really good Bond game

This is a review for the Playstation version of The World Is Not Enough.

Unbelievable. That's all I have to say after reading one negative review after another for this game. I HIGHLY disagree with all the people who hate it. Let's sort through all the reasons people put the game down, and see if they're actually true:

- No multiplayer. Big deal. It wouldn't hurt anyone to play a game by themselves for a change. Let's all bash Super Metroid too, because it's only one-player. Give me a freakin' break.

- Horrible play control. WRONG! It's *exactly* the same as Medal of Honor and Quake II. Okay, sometimes when going around a turn you might get stuck on an imaginary object on the side of the hallway (and stop moving completely until you straighten yourself out) but I can seriously think of a bunch of games that are MUCH worse off than this. Try Duke Nukem: Time to Kill for the ultimate example of "bad play control". Leave this game alone, for crying out loud. I can move Bond around through the game perfectly almost 100% of the time. Even if it feels weird the first time controlling Bond in a first-person shooter, you'll adjust with time.

- Weak animations from guards dying. ANOTHER huge exaggeration. NOT TRUE. When you shoot and kill a guard in The World Is Not Enough, they actually copy some of the spectacular-looking animations from Medal of Honor. How the heck can people criticize this? I'm not sure. Okay, sometimes the guards move around a little blocky, but what can you expect from a Playstation One game? Besides, it feels like an arcade game this way.

- Short levels, short game overall. Yes, I can agree with this... to an extent. But putting down a video game because of its length is overrated anyway, unless it's EXTREMELY short (like, if a game takes less than 1 hour to complete). However, The World Is Not Enough takes at LEAST an hour and a half to finish. Let's not forget about that darn blackjack game where you have to make $100,000 in order to progress to the next level. It might take you a long time to win that much money.

- Repetitive music. This is a gigantic mystery to me. Each of the 11 levels have at least four different theme songs (memorable ones, too). It's not just ONE theme song throughout the entire game like so many reviewers seem to believe. I have no idea what people are complaining about. I really don't.

- Having to sort through items and weapons. This isn't a problem either. There's two ways you can do this. You can either hit the Square or Triangle buttons and skim through everything you have, or, for people who hate sorting through things, you can simply press the Start button and scroll down to where it says Inventory, and find what you're looking for right there (easily and conveniently). There is not a single problem sorting through weapons in this game.

- Too many unnecessary gadgets. Not really true. Everything you carry in your item list has a purpose. Sometimes you might experience a bit of overkill when it comes to having to use some of these items on several occasions in order to finish a level (Level 5 especially) but other than that, it's not a big enough deal to complain about it.

- Not enough shooting. Again, not really true. Sure, compared to Medal of Honor's 20-some levels filled with plenty of guards, this game probably feels a little empty. Not comparing The World Is Not Enough to anything and just accepting it the way it is reveals a really good action-packed game. You use stealth probably only two or three times in the entire game. The rest of the time is spent shooting.

You know something cool about this game nobody even mentions? You have the option to PUNCH guards and knock them out if you run out of bullets. I ran out of tranquilizer bullets in Level 5 for example, and had an absolute blast going around punching everyone to death. This is a nice extra touch to an already above average game.

Like I said to a friend the other day- the only reason people are bashing this game is because it's not at the same level of brilliance as Goldeneye on the N64. Big deal. Do you really think it's possible to surpass such an awesome game? Yeah it's possible, but it hasn't happened that much, I can tell you that. Only about 10 games in the last seven years managed to surpass Goldeneye's amazing gameplay. The World Is Not Enough was never intended to be "the number one most influential game". It was intended to satisfy fans of Bond games and fans of first-person shooters and in that respect, the game works just fine.

The variety of levels in this game is, for the most part, pretty good. It's surprising to me that the very first level requires you to quietly move around guards and cameras and NOT be seen by them. Most games start off with a basic shooting level. Not this game. However, your urge to shoot everything you see will come in handy as soon as Level 2. You will be shooting guards left and right, and the guns you can carry are really spectacular to watch, and effective on dangerous guards. There's a nice selection of guns overall.

The games difficulty ranges from really easy and short (Levels 1 and 2) to EXTREMELY hard (the last two levels of the game). The only inconsistent level in the game would be Level 3, because the end of that level is pretty tough. This is the skiing level. By the way, this is actually a pretty fun level. It's not mindlessly going down a snowy hill like some people will try and tell you- you have to ski the right way in order to collect bullets that are located on the ground, and while doing this, you have to either shoot or dodge guards who are hiding behind crates. Not mindless at all.

I love this game. I don't know what's wrong with the people who hate it. You really have to stop comparing everything to Goldeneye. Time to move on. The only possible problem I can find with this game is when you reach the end of a level, and the final obstacle isn't always clear what you have to do. You can find those answers on the internet though, so it's not a big deal. Great game. I'm glad I own it.

With difficult controls, lousy graphics and repetitive music, this game is a mockery of the great James Bond.Don't waste your money on this worthless shooter-if you want REAL James Bond, buy the movies instead.

This in my opinion is not a very good game! It has poor graphics poor gameplay and does not follow the storyline! Some of the mission are so ridiculous that there not even worth trying!

