And people thought 2d was dead....

SNK have made many masterpieces, Metal Slug, Metal Slug2, King of Fighters 94-2000, and the Fatal Fury series. None of these games are 3d, why? because SNK obviously believe that beautifully hand drawn, and wonderfully playable games are better than either blocky 3d graphics or all graphics no gameplay games. Metal Slug X is no exception to SNK's line of Metal Slugs. The graphics are absolutely fantastic! I just saw a review saying the graphics are very basic, tjis person has no idea. It's 2d, so what! There is so much detail thrown into the backdrops alone that you could play the game over and over just to see new stuff in the scenery. The characters are also fantastic, they have fluid motion and lots of detail. The enemy soldiers have so many little animations, they knfe/gun/grenade you and then point and laugh until you drop down again with a Machinegun, at which point they scream (with a true look of fear on thier faces) and try to run away. The bosses are massive and truly impressive like the battleship on tank tracks, after destroying the guns the front of the ship opens to reveal a MASSIVE GUN which lauches shells the size of your character! It then EJECTS THE SHELL CASE!

Enough on the graphics, theres great platforming in there too. There's also a variety of vehicles. The tank, the Plane, the Jumping mech thing, and the Camel (used for mowing arabs down in the desert). These coupled with the fast paced gameplay and the chaos on screen make for an awesome game. And if you complete it you'll love the ending.

There's the usual extras too, the art gallery and the extra missions. SO BUY IT, NOW!

Wicked 2d Contra style action!

After playing the import copy of this game I would just like to let the world know what a fantastic 2d action shooter this game is. If your a fan of great colorful 2d animation, buy Metal Slug, buy it NOW! Not only can you ride in tank and a plane but you get to also ride a camel! A CAMEL!! How messed up is that? Anyways if your a fan of great control, and games that are actually fun, this is for you.

Awesome!

No matter how you play it, Metal Slug has always been fun. Forget the Contra series, Metal Slug is 2D shooting through and through, and it always does it right. In fact, the only bumps in the MS series have been 4 and 5, but even then, they brought something new to the table and were worth a play. Unfortunately, a lot of gamers haven't played the MS series. MS was limited to NeoGeo arcade cabinets and the SNK systems that lacked mainstream success and popularity. Low and behold, the second game in the series was released for PlayStation a few years back. Granted, I'm slow to join on the MS ship, but being able to find and play Metal Slug X was a treat. It ranks as my second favorite in the series, right behind 3, and doesn't have as many frustrating parts as its sequel. In fact, there's hardly anything frustrating about it. If anything, it's how short the game is. But Metal Slug's all about getting the high score, and that's where the true challenge lies.

If you've never played a MS game before, it's simple. You take on the role of one of four soldiers: Marco, Eri, Tarma and Fio, and run around capping members of the opposing force, monsters, beasts, and aliens. It's straight up 2D shooting at its finest. There's no deep storyline to get mixed up in. There's not an FMV after every enemy you kill. And there's not a fully orchastrated soundtrack that twists your heart. All you do is run around, shoot enemies, and free captives. That's all. But as simple as it sounds, there are a lot of challenging things going on while doing this. Just when you think you're about to free a captive, an enemy you just shot stabs you as his final attack as he goes down. Actually, this won't happen as much as getting overwhelmed by the number of soldiers that appear on screen at once. There were tons of times where I'd constantly be jumping just to see where my character was, and had to chuck grenades just to clear a path. That's the other gameplay element that you're probably aware of if you've ever played a shooter- power ups. You start out with a basic pistol and a few grenades, but as you progress, there are A LOT of weapons to be found. Heavy machine guns, rocket launchers (just wait until you hear the announcer pronounce this), shotguns, enemy chasers, lasers, drop shots, Iron Lizards, and more. In addition to this, there are a number of vehicles. The main one is the Metal Slug- a small tank with a machine gun in addition to firing huge shells. It can even jump, which disposes of enemies in an instant. This sucker gives you 3 additional hits before blowing up, which is going to be a godsend more often than not. And get this, you even get animal buddies to help you out. There's the Camel Slug, of whom I've named Preston, who packs a machine gun with endless ammo. The camel rocks out, bobing its head while on the move, and jumps pretty high for some reason. Camels have never been cooler.

Sadly, the game isn't that hard, and can be beaten within an hour. I can't believe I just said that, but after I beat MS3, I was expecting something as challenging as level 5 here. There's not. The most challenging thing you'll get is making it through the last level on the same life in order to get credit for saving the captives. All of the levels can be beaten fairly fast, captives or not, and the bosses have predictable movements. Some of them are pretty cool though, like the robot that attacks from below as you scale a tower, and you have to contantly shoot down while avoiding its shots. Fortunately, the game has a ton of mini-games to play once you've completed it. There's a lot to list, so you'll just have to trust me when I tell you that they're all worth your time. Who knows, you may spend more time playing these than the main game. And the hardcore players out there will of course play until they're satisfied with their final ranking- the game keeps track of how many continues you've used. Christ, I think my first playthrough had 37 or more.

If you've seen one MS game, you know how the graphics are. Everything looks great. Dispite it looking a bit dated, the animations are smooth, and full of emotion. Check out some of the facial expressions on the opposing forces when you stab 'em. And the backgrounds are full of detail. I especially love the final level, with UFOs and planes attacking eachother, neither side truely on top. This is going on while the land below is on fire, and you're taking on a UFO mothership. Priceless. As for the sound, it's the same. The same voices and sound effects are here as they are from any other game in the series. You'll get to hear the pitiful announcer go "RAWKET LAOUNCHAIR!" when you get said power-up, and the screams when someone dies are just as painful as ever. The limited voice samples are a real treat as well. As for the music, I laughed when I first heard it. Not that it's bad, but it screams 80s/early 90s. I kept expecting to hear Poison singing when I'd start a level.

