If you wish to own it wait

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 4

It will be rereleased on the psp and will have a sequel on a console system. Though they have not been announced in the states it may be better to wait and see instead of shelling out $100 for a used copy of the PS edition. It is by all means one of the best PS1 games and should be atleast tried by all rpg fans

My favorite Playstation game

Maybe it's my Norse blood, but I've always thought Valkyries were supercool. And an RPG with a female hero makes me jump for joy. The premise is completely original and compelling; as a Valkyrie, you must collect recently dead souls for the war of the gods. Many of the character's back stories are moving, and they are all sad since they all die early. (I found the mermaid Yumei's story especially compelling.) There's a lot of voice acting, but most of it is good (except in the intro) and some of it is oustanding. The graphics are very nice too.

But the truly great thing about Valkyrie Profile is the gameplay. There are no random battles; all the monsters are on the screen for you to see. Treasure drops aren't random, either. If you can get your four battling characters (Lenneth Valkyrie and three others) to "juggle" an enemy, you have a very good chance of getting a treasure. Unlike most RPGs, you actually have something to do during battle; the timing of button pressing is extremely important, and it never gets repetitive or dull. And outside of battle, there's a lot of Megaman-type jumping and puzzles going on. There are three modes: Easy, Regular and Hard. There's no real reason to play "Easy" unless you need to familiarize yourself with the game, but with multiple endings and different dungeons in Regular and Hard modes, there's every reason to return.

There are many more wonderfully original and perfectly executed things about this game, but I can't describe them here. I just hope there's a sequel to this often-overlooked, outstanding game.

Is she not perfection... this game was amazing. GREAT STORY, good game play, interesting combo attack system. Maybe the most enjoyable game I have ever played.Several endings based on how and when you do events. Very expensive now but if your up to spending for these overpriced playstation games this is the one to get.

When I bought this title a few years ago, I really didn't expect anything overly special. This is one of the few times I will gladly report that I was dead wrong. I am not a big gamer, but this is the only RPG I have played where you fully control your own destiny. Not only are there three main ways to play (easy, medium, hard), but every thing you do and every decision you make counts for something here. The designers did themselves and everyone else the greatest of favors by paying attention to the slightest details, in the gameplay and in the graphics. Overall, a wonderful experience that won't lose it's shine no matter how many times you play.

This game proves to everyone that a game doesnt have to be 3d to be fun. This is probably the best RPG that I have played in a long time. Everything about this game is great, and the music is awesome. Buy it now!

One of the best PS RPG's ever!

This is my first review. I was eagerly looking forward to this game coming out. While everybody was looking forward to Chrono Cross, this is what I was waiting for. I thought this game sounded very original. And it is. You are Lenneth Valkyrie ( A goddess) and you are sent down from Asgard (Land Of The Gods) to Midgard ( Land of the humans) to find the souls of dead warriors ( named Einherjer ) to help you in your fight to stop Ragnarok. ( The end Of the World )The characters display many different emotions on their faces as they speak. And the voice acting in this game is excellent and the characters in the game are pretty cool. ( Especially Arngrim) The battle system is quite interesting. Each of the characters in battle has their attack assigned to A different button. They are assigned to the X, Circle, Square, and Triangle buttons. You have all people attack at once or have each attack separately. If you do it right you can make some massive combos. And there is a good reason to try to get high ones. You will eventually build up enough damage to do a super move for any character. When you use it a wait meter will go up and you can not use another until it goes down. It goes down by one each round. If you keep hitting enemies you will get special gems from them. If you keep hitting them in the air you get white gems which give you a small Experience boost. If you hit them while they are down you can get purple gems which take down your wait gauge by one. When a character gains levels they get a certain amount of points to allocate to special skills and character traits. How high their traits are is important for when you are picking Eiherjer to send to Asgard. The later the chapter the higher their traits must be to go up. The game is set up in 8 chapters and each chapter consists of a certain amount of days to do things. Though there is kind off a time limit, you should never have to worry about running out of time before you do everything you can in that chapter. Time only goes by when you go into dungeons. When you go into one, two days will pass. Towns take one. Two days will aslo pass when you use your special skill to find the next Einherjer. And you have to use this to find them. Even if you know where they are. On normal and easy you have 24 days. on Hard you have 28 becuase there is more to do. because of the variations with the difficulty it you want to play though all of them to see what different dungeons you can go to. When a chapter ends you get rated by Freya and you will get items and Materialize points depending on how well you performed in that chapter. Materialize points are used for making new items instead of using money. When you are in dungeons you move around like you would in a 2-D platform game. Kind of like Castlevania Symphony Of The Night. You see the enemies before you run into them. You slash them to enter into combat. If they run into you they may surprise you. You can also make ice crystals. You use these to get to higher places and freeze the enemies. Once you complete each dungeon you will usually get a few treasures. These are to be sent to Lord Odin or your approval rating will drop. If it drops too low you get the worst ending in the game. You also have something called "Seal Value." Getting the best ending depends on this. I will end this review by saying: YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG WITH THIS GAME! If you love RPG's as much as me you should enjoy this.

