Sega Was The Only One Who Did It!

This is probably the only X-men Game that captured the feeling of Marvel's greatest heroes, THE X-MEN! This game is great, but then again it is a 16-Bt side-scrolling game but hey, it is an old game. You can choose from Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Cyclops! You also have 4 other X-men to help you throughout the game: Iceman, Storm, Archangel, Rogue and Jean. If you're an X-men fan and aren't consumed with Playstation and all those other new systems, get this game! 10 out of 5 stars!

Sega was the only company to make a great X-Men platformer

Acclaim managed to make plenty of lackluster video games using popular Marvel licenses (X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and let's not forget that Fantastic Four game for the PS1), but to this day Sega is the only company to make a great X-Men game (in fact they made two; this game and it's sequel X-Men 2: The Clone Wars). X-Men manages to catch the spirit of the comic allowing you play as Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Gambit while getting assistance from Iceman, Storm, Rogue, Archangel, and Jean Grey. You go through a number of huge levels, ranging from the Savage Land to a Shi'ar ship to Excalibur's castle to a ravaged Sentinel filled future to Asteroid M where you confront Magneto. You are thrown against hordes of generic looking enemies, but X-Men is surprisingly difficult and features some great boss battles (including Juggernaut, Deathbird, Sabretooth, Ahab, and finally Magneto among others) and the game effectively uses each character's different mutant powers such as Wolvie's berserker attack and Gambit's kinetic laced cards. The graphics are sharp, colorful, and surprisingly full of detail, while the controls are easy enough to pick up. All in all, this is one of the best Marvel licensed 16-bit games ever, but it would only be topped by it's sequel X-Men 2: The Clone Wars.

Great Game

I got X-Men eleven or twelve years ago when my parents got me a Sega Genesis. It was my first video game and to this day it is still one of my favorite games. And even now in the days of the PS2 and Xbox, I'll still frequently pop this game into my Genesis and play. It's simple, fun and familiar.

The game lets you play as four X-Men (Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Cyclops) and has five backup characters (Archangel, Storm, Rouge, Iceman and Jean Grey) that you can't play as, but you can call upon if you need help. The game brilliantly features the X-Men's different powers.

Each of the six levels are recognizable to people who are into X-Men...the Savage Land, the Shi'ar Empire, Excalibur's Lighthouse and Asteroid M to name most of them. The levels are interesting and well-detailed for a 16-bit game. They're also relatively big.

The boss fights are really great, too. Characters like Juggernaut, Sabertooth, Apocalypse, Mojo and obvously Magneto show up. Unfourtunately, a lot of them are really difficult to beat (not impossible) without backup characters, which is the only real problem with this game.

If you still own a working Genesis and don't have this game or haven't played this game before, I recommend looking for it.

Just to balance the other reviews...

X-Men is a fun game... on ameatur difficulty level. When I cranked it up to Hero (since you can't get any farther than the third level on ameatur), I found it almost impossible to do anything. I got tired of playing the levels all over again, fighting the same, almost randomly apearing enemies coming from doors at any moment and surrounding me. Although the game may have captured the feel of the X-Men, I didn't think they did a good job with the actual game aspect, which is probably the most important thing. If you want to play a good Marvel game, try Marvel Super-heroes: war of the Gems. It is much more balanced and fun than Sega's attempt at making an X-men game.

An excellent video game classic!

This video game is an absolutely amazing video game that still is a great memory on my part.

The graphics on this game were absolutely amazing for their time when this game came out somewhere around in 1994-ish. While it's definately a bit dated by today's standards the first X-Men game was the best Marvel COmic video game that I ever got to play.

I loved the sound the game would make then an X-Men character would lose a life and some of the sound effects were just so cool especially the air bomb sound effects when Storm would come down and wipe out the bad guys in the picture. So funny.

This game holds a special place in my memories and when I move on to heaven, I hope Jesus has my old Sega Genesis up there for me to play for a while before I take up form again in my next incarnation.

If you can find it, buy it! It's worth the price. They should re-release this on computer or the next video game system.

Sega finally makes a good Marvel Comics game, but watch out for the reset button near the end!!

After years of Nintendo making very crappy Marvel comic licensed titles, "Sega Genesis does NOT!!" It finally makes a good Marvel Comics game (Spider Man for Sega Genesis which I find ok) and its X-Men. Although it was'nt the best, Sega tried its best to fit the best graphics and gameplay possible for a 16-bit system (it was a good game for its time). In this game, there are only four characters to choose from which are Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Gambit and you fight your way through six intense levels of which strategy is required. Nightcrawler simply is the best (and sometimes the only useful character) to choose because of his extensive, yet deadly teleportation and superior speed. The scene where you fight Apocalypse is where Nightcrawler is mandatory so save his strength for that level. Its a great game to add to your collection, but allow me to highlight the hits and misses this game has to offer. Don't let a few misses prevent you from getting the game, because a difficult game does'nt always make it less fun.

GAME HITS:
Graphics were impressive for its time, using the same (almost life like) animation as the Spider Man game for Sega plus the same sound effects. The controls were reponsive and attack/jump buttons were at the right place. Like the first ninja turtles game for NES, you get to switch characters during the game. You also get to choose several X-Men for assistance such as Archangel, Storm, and Rouge (offense helpers when things get really rough) plus Iceman and Jean Grey (when you need to get to "out of reach" areas). Enemy selection from the comics were decent (Sabretooth, Death Bird, Juggernaut, Zaladane, Sentinals, Apocalypse, Ahab, Mojo, and Magneto) and there were a variety of weaker enemies.

GAME MISSES
It's bad enough that your mutant powers are limited to a mutant powerbar, but I find it ridiculous that releasing Wolverine's deadly claws are part of his powers (and depletes much of his energy bar even when he is standing still). When the power bar goes down he'll either retract his claws or he'll start uncontrollably slash allover the place while your life bar depletes. After fighting Mojo, you have to press the reset button right to stop the speading computer virus and move on to Astroid M. If you press it wrong, you start all over (now thats retarted). Its a very big deal because you work hard to pass through these first 5 intense levels. For that reason alone, do not get the game for the Wii console because I hear that the reset button on that console makes it impossible to get it right. The characters you control move much too slow (except for Nightcrawler) and their regular attacks are a bit delayed. At least most of the enemies attack at the same speed so thats a little fair, but for a side-scrolling game, thats a disappointment.