No multiplayer yes no multiplayer! This is a bad version of the game! If you want a good version of this game get it on N64 it has multiplayer and alot of others!
This in my opinion is not good!

"The World is not Enough" is a true James Bond game as it has high speed action all throughout as u follow the adventures of the world's top secret agent. The game follows the storyline of the movie and even has superb clips from the movie before and after each level of the game as an extra bonus. The graphics are also great for a ps-one game and it exceeds the expectations I had of it.The game offers over 20 high-teach, way cool gadgets from Q's lab. There is also an improved AI from the other James Bond games as characters have more realistic features which make them seem more human-like.This game is one of the best games on the ps-one console and as usual I hope - JAMES BOND WILL RETURN

Very enjoyable but flawed

After a foray into the third person shooter genre that received mixed responses, EA brought Bond back into the first person with a game based on The World Is Not Enough. What they ended up with is an enjoyable yet flawed game. While it's unfair to compare it to Goldeneye for Nintendo 64, perhaps the definitive Bond game, most people who have played Goldeneye will probably see this as a somewhat unsuccessful attempt at recreating the success of that game...perhaps a "Goldeneye lite". In fact, the Playstation version could even be considered "The World Is Not Enough lite" as it's lacking the multiplayer feature found in its Nintendo 64 counterpart. However, reviewing it on its own merits rather than a comparison to other Bond games or versions for other platforms reveals it to be a fun and entertaining game.

Graphically and sonically speaking, things are pretty good. The level graphics are fairly good and have some nice aesthetic touches, although the textures are maybe a bit blocky at times. The character graphics are quite decent for the Playstation, despite the fact that most of the enemies in any given area have the same clothes/faces. The cutscenes are full, beautifully digitized scenes taken directly from the movie. The music in the game fits the James Bond theme well. The voice acting is fairly good despite the fact that the voice actor playing Bond does a fairly laughable impersonation at times. The sound effects were generally good, too.

The controls are nice and intuitive, although the use of two buttons to cycle through your weapon/item inventory can be a bit tedious. Basically, though, everything is here...auto aim, strafing, using R1 to zoom in and aim using crosshairs... The only other complaint I have is that hit detection on items you can use is sometimes a bit off. When you walk up to an item you can use, it will have a red box around it that will turn green when you're facing it correctly. However, it sometimes requires a few seconds of adjusting your angle to get the box to turn green, which can be troublesome when you're trying to do something like bug a telephone and take off before the patrolling guard comes back.

The gameplay is a mixed bag. The game definitely does a nice job of providing variety, with levels ranging from standard shooting to sneaking around placing bugs to photographing secret documents to protecting your allies from enemy fire to sneaking around to save hostages to playing blackjack and more. However, most of these levels are fairly short, linear, and overly simple. The skiing level is especially disappointing, with skiing basically amounting to nothing more than clumsily following a narrow linear path while shooting the occasional enemy. Many gadgets are also incorporated into the game, however usually fairly poorly. The end of many levels involve certain timed situations where you have to use an item or gadget aimed at a small target to escape, get somewhere, or do something before time runs out. More often than not, these timed situations seemed to leave me saying "okay, what the heck am I supposed to do here?" and failing the mission once or twice before finally figuring it out. Another of the frustrating factors of the gameplay is that most objects are impervious to gunfire, including windows. It would be awesome if you could sneak up and take out certain guards through a window, but shooting at a window is basically the same as shooting at a wall.

The AI do a lot to both add to and detract from the gameplay. The AI do a decent job of fighting/dodging, trigger alarms when they see you, and even use radios to alert other AI to your presence. However, their responses are usually fairly predictable. They're also quite flawed, especially when it comes to using the stun gun or tranquilizer gun on them. The stun gun only knocks out enemies for about 30 seconds for some reason, yet you can sit there and stun the same enemy for an hour and he never questions why he keeps waking up on the floor every 30 seconds. There are some levels where if an AI sees you and alerts the other AI, you automatically fail the mission. However, if you can stun the AI before he gets a chance to radio the others, he'll wake up on the floor 30 seconds later and it'll be like he never saw you and nothing happened. It's actually quite amusing but sort of kills the whole realistic AI factor.

The game is also fairly easy, largely due to the linear gameplay and short levels. It more or less involves plowing through a level over and over until you beat it, not an overly challenging task even on the hardest difficulty level. The replay factor involves 2 different difficulty levels and cheats that can be unlocked by beating certain levels within a certain amount of time. It's also fun to go back every once in a while and play through the levels, especially more creative levels like the hostage rescue and telephone bugging levels. However, with no multiplayer and no real secrets or bonus levels, there's not a whole lot left after you finish the game.

Overall, the game is quite fun despite its flaws. Most of the levels are very enjoyable. The game basically plays a digitized scene from the movie that cuts right into the next level, based directly on the corresponding scenario from the movie. Then, when you finish the level, it ends with a digitized scene that picks up right where the level ends. This really gives you the feeling that you're playing through the movie. In fact, even people who were in the room when I was playing were actually entertained just from watching it. It's definitely worth buying (although those looking for multiplayer action might want to consider the Nintendo 64 version instead).