Great game but misleading

I love anime people with wings (all you anime fans, watch earthian...and yes both the angels are men!) and this game promised anime wings galore!!! The game was neat-o the first time through, kinda like a warrior maker type thing with lots of references to Norse mythology (Loci, Valkyrie, Thor, Odin...the list goes on) and JAPAN...woo hoo!! The game operates on a scale of days and periods until the final battle and the end of the world. Basically that means you need to train as many characters as possible but make them strong enough to survive in battle as gods. What threw me was the ending and difficulty setting. To get the truly 'good' ending you NEED the guide. I got peeved because I usually try to beat the game without. The difficulty system is also a bit hard to understand. Hard is the best and in some ways easier than easy (which by the way you NEVER should pick) I ended up playing through twice before realizing why the ending made no sense...by then I had lost interest. If you buy the game buy the guide.

A great change and incredibly absorbing...

I got hooked on Valkyrie Profile through my brother (who is now to blame for my oversized laundry pile and my wreck of a flat! :)) -- I still haven't finished all three endings yet.

The only thing I don't like about it is that they play fast and loose with the old Norse stories, and occasionally a reference or a mistake will make me twitch (i.e. they forgot that Odin wears an eyepatch). Other than that, the graphics are beautifully drawn and integrate well. The voice acting is also superb, although you will want to strangle one or two of the Einherjar you train if you have to listen to them for very long.

The two best things about this game, though, have to be the combat system and the individual stories. Personality and background actually play a role in who is suitable for what, and you have to choose which Einherjar to send "upstairs" based on what is required and what they know (which is a refreshing change from most RPG's). The combat system is unlike anything else out there -- easy to learn and difficult to master, as someone else said. Your combat technique will CHANGE every time you reconfigure your party, because the order you do your attacks in part determines whether the next several will connect or not.

I would suggest renting the game before you buy, because it's not for everyone. If you're looking for the traditional talk-to-people-find-things-solve puzzles RPG, you will be disappointed, because this isn't like that -- seldom will you talk to living humans. However, if you're looking for something different and like character development and interaction, this game is well worth a good look.

Love the ending

I just completed this game, I played it twice because ending B left me longing for more so I tried for the A ending, and wow I'm surprised, so much drama I loved it. Hoping for a sequel, if you read the reviews on this site you will notice how different this game is, I wish I would have bought this game when it came out in 2000, it's 2005 now, I truly regret not buying it, this game is amazing, so amazing I rank it up there in my list 1.Xenogears 2.Final Fantasy Tactics(tie)Valkyrie Profile 3.Chrono Cross. If your tired of the same boring stuff like the Final Fantasy Series I suggest you get this game, it has a good storyline which the FFS (except FF3)lack. Like Xenogears this game will become an underground classic beloved by those who have it and played it.

Please Don't Miss It

This is the second best RPG EVER (Square Final Fantasy VII being the best of all time).
Why? cuz it has a great great story and wonderful characters. Lenneth is the greatest heroine ever. i cared for my characters so much like they were real and not fictitious. I WAS LITERALLY LIVING THE GAME. What else do you want form your RPG?

And the gameplay, is actually fun. This is the only RPG besides Vagrant Story that has a cool and original battle system. All the other software companies are copying from Square. Hell, even Square in some way or another is copying from its older games with the exception of Vagrant Story and few others.

the other reviewers have mentioned how great the graphics and the soundtracks are, and i totally agree with them. Don't let the 2D side-scrolling turn you off. It's really beautiful. Valkyrie's animation is much better than Alucard's in Symphony of The Night and she moves smoothly like a Disney character.

The soundtarck is, hands down, the best RPG soundtrack ever. Better even than that of the much acclaimed Final Fantasy Tactics.

Please do yourself a favor and play this game.
If you are an RPG gamer, believe me you won't regret it.
