This is the game that introduced me to RPG's

I got it along with a subscription to Nintendo Power. I must've been in 6th grade at the time. I wasn't impressed with the graphics (even then they weren't great), but the gameplay had me hooked! The games story is pretty standard: Kill the dragon, save the princess, find the magic sword and slay the evil wizard. It's rather simple, but addictively fun. If you have a NES laying around, get this game!

Dragon Warrior is a game of complete skill and strategy because the player has to figure out how to get to a town without dying and gaining experience at the same time. The object of the game is to defeat the dragonlord, no more to be said except that it is hard to get a high enough level to beat any minion of the dragonlord and himself.

The controls are the easiest to tell and learn, the controls are the following:
A button is the basic action it does everything, the player press A to bring up a menu of commands. In a fight it comes up automaticly.
B button cancels a command.
Start pauses the game.
Use the control pad to move the character.
Select does nothing.

This is a really fun game and I would recommend this game to people who still have a NES(Nintendo Entertianment System).

I really enjoyed this game. its fun and the simplicity of it is marvelous. its the same style as final fantasy, you take a hit then the enemy takes a hit. except there is no time limit, you can walk off and take a nap and come back and your opponent is still sitting there waiting for you to hit them. basically the kings daughter has been kidnapped by the evil and kaniving dragonlord and you have to build up your levels, obtain new items and armor, etc. only there are no other party members to do different things, just you and you alone. 12 spells are possible which you learn through experience. i would definetely recommend this game to old school gamers, kids these days would find it boring although i like simple graphics and sounds. to me ive tried playing the ff series and i just cant keep up with all the stuff.

One Console RPG To Rule Them All

Sure, the graphics are outdated, the music quality isn't so great, but then again.. it is a NES game, not to mention, this game was the first console RPG -EVER-, and that demands some respect. What followed after this? The Original Final Fantasy, the sequals, leading up to Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean 2, Baten Kaitos, so on, so forth. This is the original console RPG.

Despite the graphics and sound, this is a fun game. You walk around and level build, and as you get stronger you can venture further out into the world. Simplistic concept, sure.. but this is a fun game indeed.

The care-free game of my youth...

I too received this game with a subscription to Nintendo Power...5th grade perhaps. I'd never played an RPG before. I took the books and maps (included) with me to a family gathering, and was transfixed. So many weapons, armor, spells, shields, etc. that I was counting down the minutes before I could go home.

Without realizing that this game was significantly different than the Super Mario Brothers and Contra I was playing, I figured I'd do my best to storm through this game in an evening. It wasn't long before I realized this game would control a good portion of my spare time for the near future.

After playing all the Final Fantasy games, the later Dragon Warrior games (including the recent and wonderful Dragon Quest VIII), and others, this game still has a soft spot in my heart. With only one real twist (in the final battle with the Dragonlord), the plot might seem simple compared to modern games...but I remember feeling the desperation of the King and villagers as they inquired about my progress.

This game is the perfect introduction to RPGs for newbies and those that may have missed out on the video game scene but want to understand what it's all about. It's simple to learn, but challenging to master. By all means, pick up this game for NES, or the compilation for GBA.

Created a fantastic series - best of the best.

I can't help but love this game since it was my first RPG, back in the day, and one I always compare others to. Graphics are of course limited, but given it's relative age, I think we can all look past that.

The story is simple, but, again, at this point you will want to play the game to see the foundation for the later games in this series. (Indeed, in other series' as well.) One of the best selling RPGs of all time - this has truly earned every accolade it has received.

A classic game. But does it hold up to modern times?

I love Dragon Warrior. Please do not get me wrong. When this game was new, it introduced all of us to a different style of video games. We no longer had "snap reactions" and button mashing. Instead, avenues like strategy and exploration became much, much more important. Dragon Warrior, for its time, was fresh and very different. I recommend playing this game for everyone who wants to see how the video game RPG started.

But did this game hold up? Unfortunately no. The controls are clunky. There's a lot of difficulty with the menus which future Dragon Warriors took care of. The graphics are decent enough...the sound looks every 8 seconds, so you can imagine how annoying it gets...

But still..sigh :-)