Though it's hard to find now, Metal Slug X is a great addition to any gamer's library. It's not exactly rare, but it's unlikely you're going to see it in any main stores out there. Be sure to pick it up if you were introduced to the series with 3 or the GBA version. This is old school shooting at its finest.

Metal Slug is one of the most popular Arcade Games made by Snk (formerly for the now deceased Neo Geo home console).

The games were ridiculously priced at $300 but now with the power of the internet and emulation, you can play these games for free.

Metal Slug X is an enhanced version of Metal Slug 2. In Metal Slug, you play as war hero fighing nazi soldier's and freeing pows, and blowing up tanks with machine guns and high bazookas!!

In this version, the game has been enhanced to include deadly Aliens from outer space!!! (Obviously borrowed from Aliens and Duke Nukem).

Tthere are 5 different sequels to Metal Slug and this a great one to that collection

Awesome stuff but too short.

The game is great. Very fast and furious, non-stop action with great animation and humor. But what bugs me is that it's just too short. Altough you get bonus missions when you finish the game... it's not enough. I finished the game plenty of times BUT I WANT MORE !!! But for a normal player it will probably enough. Awesome game, buy it.

Metal Slug X-Super Vehicle 001 is Nazca's third run-n'-gun platformer game in the Metal Slug Series. It was first released for arcades and the Neo-Geo in 1999, and was later put on Playstation.

In Metal Slug X, you play as soldier Marco, Tarma, Eri, or Fio fighting against Saddam lookalike Morden's army. You have a variety of power-up weapons, from the homing Enemy Chaser to the crawling Iron Lizard to the powerful Laser Rifle. When you have no weapon, you have a pea-shooter pistol, and if you shoot while close to an enemy, you use a knife or a hatchet to save ammo and for extra points. Levels have nice variety, are well drawn, and have funny little things going on in the background. Graphics are very cartoony, with unbelieveable animation. Enemies don't just robotically attack you, they run away in fear, they cook dinner, they talk with eachother, they even go to the bathroom. Bosses are huge, powerful, and exciting, not even causing any slowdown. Yes, you have infinite continues, but if you want to really beat the game and get true satisfaction, you'll have to do it on one credit.

But the highlight of the game, is the slugs. No, not garden pests, but huge war machines. There are a huge variety for you to drive, or even fly, such as the Plane Slug, the downward-firing Slugnoid, the standard tank Metal Slug, and even the Camel Slug. They each seem to have their own personality-the Metal Slug even flinches when hit!

The game itself is extremely fun and playable, and the multiplayer mode can get quite hectic. If you see it, buy it, but the Neo-Geo version is much better, as expensive as it is.

Metal Slug X: SNK's answer to the Contra series

Metal Slug X is basically a re-release of Metal Slug 2 that originally appeared on the Neo Geo console system. The Metal Slug games play very similar to Konami's classic Contra series. The gameplay is somewhat linear, but undeniably fun. You run around gunning down lots of enemies on a 2D, multi-platform playing field while picking up power ups and saving captured soldiers, ect. The graphics are all hand-drawn and are skillfully animated (each enemy has it's own humorous death sequence)with plenty of color and minimal slow-down during loads of on-screen activity. The music and sound effects are a bit muffled though, but one can't expect stellar sound quality from a port of an old cartridge game anyway. Replay-wise, Metal Slug X provides a few interesting mini-games after you've beaten it, but as with all games of this type, playing the 2-player arcade mode with a friend is the only reason you will want to beat it over and over. If you are a fan of the old classics like Contra and Guerrilla War (for the original NES), you will love Metal Slug X. I would advise those who are less acquainted with the earlier days of gaming to rent it first.

Best 2-D shooter platform! Better than Contra SS

This game is amazing! The first time I played this game was at a friend's house on Sega Saturn. I remember this game from the neo geo arcade machines too. At any rate I was looking for some old school 2-D shooter platform games and picked up Contra: Shattered Soldier. Contra SS is a horrible game and I was not happy. Then I remember Metal Slug and after some online research I wanted it. I had to call 8+ gamestop till I FOUND ONE! This game is based on Metal Slug 2 with few extra twists.

The graphic is totally awesome, just like the arcade! Even for today's standard, the graphic is still very good! The hand drawn cartoon animation is unique and beautiful. This game has better graphics than Contra SS, seriously. Due to the limited memory of PS ONE, the explosions were degraded to "big pixels". This does not ruin the game in any way, the big pixel explosion blends well with the cartoon graphic.

The music is typical 16 bit, nothing impressive but still good. Each stage has its own music theme, pretty cool. The gameplay is totally awesome, non stop carnage and a feel of free style which contra SS totally lacks. The control is pretty solid but is a tiny bit floaty. The game is easy due to unlimited continues. This game is super fun, you will keep coming back for more! Multi player is even better. The gameplay never slows down, but I use a PS2.

Metal Slug 3 is coming to PS2! GBA will also get a Metal Slug but which one I don't know. Overall this treasure is a MUST BUY for old school gamers or gamers who appreciate solid FUN 2-D action. I LOVE THIS GAME!
