THE IMMORTAL, not IMMORTALS

I was looking through that Top-Secret Passwords book when I saw this screenshot of a golden dragon--HIGHLY detailed--staring at a robed figure on a rock. At first I thought that this was an SNES title, because of the graphics. Guess what? It was for NES!!! I dare any of you people to show me an NES game with better graphics. Okay, so the graphics were good, but since we all know that that doesn't make a game, lets look at the other areas, shall we? GAMEPLAY: Pretty simple. Either you're in the 45 degree angle view avoiding bats and traps or you're in the battle mode where you stab and defend yourself with your knife. SOUND: There are some good tunes in this game, some of which I'd say are worth downloading in midi format. The music sets the mood very well. DIFFICULTY: This is where the game starts to lose its momentum. This game is HARD. Flying the magic carpet is nigh impossible, the traps can be DREADFULLY difficult at times--especially the part with the worms where you need the worm sensor. The last battle with the dragon demands nothing more than timing. Even being able to see the crystal slots at the end of the level is hard. OTHER: The animation in this game is as good as stuff I've seen on SNES. The other area where this game does poorly is that it is so SHORT. Games with high-level graphics tend to be short because the graphics eat up most the cartridge-space. There are only 10 or so levels in this game, some not larger than 2 or 3 rooms. OVERALL: This game could have been SO GOOD, but they kinda blew it.

Great graphics for an 8-bit NES but VERY difficult to play

I can only echo the comment the comment of the one who posted the review of this game. The graphics were simply amazing by 1990 and 8-bit NES standards but winning the game is darn near impossible. More often than not, you'll end up killed by spikes, worms, acid, an enemy too strong for your abilities. A lot of this game was poorly thought-out. For example, try flying the magic carpet without crashing in to walls or being eaten by a worm. Also there are certain rooms you can only get in to if you insert the gems just right. There's even on where you have to install the gem and run around in circles just right to reveal a ladder. Another room that's a real pain is this tunnel-like room where you paddle and try to escape the tentacles of a monster. I have never seemed to have the ability to escape those tentacles. As far as I can see, The Immortal was much better for its graphics than its playability. If you want a much easier to play RPG for the original NES with excellent graphics, you are much better off checking Shadowgate.
