand up to some other well known puzzle games (I'm talking about you, Tetris). But, I will say that I keep coming back for more. I've had is for a month now, and it is still my most frequent play.

This is a great game, it's just as addicting as Tetris and that's really all that I ask... :)

Can be played for as much or as little time as you have

I'm a big fan of games which can provide a sense of accomplishment without necessitating a large time commitment. This is a perfect game to play when you need a quick break. There are many modes which you can finish in 5 minutes or less.

If you want to spend more time, there are also plenty modes that allow you to play as long as you can while the difficulty constantly increases. My wife and I are constantly trying to one up each other's high scores in the different game modes.
